... "So who gets the credit for this bad law going bye-bye? Lots of parties will take credit, of course. But who really deserves the credit? Who stopped this law from being renewed?" ...

"Now that the ban has sunset, it is vitally important to issue a few warnings for the good of society. Please help me spread the word on these urgent reminders:" ...

Victorious on Gun Ban, NRA Looks Toward Elections

"With its battle to kill the decade-long U.S. ban on assault weapons won, the National Rifle Association is now setting its sights on the Nov. 2 presidential and congressional elections."

"The 10-year ban on importing or manufacturing certain military-style assault weapons expires on Monday because Congress never renewed it."

"While many decried its expiration and polls showed a majority of Americans supported the ban, few were ready to engage in a major fight with the NRA, the powerful gun lobby whose large financial war chest and committed 4-million membership has made it a political power for years."

"When the federal assault-weapons ban dies Monday from congressional inaction, local gun enthusiasts will be ready to celebrate."

"But not Ran Chun, who sits in his small Park Village apartment where a picture hangs of his sister Ram."

"Chun knows there would be no federal assault-weapons ban in the first place were it not for her and the others who perished in the Cleveland School shooting on Jan. 17, 1989." ...

"And now, Ran Chun mourns not just the death of his sister, but the death of a law."

" 'I lost a sister, but that gun law was to help protect innocent people like us,' said Chun."

-------
But the gun law was worthless. It didn't stop Columbine, and it wouldn't have stopped the Cleveland school tragedy.

"Area gun store owners don't expect crowds looking for assault weapons when the decade-old ban expires Monday."

" 'I think it's way blown out of proportion,' said Gregg Griffeth, 50, owner of Sportsman's Den in Shelby. 'Bill Clinton sold more assault weapons than any president in history by threatening to take them away from everybody.' " ...

"Tom Deeb, owner of Hi-Point Firearms in Mansfield, said he has no plans to make changes to the company's carbine rifle or offer high-capacity ammunition clips when the ban is lifted."

" 'We have never in our history made high-capacity clips and never will, not even for police departments... I'm the guy that designed the gun and I never intended it for high-capacity use.' "

Carl Hiassen: Bush, Kerry dodge assault weapons issue (A bigot's point of view)

"Four years ago, candidate George W. Bush did something bold and out of character for a Texas Republican: He announced his support for the controversial federal ban on certain assault-style firearms."

" 'It makes no sense for assault weapons to be around our society,' Bush declared on the campaign trail."

"Since becoming president, Bush hasn't said much of anything on the subject. ..." ...

"John Kerry, who also supports the law, has been nearly as mute as the president on the issue. When it's a choice between protecting citizens or antagonizing the National Rifle Association, both candidates are content to dodge the gun lobby." ...

"Given the current redneck leadership of the U.S. House, the assault-weapons law stood zero chance of revival without some arm-twisting by the president." ...

"Consequently, any loon, gangster, zealot or one-man militia will soon be able to purchase an easily concealed, rapid-firing, short-barreled rifle with a silencer or a flame suppressor."

-------
Any other epithets this bigot would like to use against gun owners? Is he in the habit of using "uppity n*gger" or "money-grubbing k*ke" as well? Or does he save the unsavory vitriol to generalize an entire class of people that would like to exercise their Second Amendment rights in peace?

"Opinion polls reveal that most people, including law enforcement officers, support the assault weapons ban. Nevertheless, it is not surprising to those who study the gun-control issue that the ban has been allowed to die. Serious federal gun legislation in the past four decades - the Gun Control Act of 1968, the 1993 Brady Law and the 1994 assault weapons ban - has come only when Democrats control the presidency and both houses of Congress." ...

"Gun control that seriously increases the public's safety by reducing violence and ensuring that those using guns to commit violence get caught and convicted will only come about when our nation is ready to ban handguns, as is generally the case in Europe and Asia, and require the registration of all firearms. Public opinion polls over the past three decades show that Americans are not ready for the first of these essential control measures but have no problem with the second."

-------
Luckily this country is not run by opinion polls, eh? Otherwise that "gun control" that has placed the disarmed public at the mercy of armed criminals will continue destroying this country.

"Guns never interested me, and I didn't own one until 10 years ago, just a few weeks before the semiautomatic assault-weapons ban became law."

"If it had been a pink-anvil ban, I would've loaded up on anvils like a madman. I'm contrary like that." ...

"But it was nice to have these guns (and to know how to use them) immediately after the Twin Towers fell, when we didn't know what was going on. Any terrorist creeping around my neck of the woods would have to be picked up with a sponge."

