The Union Public Safety Department reports no charges will be filed after a deadly shooting in August was determined to have been in self-defense.

Police said they responded to South Pickney Street behind Buddy’s Corner Store around 7:45 p.m. on Aug. 18. They found a man lying in the grass.

Union County EMS transported the man to Union Medical Center, where he passed away. The Union County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Ieshaun Dunn, 28, of South Church Street, Union.

Officials said that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was contacted to assist with the investigation.

King County prosecutors will not criminally charge a man who fatally shot a woman in October outside her West Seattle home, saying he fired in self-defense at the former doctor who participated in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Seattle Police Department investigators asked the King County prosecuting attorney’s office for a second opinion after determining the 41-year-old Tacoma man acted lawfully in the Oct. 1 shooting, police records show.

In a letter to Seattle police written in June, Senior Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Thomas O’Ban agreed with detectives, saying the shooter had a right under state law to defend himself after Tamara Towers, 57, pointed a loaded shotgun at him and his co-worker.

Late last night, a jury found Heather Cushman not guilty of murder in the second degree.

In September of 2024, the Loveland Police Department received a call from Heather Cushman reporting that she had stabbed her father, John “Clint” Cushman, in his home.

...

The seven-day jury trial began on September 2nd and was led by Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Hardouin and Deputy District Attorney Leeah Lechuga. Throughout the trial, Ms. Cushman’s involvement in Clint Cushman’s death was not in question, but rather, as Ms. Cushman’s defense argued, whether the affirmative defense of self-defense applied.

State Rep. Dave Prestin this week announced his plan to allow Michigan bow hunters to carry a pistol with them for personal protection.

“Hunters can face many dangers in the woods, especially from close encounters with predator species like bears, wolves, and cougar,” said Prestin, R-Cedar River. “Bow hunters are very limited in their ability to respond if one of these animals becomes aggressive and decides to attack them.”

Just last year, a young bow hunter in the Northern Lower Peninsula was attacked by a black bear with three cubs. He was able to hold the bear off and was later rescued two hours later. He then required 40 stitches in his leg from an injury sustained during the attack.

On the heels of a ruling by an appellate court ending all restrictions on the open carry of firearms in Florida, several elected Democratic officials from Parkland — the site of the state’s deadliest school shooting — are bashing the decision as dangerous.

The 1st District Court of Appeal ruled Wednesday that Florida’s statutory limits on carrying guns for self-defense violate the Second Amendment.

A spokesperson for Attorney General James Uthmeier’s Office, the appellee in the case, said he will not seek a rehearing or Florida Supreme Court review.

Florida’s 1st District Court of Appeals struck down the state’s 37-year-old open carry ban Wednesday, declaring the prohibition unconstitutional and delivering a significant victory for gun rights advocates.

The three-judge panel ruled unanimously that Florida’s 1987 law violates the Second Amendment, overturning decades of precedent that made the state one of only four nationwide to ban open carry.

Charlie kirk’s final warning: don’t stop talking

The tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk is not only the loss of a cultural leader, but also a chilling reminder of what happens when we confuse speech with violence. Kirk was a tireless champion of free expression, and his death underscores the urgent need to examine how the suppression of dialogue can set the stage for real violence.

In his own words, Kirk once warned: “When people stop talking, really bad stuff starts… when you stop having a human connection with someone you disagree with, it becomes a lot easier to want to commit violence against that group. What we as a culture have to get back to is being able to have reasonable disagreement where violence is not an option.”

To justify these talking points, liberal commentators claim that violent crime actually went down under the Biden Administration.

Sure, it did, when you cook the books, which is exactly what has been going on in Washington, DC, and other Democrat-controlled metro areas.

In conclusion, high and increasing rates of violent crime represent “good business” and a good living for more than a few leftists, so violent criminals, who do leftists’ work for them, will ever be defended, coddled, apologized for, and protected from incarceration.

Like so many groups across the nation and the world, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. His untimely death has left a void in our hearts and in the advocacy for free speech and Second Amendment rights.

As a representative of many sportsmen and hunter groups of Western New York, I can say that we join in thoughts and prayers with all of America and the Firearm Industry Trade Association (NSSF®). They join the nation in grieving the loss of Kirk, founder and CEO of Turning Point USA, who was struck down by an assassin during a public open appearance at an educational institution. Kirk was a thought leader who peacefully challenged opposing viewpoints.

...accused Jewish philanthropists of fomenting anti-whiteness by supporting liberal antiracism causes like the Black Lives Matter movement.

“The philosophical foundation of anti-whiteness has been largely financed by Jewish donors in the country,” he said on his show in 2023.

Not long after, he accused Jews of controlling “not just the colleges — it’s the nonprofits, it’s the movies, it’s Hollywood, it’s all of it.”

Allies of Mr. Kirk often sought to defend him against accusations of antisemitism by citing his support for Israel. Mr. Kirk defended Israel’s actions in Gaza. After his death, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel mourned him as “a lionhearted friend of Israel” who “stood tall for Judeo-Christian civilization.”

A federal appeals court on Wednesday largely rejected a constitutional challenge to a 2022 New Jersey law that restricts where gun owners can take their firearms, upholding the state’s ban on guns in parks, beaches, casinos, bars, arenas, and other places deemed “sensitive.”

The lengthy and long-awaited ruling comes almost two years after the state’s attorneys appeared before a panel of U.S. 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals judges to defend the law from gun owners’ claims that its wide-ranging restrictions trample their Second Amendment right to bear arms wherever they go.

