"Though Congress approved the firearms program for pilots, it left its implementation to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Critics say the TSA is not administering the program but rather is actively opposing its implementation."

"About 10,000 pilots should be carrying firearms in the cockpit by now, the APSA said during a recent press conference at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport."

" 'It almost seems like the bureaucrats in Washington want another hijacking,' an American Airlines pilot told NewsMax."

"Pilot groups are urging President Bush to order the TSA to move more expediently in arming airline pilots as a last line of defense against terrorists."

"In the two years since the nation began giving law enforcement agencies fresh powers to help them track down and punish terrorists, police and prosecutors have increasingly turned the force of the new laws not on al-Qaida cells, but on people charged with common crimes."

"The Justice Department said it has used authority given to it by the USA Patriot Act to crack down on currency smugglers and seize money hidden overseas by alleged bookies, con artists and drug dealers."

-------
What this legislation does is simply give the federal government more power to infringe on our rights under the guise of protecting national security.

"The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence today (September 4th) commended Senator John Kerry (D-MA) for recognizing the need for strong gun laws to reduce gun violence in America. During his September 2 speech in which he formally announced his campaign, Senator Kerry said '[c]ourage means standing up for gun safety, not retreating from the issue out of political fear or trying to have it both ways.' " ...

"More than 26,000 Americans die each year at the barrel of a gun; eight young people each day --far more than any other industrialized nation in the world. Gun violence costs the American economy approximately $100 billion annually."

Who's surprised at yet more vacuous, manipulated emotionalism from the enemies of freedom?

"Our glorious, dead-letter Constitution states that the 'right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.' Is the definition of 'uninfringed' equal to 'up to 20,000 laws, but no more than?' I know this will infuriate the nanny-statist heathens in Washington, DC, but 'not infringed' means if you're tall enough to put your money on the counter, you can have a gun. That also means convicted felons can and should be able to own firearms." ...

"Our nation was built on private ownership of firearms. You may hate guns, but were it not for them, you would not be here today to whine about them." ...

"FEAR of the armed citizen and the threat of tough punishment for using a gun (or other weapons) in committing a violent crime are significant factors in both reducing and deterring crime, according to the results of a survey of imprisoned felons conducted by Professors James D. Wright and Peter H. Rossi."

"Through in-depth interviews with 1,874 imprisoned felons conducted between August, 1982, and January, 1983, the government-funded researchers delved into the deep-seated attitudes of criminals on the questions of weapons choice, deterrence, attitudes toward 'gun control,' criminal history, and firearms acquisition." ...

"Don’t you just love it when the enemies of freedom begin whining about gun violence being an epidemic, as if it were garden variety disease, instead of a willful, criminal or irresponsible act of a human being pulling the trigger?"

"The absurdity of this transparent scare tactic struck me as I was once again treated to a petulant bit of bellyaching by the President of the stridently anti-freedom Joyce Foundation Ellen Alberding, who had the temerity to refer to 'gun violence' as a public health epidemic, as if the irresponsible or criminal actions of those few, who choose – either by intent or ignorance – to inflict harm on others can be compared to the horrors of cancer or other lethal diseases."

"It has become the ultimate defining moment for Americans."

"And now, two years after the unthinkable, horrific, terrorist assaults of Sept. 11, 2001, they're still bracing for what comes next. Officials are not reassuring. "The University of Minnesota Parliamentary Debate Society invites you to a participatory public debate on this highly contested issue. In favor of the law will be State Senator David Hann, one of the first signatories of the bill, and U of M debater Zach Coelius. Arguing against the law will be U of M debater Leila Babaeva and State Senator Ellen Anderson, a legislator who is leading a campaign against the legislation. For everyone believes permission to be the heart and soul of freedom and safety its essence! And it is then that my heart aches, because permission is not freedom! "The new law seems to cover just about everything. It restricts how much parties can give to candidates and what can be given to political parties. Contributions by minors are banned. Limits on individual contributions are being raised, but they are now adjusted by a formula that penalizes wealthy candidates from spending their own money." ...

The list of limitations goes on ad nauseam.

"Supporters predict that all these rules will reduce money’s role in politics and make elections more competitive, reduce corruption, and encourage more people to vote. Of course, this is what was predicted for past campaign finance regulations. But instead of getting better, things have gotten worse."

"...Some proponents argue that Missouri residents have the right to protect themselves on the street as they go about their daily lives. That seems to suggest that armed criminals lie in wait at every turn to take advantage of defenseless citizens."

"More than 15,000 registered firearms have been verified over the telephone rather than in person, according to new information that Canadian Alliance MP Garry Breitkreuz says throws the integrity of the federal gun program into question."

"Mr. Breitkreuz obtained up-to-date data from the RCMP over the summer that revealed that identifying information about 15,068 rifles and shotguns had been verified by phone."

This will be for the protection of your family and the possible use of these weapons in, what I regard as, the inevitable violence which will occur."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

Cedar Rapids Police are trading in their old guns for some new ones but the gun swap shouldn't generate the controversy it did nine years ago.

In 1994, gun dealers offered the city new glock semi-automatic handguns in exchange for all of the department's older models.

A federal crime bill had outlawed new guns with 15-shot clips for civilians but dealers could legally sell the used police models for more than new ones.

This time, the city will pay 450 dollars for each new handgun and get 300 dollars in trade-in value for each old one and the used guns can only be resold to police.

The city is ordering 250 glocks to equip the police department.
