"You monster. You beast. You unspeakable bastard.
What lesson did you hope to teach us by your coward's attack on our World Trade Center, our Pentagon, us? What was it you hoped we would learn? Whatever it was, please know that you failed.
Did you want us to respect your cause? You just damned your cause.
Did you want to make us fear? You just steeled our resolve.
Did you want to tear us apart? You just brought us together."

Former governor L. Douglas Wilder chided fellow Democrat Mark R. Warner for flirting with the National Rifle Association in the Virginia governor's race and bestowed his endorsement today on only one member of the statewide ticket, attorney general hopeful A. Donald McEachin.
"Now, I'm not certainly calling the NRA skunks, but I don't believe that Mark Warner wants to be in the company" of the nation's most politically powerful gun-rights organization, Wilder added. |

"Here, you've got officers with handguns going into a gunfight with an individual with an AK-47," Sacramento County Sheriff Lou Blanas said. |

Why did licensing lose? Because the sponsors of the legislation in question, Assembly Majority Leader Kevin Shelley, D-San Francisco, and Sen. Jack Scott, D-Altadena, couldn't make a sufficiently convincing case that licensing would accomplish anything useful.
More to the point, they couldn't convince two of California's premier law enforcement organizations that licensing handgun owners was either necessary or advisable. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
No kingdom can be secured otherwise than by arming the people. The possession of arms is the distinction between a freeman and a slave. He, who has nothing, and who himself belongs to another, must be defended by him, whose property he is, and needs no arms. But he, who thinks he is his own master, and has what he can call his own, ought to have arms to defend himself, and what he possesses; else he lives precariously, and at discretion. — James Burgh, Political Disquisitions: Or, an Enquiry into Public Errors, Defects, and Abuses [London, 1774-1775]. |