"But the absolutely galling thing about this whole experience is that the 'assault-weapons ban' wasn't a ban at all. ..."

"That same AK is still available and has been all along and is even cheaper now than when I bought mine."

"Unless President George W. Bush intervenes, the 10-year-old ban on military-style assault weapons will expire tomorrow. Letting the ban die quietly is clearly the intent of congressional leaders who disregard the opinion of law enforcement agencies and the public." ...

"Law enforcement favors extending the ban, with good reason. The Violence Policy Center, a gun-control group, found that assault weapons are disproportionately involved in killing police officers. ..."

-------
And the Brady Center doesn't have an agenda? Fact is that FBI statistics on law enforcement deaths do not differentiate between the type of rifle used to down the police officer. Ergo, the claim that "assault" weapons were used to kill 41 police officers from 1998 to 2001 is spurious at best.

"Depending on to whom you listen, Monday marks the beginning of the end of the world or nothing much will happen as the result of the expiration of a ban against certain kinds of attachments to a small number of weapons. The Clinton Administration called them assault weapons when the ban was approved 10 years ago. Criminals rarely use these kinds of weapons, preferring handguns instead."

"The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF), which opposes restrictions on firearm ownership, has been particularly critical of journalists who get the story wrong. The group strongly criticizes media that show file tape of automatic weapons while the reporter talks about the 'assault weapons ban.' "

"For Mary Ann Doberenz, Monday's expiration of the 1994 assault weapons ban doesn't mean a whole lot."

"Doberenz, co-owner of the Guns and Things gun shop in Penndel, said that to most of her customers an assault weapon is a baseball bat. Although her store, for the first time in 10 years, would be able to stock semiautomatic weapons such as TEC-9s, Uzis and AK-47 assault rifles, there are no plans to do so, she said." ...

"...Pro-ban legislators said that since semiautomatic weapons weren't used for hunting or skeet shooting, they had no place on the nation's streets. Anti-ban legislators said that guns weren't the problem, it was the people behind them."

"No one is more agonized about this than California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the Democrat who sponsored the legislation in 1993 and for whom it had become a signature issue."

" 'This is the darkest time for me in my Senate career,' she said in an interview last week. 'I really believe people are safer because of the ban. I really believe the number of weapons on the street has diminished.' "

-------
Government statistics prove her wrong. The National Institute of Justice found no supporting proof that this ban had any effect on crime. But for DiFi it's all about her vague "feelings" and very little about facts.

So, the Korean shop owners who used these weapons to defend themselves and their property during the 1992 LA riots are murderers, Mr. Bratton? Do they not deserve the best weapons of self defense out there, or is that reserved for you and your fellow bureaucratic tyrants?

"But local gun shops say the expiration of the assault weapons ban will have little effect on the types of guns and accessories that are typically sold and traded across their counters every day."

"Gun-rights activist Rick Stanley, a Denver businessman and former Libertarian candidate for the U.S. Senate, was sentenced to six years in prison Friday for threatening two judges." ...

"In addition to prison time - three years each for the two judges - Stanley was sentenced to six years of mandatory parole and ordered to pay $10,000 in fines, plus $8,250 restitution to police who worked overtime to protect the judges. Quinn set an $80,000 bond and said Stanley must be monitored by the court until his appeal is resolved." ...

"Stanley was found guilty in late June of two felony counts of attempting to influence a public official. He was accused of sending Thornton Municipal Judge Charles J. "Monday's expiration of a federal ban on assault weapons will plunge Denver into uncharted territory, highlighting the city's court fight with the legislature on the question of who has the power to regulate guns."

"At issue is whether the city can enforce its own assault weapons ban, which predated the federal law by five years, in the wake of state legislation passed in 2003 that, on its face, shot the Denver ordinance down."

"Denver officials believe they can, and they have filed suit alleging that the state law violates the city's power to govern itself under the home-rule provisions of the Colorado Constitution."

"The Arme clothing line includes a T-shirt with a large picture of a handgun and the words: 'Welcome to the hood. There are no gun factories in my hood and there are no gun shops in my hood, so if my T-shirt shocks you then fix the problem because this is just a T-shirt. Imagine this pistol being pointed in your face so somebody can eat tonight. This is my daily reality. Welcome to the hood.' "

"Kathy McBride-Thomas, who lost her son to gun violence in 1993 and now serves as president of Mothers Against Gun Violence, said it's inappropriate to sell the clothing line in a city where young people are shot way too often."

"Although the T-shirts appear to promote an anti-violence message, McBride-Thomas said most people would focus on the large picture of the gun and not the 'small print.' "
