... "But one can almost bet the farm, or Bloomberg’s billions, that the gun prohibition lobby will find some way to blame gun rights, or at least gun ownership, for such an attack ... Perhaps we could institute a universal background check on the sale or transfer of an IED. One can imagine Bill Gates dumping a million bucks into an initiative campaign."
"There will be attempts to exploit such an attack as a reason to criminalize gun shows and people loaning shotguns to their neighbors for a weekend. It’s astonishing that anyone could honestly believe terrorists, much less domestic criminals, are going to bother with, or be deterred by, such things as background checks, waiting periods, magazine capacity limits or human decency." ... |

"The sturm und drang has been flowing freely since Charles Vacca met an untimely end earlier this week after allowing a 9-year-old girl to fire an Uzi with the giggle switch engaged. Reactions have fallen somewhere on the spectrum between ‘you deserve to be dead, you moron‘ to ‘all gun owners should be imprisoned and their children taken away.’ But taking a more measured view of the value of teaching children to shoot is Dan Baum, author of Gun Guys: A Road Trip. He’s out with a piece at time.com today, ‘Letting Kids Shoot Guns is Good for Them,' in which he extolls the virtues and benefits of teaching kids to shoot . . ." ... |

"Reader Steve Sacco has had some extra time on his hands lately:"
"While my real work is running in the background and I’m waiting for it to complete, I thought I’d play with Google Trends. Google Trends is a tool which allows you to see search activity over time for certain words and/or phrases. This is the first time I’ve used it. So, let’s ask The Google how much interest there is in “gun control.” According to the antis, this is a burning question being asked by everyone. According to Google, with the exception of a couple of spikes in 2013, I see a distinct downward trend in interest . . ." ... |

"Saturday night’s fatal shooting of a man in the Queen Anne neighborhood brought out the anti-gun bigotry of some people, and quick reactions from others, while investigators were still trying to piece together why the man was firing a gun on his property, which the Seattle Times reported had sold for $2.2 million in June 2013."
"The Seattle Police Blotter reported that the man was outside brandishing a firearm when police arrived. The man went inside the house as officers arrived. At least two responding officers were armed with patrol rifles, and when the man came out of the house and opened fire, they fired back. After the officers shot him, he crawled back inside, where he was later found dead." ... |

"Some people die in freak accidents that are impossible to predict. Charles Vacca isn’t necessarily one of them. Vacca was the Arizona shooting-range instructor killed last week by a 9-year-old girl playing with an Uzi. (Of course, playing. She wasn’t there to fight Hamas.)"
"Vacca was experienced with guns and, judging from his Facebook page, enamored of them. One of his postings was a paean to the Second Amendment accompanied by the gun-movement slogan: 'Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.'"
"Vacca’s death proved the validity of his point: He was indeed a person killed by a person — in his case, a 9-year-old female person. That, of course, isn’t the scenario the sloganeers at the [NRA] ... promote. ..." ... |

"On August 28, Geraldo Rivera responded to the accidental death of firearms instructor Charles Vacca by calling the Second Amendment 'blind and stupid.'"
"Vacca worked at Bullets and Burgers, a popular stop outside Las Vegas for tourists who want to legally shoot a machine gun. He was shot and killed when a nine-year-old allowed the gun she was shooting to jump back during recoil."

"In the June 21 edition, the Free Press devoted an entire page to the 'pro gun' opinions of Mr. William Sprano, in which he argued that his constitutional right to own firearms was being unfairly attacked, at least in comparison to our other rights as citizens. For added emphasis, we were shown a large, full-color picture of a local gun shop owner proudly displaying a 'high-end rifle,' and a smaller picture showing two small children at a gun rally waving banners in support of the Second Amendment. How patriotic!"
"As one who feels we have suffered enough senseless tragedy from gun violence in our country, I am offended by the implication that putting sensible limitations on gun ownership is somehow unpatriotic, and even illegal. ..." ... |

"I am absolutely fascinated by Americans and their obsession with guns. Every now and again, there is some widely publicised horrific fatal shooting incident, followed by calls for gun control, which are in turn followed by the proverbial middle finger from the NRA ..."
"But last week, I came across one of the most bizarre stories of all. A nine-year-old girl, a fourth-grader, on vacation with her family in Arizona, accidentally killed a shooting instructor with an Uzi on a shooting range. As a parent, this totally weirded me out, because when my family goes on vacation, the only things that my kids shoot are pictures, and even that is dangerous, as my two-year-old son loves to throw stuff, including the camera itself." ... |

"The gun control debate has a new dimension: gun control for children."
"On Monday in White Hills, Arizona, a 9-year-old girl lost control of an Uzi submachine gun, shooting and killing Charles Vacca, her 39-year-old instructor. Not only did the girl have her parents’ permission to try the weapon, but they also videotaped her using it." ... -------
Submitter's Note: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (newspaper) accuses the 9 year old girl, involved in the tragic firearms accident in Arizona, of being a 'killer'. While this newspaper has a long history of evangelizing against gun ownership, these blatantly unprofessional and defamatory remarks are over the top for even them. All criticism of the editorial staff at this newspaper is deserved and the parents of this young girl should be made aware of these comments. It is clear that any semblance of journalistic integrity that this newspaper would lay claim to have forever been shredded! |

"Washington State is ground zero in gun control advocates’ campaign to “expand” mandatory government background checks to all firearms purchases and transfers (including gun shows and family gifts). Come November, Evergreen State voters will either OK or torpedo Initiative 594. Quite how this increased government surveillance would reduce firearms-related crime is anybody’s guess. It certainly hasn’t had any measurable impact in Massachusetts or California. Regardless, billionaire Steve Ballmer’s donated $600,000. Bill Gates has chipped in $1m to the pro-Initiative 594 campaign. Not be outdone, billionaire ballistic bully boy Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety has also ante’d up a cool mil. ..." ... |

"Castle Rock, Colorado sits on the urban corridor that stretches south between Denver to Colorado Springs. It’s primarily a bedroom community that has had explosive growth in the last 30 years, increasing in population form 3,921 in 1980 to 51,348 in 2012. In 2003 the home rule city’s town council gave the town manager, who is appointed by the council, the authority to ban the open carry of firearms on town property. In 2014, the council voted to remove that authority. The current Town Manager, Mark Stevens, had prohibited open carry on city property, resulting in a stand-off . . ." ... |
