"House Speaker Dennis Hastert has erroneously stated that the Senate voted to defeat the federal assault-weapons ban, according to advocates who are working to get Congress to act to save the ban from extinction."

"The San Jose Mercury News reported Aug. 5 that despite the fact that the Senate voted 52-47 to extend the ban back in March, Hastert said in a National Public Radio interview this week that passage was unlikely because 'the Senate has defeated it already.' "

"The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence called Hastert's statement 'highly misleading.' "

"At the same time, however, Hastert said a bill to extend the ban 'might have a chance' in the House if brought to a vote..."

Guns and deep remorse in the land Down Under

"In reality, Australia does have a 'statistical problem' with rising violent crime rates. So does Britain -- and both countries took unprecedented steps a few years back to not only regulate firearms, but to confiscate them. Australians spent at least half a billion dollars to collect and destroy hundreds of thousands of legally owned guns, and the result? No decrease in violent crime, armed robberies up by 166%."

"These disturbing trends have given a new weapon to the North American gun lobby, which also points to a dramatic drop in violent crime in the U.S. during the same period, as state after state -- 20 in the past two decades -- relaxed the rules for carrying concealed handguns for personal protection."

"In Britain, for example, the right to defend yourself is being taken away in many ways. Gun control laws there have not only tightened restrictions on gun ownership -- with the murder rate rising as they do -- these laws ban anything that looks like a gun, especially if it is used in self-defense."

"Britons who have held burglars in their homes until the police arrived, by using toy pistols, have been arrested along with the burglars. To the collectivist mindset, independent self-help of any sort is a threat to their vision of the government as the sole source of protection and direction." ...

"The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has even advised that you are not to yell 'help' when you are attacked in a public place. You are to yell 'Call the police.' "

"Both self-defense and coming to the aid of others are lumped together as 'vigilante' actions. That mindset has made inroads into the American media as well."

"...Liberals frequently call John Ashcroft a 'fascist' -- Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, the Patriot Act, etc. Yet the very same people want gun control. Why is this inconsistent?"

"The Second Amendment recognizes a right to 'keep and bear arms,' designed by the Founding Fathers to help prevent tyranny by government. If 'fascist' Ashcroft wishes to trample on the Constitution, does this not represent the very tyranny by government that so deeply concerned the Founding Fathers? Some leftists see a movement toward a police state -- the very thing the Founding Fathers wanted the Second Amendment and the armed citizenry to prevent -- yet the very leftists also want further gun control. Some leftists distrust the government as to the First Amendment and the Fourth Amendment, yet apparently feel sufficiently secure that we need not fear tyranny from this 'fascist' government."

"The trend should be toward fewer laws, not more; toward greater freedom, not less. It’s quite clear that the gun laws in this country are excessive, confusing, contradictory and frequently ineffective. ..."

"Four: Those who disagree with us can’t be trusted. This belief is summed up by those who wrote that a federal licensing program would lead to 'legal bans and confiscations.' The underlying concern seems to be that 'honest debate' is futile, that behind any seemingly well-intentioned effort to define rights lurks the express desire to deny them. This is not to say that, in many instances, such suspicions are invalid; it is, however, to warn this is a dangerously divisive path for any nation to follow."

"I am an independent journalist in Pennsylvania and have written quite a few articles pertaining to the U.S. Constitution - and Mr. Stanley - over the last few years. It is my understanding that the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution applies to ALL citizens in America as our founding fathers intended. This has been validated by John Ashcroft, so I see no need to debate this point with anyone, including yourself. I find it incredible that not one member of the Colorado legislature has taken issue with the crimes being committed against Mr. Stanley, an upstanding citizen of your fine state and a solid, respectable, law-abiding individual who dared to commit the unconscionable crime of defending the Supreme Law of the Land, which we all know supersedes the Constitution of the State of Colorado or any local ordinances that come into conflict with it."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
As nightfall does not come all at once, neither does oppression. In both instances, there is a twilight. And it is in such twilight that we all must be aware of change in the air, however slight, lest we become unwitting victims of the darkness. — Justice William O. Douglas, US Supreme Court (1939-75)
