Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and 11 governors called on President Donald Trump and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to pass "common sense gun legislation."

The letter cites recent mass shootings in Gilroy, California; El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio and Philadelphia in addition to noting thousands of gun deaths this year.

"Thoughts and prayers won’t fix this disturbing trend. Enough is enough," the letter says. The group of 12 governors is being led by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

They say that a "patchwork" of state laws will not be sufficient for addressing gun violence.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The man who loaned the gun used to kill college athlete Lauren McCluskey looked downcast and said he "shakes" when he thinks about her death Wednesday as he was sentenced to three years of supervised release.

In June, Vogel pleaded guilty to lying in his purchase of the firearm used to kill McCluskey.

Her parents sued the institution in June, saying officials refused to take responsibility for missing chances to prevent her death despite multiple reports to police.

Dale Brophy, the university police chief, is retiring months after his department came under fierce criticism for its handling of the case.

PLCAA is a common-sense law. Product liability suits are usually focused on actual manufacturing defects. A good backyard grill effectively grills meat, but if it blows up due to a manufacturing defect, then a tort suit is warranted. A good gun shoots reliably and accurately and doesn't blow up in your hands.

Republican state Sen. David Simmons wants new restrictions on anyone under age 25 from buying or owning an assault weapon in Florida, a stance welcomed by Democrats but something the state GOP chair said had “zero chance” of passing.

Simmons, R-Sanford, who chairs the powerful Senate Judiciary Committee, announced his proposal Wednesday at an Orange County League of Women Voters event in Orlando.

He told the audience he would introduce the measure for the next legislative session that begins in January, which will be Simmons’ last as a term-limited senator.

Authorities say Marroquin killed Robert Leroy Mitchell Jr. when she shot him once in the chest June 6.

Do you support the Second Amendment? Well, left-wing San Francisco city officials think you’re a terrorist, apparently. If only you were just a felon, then they'd call you a "justice-involved individual."

Local leaders made headlines when they recently passed an official resolution branding the National Rifle Association, the country’s largest grassroots Second Amendment advocacy organization, a “terrorist organization.”

Lamar Wilson of Iowa City went to trial in 2018 for charges stemming from that shooting, citing the then-new "stand your ground" defense.

Wilson’s attorneys argue he shot in self-defense, but a jury found him guilty of voluntary manslaughter and other charges.

He was later sentenced to 24 years in prison.

Wilson appealed the ruling, which has since reached the Iowa Supreme Court, arguing he should have a pre-trial hearing.

Chief Justice Mark Cady says the court's decision is expected in the next few months.

As a result, all of the major Democratic presidential candidates have built gun control policies into their platforms or have staked out their positions on the stump.

Most of the Democratic contenders have a few gun-control positions in common: support for universal background checks, an assault weapons ban, and so-called "red flag" laws that would allow police to confiscate guns from persons deemed dangerous to themselves or others.

And in another preview of what could come, the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee rejected all Republican amendments and passed the three bills on straight party-line votes.

The bills – including a ban on high-capacity magazines and “red flag” warning measures – were either the solution to our nation’s “moral crisis” in the words of one Democrat, or law that would “turn the Constitution on its head,” according to Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Gilbert. That was echoed by Rep. Debbie Lesko, R-Peoria.

Two mass shootings in the last month have claimed 29 lives in Texas, drawing scrutiny and criticism of the state’s lax firearm regulations.

Among these policies: gun owners can knowingly sell or transfer weapons to felons, making it one of the easiest states in which to carry out straw purchases. Texans are also not required to report lost or missing firearms to law enforcement, nor are large-capacity magazines restricted.

Last year, the RAND Corporation’s Gun Policy in America research initiative issued a comprehensive assessment of the effects of 13 gun policies at the state level. Its overarching finding was that there simply isn’t enough scientific evidence to answer the most pressing questions on how to prevent gun violence deaths and injuries while preserving gun owners’ rights.

Sutherland Springs, Santa Fe and now El Paso and Midland-Odessa: Mass shootings keep happening in Texas and, it seems, with more frequency.

Elected officials, like Gov. Greg Abbott, have vowed to do something.

“The time for talking is over,” Abbott said after the El Paso attack on Aug. 3. “The time for action began today.”

Abbott convened a series of public safety meetings in August, and just last week he issued eight executive orders aimed at streamlining the reporting of suspicious activity to identify potential mass shooters.

A well-regulated militia being essential to the security of a free state. . . ." The next time someone tells you that the militia referred to in the Second Amendment has been "superceded" by the National Guard, ask them who it was that prevented United Airlines Flight 93 from reaching its target. The National Guard? The regular Army? The D.C. Police Department? None of these had a presence on Flight 93 because, in a free society, professional law-enforcement and military personnel cannot be everywhere.

Being a gun owner but skeptical about such explanations, I wanted to be more informed before responding. I found Thom Hartmann's book, "The Hidden History of Guns and the Second Amendment." It cites historical references, including records of the states’ conventions when they considered adopting the Constitution following the General Convention in 1787. It shows that the framers of the Constitution didn't consider defense of oneself or for "hearth and home," overthrowing a tyrannical government, or repelling invaders as reasons for the Second Amendment.

A grand jury last week declined to indict a man accused of murder in the fatal stabbing of a panhandler on North Main Street in June, ending the case against him.

Gary McConville, 42, was charged with murder in the death of Antonio Bryant, 51, on North Main Street by Cypress Street.

But a grand jury last week issued a no true bill, meaning it did not find probable cause that murder or any other crime had been committed, according to McConville’s lawyer, who had argued self-defense in earlier proceedings.

Every one of these people clamors for further gun background checks, enactment of “Red Flag laws,” and bans on so-called “assault weapons,” and so-called “gun buybacks. Not one of these people has the least interest in securing, preserving, and strengthening the Second Amendment.

On the contrary, they all wish to dispense with the Second Amendment altogether, and their gun control measures are clear evidence of that, and their recent pronouncements on the subject make that fact abundantly clear. A slippery slope to Armageddon is not fallacy here. Prima facie evidence exists for this conclusion. De facto repeal of the Second Amendment is the penultimate goal of the New Progressive Left.

The Illinois State Rifle Association (ISRA) is taking its fight for gun rights to the courts.

ISRA Executive Director Richard A. Pearson recently sent a bulletin to members reminding them that the organization is now involved in several gun rights cases, including the Matthew Wilson et al. v. Cook County case the organization plans to appeal all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Wilson case is over Cook County's ban on large capacity magazines and semi-automatic firearms.
