Research indicates that fewer than one out of 1,000 defensive uses of a gun results in the attacker's death. In up to 98% of the cases, simply brandishing a gun is sufficient to stop a crime. And that provides no emotionally gripping picture to make the story "newsworthy."
Sampled [in the article] are some of the 20 defensive-gun-use stories that my colleague Robert Waters and I found reported in local media around the country during the same week as the Post story (July 22-28). |

"I just finished watching the video Waco: The Rules of Engagement, and found it extremely disturbing. Here are the things that struck me about it:" ... "What happened at Waco was simply disgraceful. It is an example of how the State will use its primary tools of lies and brute force to accomplish its goals as long as it thinks it can get away with it." -by Rob Moody |

"The NRA should come around on this common-sense initiative and help the GOP to remove its head from the sand [...] Closing the gun-show loophole would be a declaration of independence from the NRA by the GOP. Doing so would also give Republican members of Congress an issue to campaign for, and in politics, offense is always better than defense." -by Scott Reed, campaign manager for Bob Dole's presidential campaign in 1996 |

"During the 2000 presidential campaign, an official from the National Rifle Association famously boasted that, were George W. Bush to win, the NRA would be working out of the Oval Office. So far, that hasn't happened. But the group could hardly have hoped for a more sympathetic administration. Over the past two months, the administration has taken several steps to halt or amend gun control measures it regards as too restrictive, ineffective, or both:"... -by Liz Marlantes |

"Victims cannot sue gunmakers when criminals use their products illegally, California's top court ruled, rejecting a suit stemming from the 1993 massacre of eight people in a skyscraper."
~ While a good victory, not as good as it appears, since the Supremes (CA) say the basic reason for the finding is that the state legislature has said that gun manufactureres can't be found liable, it's not like they thought that manufacturers are not liable for the criminal misuse of the product... |

"We hope the Court will uphold the Constitution. But it will be too late for the Klamath Falls farmers unless the Bush Administration moves immediately to stop the costly EPA arrogance." --Phyllis Schlafly
KABA NOTE: Plenty of gun owners and a number of KABA members showed up in protest of this gross abuse of power by the federal government. Let's be glad cooler heads have prevailed so far, and let's hope the feds pull their heads out and do the right thing. |

In case this was missed...
"POLICE forces reported more than 500 gun alerts in the seven days before the shooting dead of Derek Bennett by police in Brixton, a Times survey has found. Four years after the post-Dunblane gun law reforms were launched, 30 of the 43 forces in England and Wales dealt with 571 incidents in which guns were reportedly seen or heard over a seven-day period. Real or imitation weapons were involved in 166 of the incidents, most in London and other big cities." |

Stewardess Anne Marie Smith, in an August 2nd appearance on CNN's Larry King Live and elsewhere, clarifies earlier confusion, when she states that a review of her records shows that the phone call wherein Condit stated that he "might be in some trouble" and "might have to disappear for awhile" came on May 10 or 11. The specific nature of that trouble seems not to concern the Establishment media or law enforcement investigators. |

"...Lubbock’s police have been converted from protectors of the peace to a veritable standing army. Instead of guarding their flock from the wolves, the common constables are now warriors for the state, ready to murder those they swore to protect... In a free republic any insurrection requiring massive military firepower should be the business of the Governor of Texas and properly regulated citizen militia, not ill-trained and aggressive local police." - Jeff Elkins |

Tape Recordings Document SWAT Carnage -- "The deadly SWAT attack against a Lubbock man in July unleashed an astounding 369 rounds, one of which killed an officer; and the man under siege never fired a shot, an FBI ballistics investigation has confirmed."
~Three-Hundred-And-Sixty-Nine rounds fired!?!?! If that's not a sign of panic and incompetence, I don't know what is. |

"Gun-toting cab driver fighting law" -- Clyde Riley is fighting the city of Cincinnati to get a law changed to allow cab drivers to carry guns. Meanwhile, he faces a charge of breaking the current law.
“We are just ordinary guys trying to earn a living. The law says we have to pick up a person if they ask us. Some of those thugs out there don't care whether we have $5 or $500. They will try to take it.” Mr. Riley's protest has received some sympathy from City Hall, but no interest so far in changing the law.

"Maybe they reflect greater inner conflict (in conservatives). They're more anxious or insecure, and people on the left are more secure, less anxious and more imaginative or creative," he says. "As my conservative friends like to point out, it may be that people on the right have a greater realism, a sensitivity to the threats and dangers out there in the world, while people on the left are irrational and caught up in their own fantasies. Their heads are off in the clouds," he says. |
