In a real life demonstration of scholar John Lott's maxim "more guns, less crime," violent crime has dropped in Virginia as gun ownership has increased. According to a Fox News report, firearms sales in Virginia were 16 percent higher in 2012 over 2011 and violent crime went down by 5 percent. Perhaps the significance of this is best seen in the raw numbers: In 2012 licensed gun dealers sold 490,119 guns in their state, while the number of violent crimes for the same time period was 4,378. |

Right now the terrorist can cause us to spend millions, trample the civil rights of our citizens and lock our doors in fear, just by talking about it. We truly are becoming a nation ripe for conquest by those who do not value the life of a few people over all else. Sometimes you got to spill blood to live free but the liberals do not see it that way. History shows that great nations are always defeated by those who do not value life as much and are willing to fight and die for what they believe in. We are becoming another Rome living behind walls and hiring others to protect us from the barbarians because we are not willing to risk our lives or those of our children to preserve our nation. |

Recently a Washington man used Vice President Joe Biden’s advice of, “If you want to protect yourself, get a double-barreled shotgun … and fire two blasts outside the house”—as his basis of defense when he was arrested for illegal discharging of a firearm. The local police department isn’t buying the man’s excuse, and the Veep did not rush to his aid. |

Unlike law-abiding gun owners, gun-control desperadoes seem to have more ammo than they know what to do with these days. Case in point, gun-control rustlers loaded up quickly on the average citizen’s lack of knowledge of self defense law and “the justifiable taking of a life” and have been quite successful at exploiting the emotionally misleading narrative of the George Zimmerman case. The thing is, the trial is over and this nonsense is still going on. |

“Our evaluation of its effectiveness should be guided by objective information, not by political expediency. Does the law keep the innocent safer? Is it being applied fairly? Are there ways we can make this law clearer and more understandable?” he wrote. “These are appropriate questions that should be asked and answered.”
“Although it is appropriate to review our laws, we will not back down a single inch from our citizens’ ability to protect themselves,” he added.
Matt Gaetz, the Republican state representative tasked with running that hearing as chair of the Criminal Justice Subcommittee, doesn’t believe the hearing–set for the autumn–will lead to any changes either. |

Gun violence is the leading cause of death among Black children and teens, according to a new report by the Children’s Defense Fund, a nonprofit, child advocacy group.
The report titled, “Protect Children, Not Guns 2013,” painted grim picture of the national gun violence epidemic that is the second-leading cause of death among all children ages 1-19. Only car accidents claim the lives of more children and teenagers than guns. |

Many readers find in the Second Amendment a larger unstated vision of America as a polity in which an armed people “regulate” the state rather than the reverse, in which the individual is empowered to resist with deadly force unwelcome interference by either the government or the neighbors. (Just to make matters more confusing, a common usage in eighteenth-century America defined a “regulator” as a member of an extra-legal band of violent vigilantes.) |

Utah does not allow for the use of medical marijuana, but eight of the 31 states that recognize its concealed firearms permit do. Utah’s permits are extremely popular outside of the state.
The federal law does not deny conceal permits to those taking prescription opiates or other drugs.
This situation perfectly illustrates the callousness and idiocy of federal law. Because a seriously ill patient’s doctor chooses to treat her with cannabis (tremendously beneficial for a whole host of ailments, despite what the DEA says), the feds deny a constitutionally protected right. |

Philip Rucker leads the Post today with a story about a study that claims there is a “vast” gun market thriving online that allows gun buyers to evade the background check system. Rucker’s story is full of misleading statements.
The marketplace for firearms on the Internet, where buyers are not required to undergo background checks, is so vast that advocates for stricter regulations now consider online sales a greater threat than the gun show loophole.
Misleading statement #1: Buyers are only not required to undergo background checks if they’re not buying from a licensed firearms dealer. If you buy online from a licensed dealer, you still have to undergo a background check. |

Even gun makers want to be liked. So governors and other politicians from states eager to embrace the industry have descended on places where they are not so popular — like Connecticut, Maryland, New York and Colorado — offering tax breaks and outright cash grants to persuade them to relocate. |

There is nothing surprising about the stark divisions revealed in the new Quinnipiac University poll showing 53 percent support for “Stand your ground” (SYG) laws. White voters support them (57 percent). Republican and independent voters support them (75 percent and 57 percent, respectively). Democrats don’t (62 percent). Women don’t (47 percent). African Americans most certainly do not (57 percent). And these divisions will likely keep these insane laws in place. |

In a recent interview while promoting her motion picture, “The Butler,” Oprah Winfrey found a distinct parallel between the Trayvon Martin shooting and the 1955 Emmett Till lynching. They were “the same thing” in her mind.
Till was an innocent 14-year-old African American boy who was lynched for allegedly flirting with a 21-year-old white woman.
Martin was shot in self-defense while bashing the head of George Zimmerman into the pavement. |

The notion of tactical soundness is one permeating the discipline of defensive handgunning. You’ll hear the soundness of this or that technique or tactic derided all the time with 5-cent words like “that sucks” or “that doesn’t work,” and sometimes with 50-cent words like “that’s tactically unsound.” Everyone has an opinion on the subject, and most aren’t shy about sharing it with you. Yet many of these opinions are themselves unsound — they lack appropriate context and information. I’ll talk about holsters here initially, but they are only as an example of the principle we’re talking about. The principle applies to almost every choice of tactic or technique we have to choose from. |

On his Facebook page, Newell said he voted for President Barack Obama but was upset with his administration, citing the President’s failure to close down Guantanamo Bay and the continuing federal crack down on medical marijuana. He also posted an image on his page in support of the Second Amendment, along with a lengthy note opposing gun control. She is also holds traditional conservative views on a number of issues, casting herself as a pro-Second Amendment and pro-life. And while she supports the concept of immigration reform, Mace opposes the current proposal in Congress.
...
Graham has done much to alienate conservatives in the Palmetto State. He came out strongly against Paul’s filibuster of CIA nominee John Brennan and refused to join a filibuster of new gun control measures in the Senate. He also support immigration reform in the Senate, which may not settle well among conservative in South Carolina. |

A federal appeals court has refused an urgent request by gun rights advocates to let Illinois residents immediately tote firearms in public under the state's fledgling concealed-carry law, although the panel has decided to give the matter a speedy review.
The Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied the request last Thursday and said it expects both sides to submit written briefs by Aug. 14 regarding whether the monthslong wait to implementing the law is unreasonable and illegal, as critics insist. No oral arguments on the matter had been scheduled as of Monday. |

A robbery victim in Houston fought back Thursday morning when he was the target of yet another armed robbery for the second time in less than two months. After the first incident he bought a gun, and when a trio of would-be robbers approached him he shot two of them, one critically.
According to a local news report, the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was standing outside of his office building near his SUV about 7 a.m. when he was approached by three armed men attempting to rob him. But the man had been robbed just six weeks prior and had a newly purchased large-caliber handgun sitting in his vehicle. |

Immigration reform being debated in Congress will have a major unintended consequence on gun rights in America.
Neither political party has anticipated the effect. With the stroke of a pen, millions of people will suddenly find themselves eligible to buy guns.
The law that currently bans them from gun ownership or possession only affects them as illegal aliens. With citizenship that disability evaporates. The freedom to keep and bear arms, which the Bill of Rights guarantees the rest of us, will instantly be theirs. This will cause a reordering of the political landscape beyond anything Congress has imagined. |