A North Asheville resident shot and killed a female black bear Aug. 10 in self-defense after it broke through the door and came into their home multiple times over the previous week, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

The incident caused a swirl of concern and rumor in the Beaverdam Road area, particularly on the social media platform NextDoor, wildlife biologist Ashley Hobbs told the Citizen Times Sept. 10. The commission posted a statement on NextDoor Aug. 18 as a “targeted outreach” to dispel misinformation on the platform, spokesperson Anna Gurney said. The incident was first reported by Asheville Watchdog.

A state appeals court on Wednesday in a major decision ruled Florida’s ban on openly carrying guns is unconstitutional.

A three-judge panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal, pointing to U.S. Supreme Court rulings on Second Amendment issues, said the open-carry ban is incompatible with the nation’s “historical tradition of firearm regulation.”

The state's Attorney General said his office "fully supports the Court’s decision."

He went on to say. "This is a big win for the Second Amendment rights of Floridians. As we’ve all witnessed over the last few days, our God-given right to self-defense is indispensable."

The Kitsap Rifle & Revolver Club was in existence for 100 years without any documented safety or environmental issues. The range personnel have trained and taught gun safety to the public, police, and military forces.

There is no reason for the range to be closed, except for political reasons and personal animus by public servants toward the club and disrespect of the rights of law abiding gun owners. This dual infringement of property and Second Amendment rights has dragged on for nearly three decades.

It’s a case certain to cause tremors beyond Washington’s borders if the high court grants review. The case is known as Gator’s Custom Guns, Inc. v. State of Washington, and the 32-page brief may be read here.

As many Americans appeal for unity in the wake of the assassination of Republican activist Charlie Kirk, some Florida elected officials are showing that divisions remain across the political landscape.

Palmetto Bay City Council member Steve Cody, who holds the District 2 seat, said on his Facebook account, “Charlie Kirk is a fitting sacrifice to our Lords: Smith & Wesson (gun manufacturer). Hallowed by their names.”

In an interview with Florida Politics, Cody said he was referencing a long-published statement where Kirk once said that protecting the Second Amendment was worthwhile even if some people die from shootings.

No, Charlie Kirk’s Murder Is Not an Argument for Gun Control

This ought to end all attempts to blame Kirk’s murder on America’s gun laws — or, worse, on Kirk’s support of the Second Amendment. The “older-model .30 caliber hunting rifle” is the go-to example that gun-control activists give when asked which weapons they do not want to ban. Per the FBI, the gun was a “bolt-action rifle.” This means that it was not semi-automatic, that it did not belong to the AR family, and it did not have a so-called “high capacity magazine.” This sort of gun is legal in all 50 states. It is legal in Canada. It is legal in England, for goodness sake.

Already, I have seen some people argue that what happened to Kirk was “because of the guns.”

The Trump administration’s half-baked plan to disarm transgender people is legally bankrupt

When Justice Department officials anonymously floated the idea of prohibiting gun possession by transgender people last week, they may have hoped to score points with President Donald Trump’s base or get a rise out of “woke” Democrats. Instead they elicited howls of outrage from every major gun rights group.

It is not hard to see why. This half-baked proposal, which has no obvious statutory basis, is flagrantly inconsistent with “the right of the people” to “keep and bear arms” — a right that Trump claims he is keen to protect.

NSSF Statement on Assassination of Charlie Kirk

Kirk was a man who challenged ideas with ideas. He invited open debate with those who vehemently disagreed with him. He believed in free and spirited exchange of ideas and using words to reach millions of young adults across America’s college campuses. Kirk was also a man of deep-rooted and unapologetic faith in his Creator. He was dedicated to preserving and exercising our American rights granted by that Creator and guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution, including not just First Amendment rights of Free Speech but also Second Amendment rights to keep and bear arms.

This targeted assassination of Kirk, in what can only be understood as a measure to silence his voice and ideas, is vile.

With enough political will, we can:

--Fund mental health programs.
--Restrict access to assault weapons.
--Educate gun owners to store weapons safely and provide tools to do so.
--Require waiting periods for the purchase of handguns.
--Raise more effective red flags.

When will our elected leaders put aside partisan bickering and meet this challenge on behalf of constituents who want to feel safe?

In the wake of the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York attempted to shift blame for the killing to Second Amendment supporters. Speaking to reporters in front of the Capitol building on Thursday, Ocasio-Cortez stated that members of Congress who have opposed gun control legislation have no right to “finger-point” at others for the rising tide of political violence.

“People can finger-point all they want. Look at the record, look at the actions of what we are doing,” Ocasio-Cortez said to reporters.

McDaniels was arrested on July 4, 2022, while standing at a Pensacola intersection holding a copy of the U.S. Constitution in one hand and waving to cars with the other. He carried a holstered handgun inside his waistband, visible to passersby. Although cooperative with the police and licensed for concealed carry, he was charged with violating Florida’s open carry ban, convicted, and sentenced to probation and community service.

McDaniels, backed by Florida Carry and represented by attorneys Eric Friday and Chris Crawford, appealed the conviction. The case drew support from national gun rights groups, including Gun Owners of America and attorneys connected with the Second Amendment Foundation.

“We take no issue at all with Judge Robart’s dispatch of a recidivist criminal to prison,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, “but his opinion about gun ownership amounts to a slap in the face for armed private citizens who have successfully defended themselves against criminal attacks because they had a gun. The judge’s comment also seems to minimize the courageous acts of armed citizens who have intervened and stopped mass shootings, saving countless lives in the process.

“Sorry, your honor,” Gottlieb added, “but for millions of honest citizens, having a gun in an emergency has gotten them out of trouble and prevented tragedies.”

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
Gun control? It's the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I'm a bad guy, I'm always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins. — Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, whose testimony convicted John Gotti.
