Cleveland, OH Mayor 'All Wet' on Anti-Gun Proposal to Stem Crime, Says CCRKBA

"A proposal by anti-gun Cleveland, OH Mayor Frank Jackson to make firearm possession illegal by anyone under age 21 is a non-solution to a genuine problem of violent crime, and like all gun control laws, it targets the wrong people, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today."

"Mayor Jackson's suggestion came after the killing of a 12-year-old girl caught in a crossfire near her home Sept. 1. However, one of the suspects in that gun battle, Eric Romel Wilson, would not have been affected by such a law because he is 35 years old, and due to his criminal history, he cannot legally own a gun." ...

... "The new Witness felt good in the hand with the grip being at just the right angle and size to match the contour of my hands, balance was also perfect. After loading 15 rounds of 9mm ammo in the magazine, I fired five rounds at the target I had set up about 15 yards away, the group was about three inches wide and about two inches left of center. Not bad I thought, considering this was the first time I had ever fired the pistol." ...

"During the period of complete lawlessness, that is sure to follow any type of collapse, be it peak oil, economic or wide reaching pandemic, you my be forced into a situation where defending your home or retreat against mobs of semi-organized gangs of looters of even well-organized and well armed paramillitary bands of outlaws will become necessary. Living near a military base or national guard armory would tend to make the latter of the two much more likely." ...

Any collapse of the present system whether brought about by peak oil collapse, a severe economic down turn, pandemic or whatever makes you wake in a cold sweat at 4:00 am, will bring out the worst in a lot of the unprepared. Just look back to New Orleans in the days after Hurricane Katrina." ...

The owner of a massage parlor in Boise fired at least one shot at a would-be burglar who had broken into the business through a bathroom window - but was thwarted by a locked door.

The incident occurred this morning at about 3 a.m.

That's when somebody slipped into Tokyo Massage, which advertises a "relaxation jacuzzi" as well as a sauna and steam room.

When the business owner noticed the break-in attempt was underway, she called her husband - who fired one shot as the burglar fled.

Officers say nothing was stolen, and it didn't appear as though the bullet struck the robber.

"Dick Heller's status in the District of Columbia is clear: He is a special police officer with a responsible job. By day he's an armed guard at the Federal Judicial Center. But when he applied under D.C. law for permission to keep a pistol at his home, permission was denied."

"Sometimes, as Beadle Bumble said in 'Oliver Twist,' the law is indeed 'a ass, a idiot.' Heller and other plaintiffs challenged the district's ordinance. They lost in U.S. District Court but won a notable victory last March on appeal to the D.C. Circuit. Now, regrettably, Mayor Adrian Fenty has appealed Judge Laurence H. Silberman's opinion to the Supreme Court. We will know in a few weeks if the high court will hear the city's argument." ...

"Gun control advocates want the government to be able to regulate weapons to protect innocent people, while gun rights proponents argue that the Second Amendment guarantees citizens a right to own weapons, primarily so that they can protect themselves."

"If the Supreme Court sides with Washington, D.C. and upholds the handgun ban, it would validate the legal arguments of the gun control camp."

"If the court sides with the appeals court and declares the D.C. ban unconstitutional, it could become difficult, but not impossible, for the government to regulate ownership and use of guns ..." ...

Court must face up to gun issue

"It would be inconceivable for the Supreme Court to turn down the District of Columbia's recent petition to decide whether one of the strictest anti-gun laws in the nation will be reinstated, overturning an appeals-court ruling that every American has the right to own a firearm and the capital city has no right to curtail that."

"Few constitutional issues in modern times have cried out for closure more than the argument over whether the Second Amendment protects an individual's right to bear arms or is actually a collective privilege meant to safeguard a state's ability to raise a militia. Yet, since 1939, the nation's highest court has been reluctant to deal substantively with the matter." ...

FULL TEXT BELOW:

A Wayne County School went into lockdown this morning after gunshots were heard nearby.

Police say Louis Lowe fired gunshots near the Spring Valley Bridge this morning. Kellogg Elementary School immediately went into lockdown and pulled students off the playground.

Police say Lowe was just taking target practice in his own yard, but the noise startled neighbors. Investigators say he was not shooting at any person, but at a target. He will face a misdemeanor charge for firing the gun so close to homes and a school. Lowe tells WSAZ's Doug Korstanje he won't do this again.

Spring Valley Road was closed down and Kellogg Elementary went into lockdown for a short time. However, both are back open at this hour.

"A teacher in fear for her life from her x-husband is being denied her second amendment rights to carry a concealed weapon for her own self defense even though she has a valid CCW permit. What is she supposed to do, walk around defenseless & hope that she won't be attacked while she is away from her home, or that the Police could come & save her before any harm is done? The more Mr Moran opens his mouth, the more he proves that he has a lot to learn. How exactly did this guy become Chairman of a School Board? Just a few of his statements & my response to them:" ...

"On Monday, he took a very public stand to try to curb violence and prevent young thugs from brandishing guns. ... Jackson called for a new Ohio law to make it illegal for people under 21 years of age to possess firearms."

"Beyond any doubt, Cleveland has a violence problem ... So it's good to see the mayor showing more concern about the city's homicides."

"Community columnist Mark A. Sity attempted to shoot down Gov. Jim Doyle's plans to combat violent crime, but the bullet lodged in his foot ('It's the criminals, stupid,' Sept. 7)."

"He repeated the crazy idea that since criminals will disobey a law, there's no point having the law. Licensing guns is important and necessary, just as is the licensing of cars. Yes, that may involve a cost, but gun ownership is a privilege as well as a right." ...

Submitter's Note: Since the governor's proposals are designed to prevent certain non-harmful acts, rather than punish certain harmful acts, then the fact that criminals will disobey the law is precisely the point.

The body of a 41-year-old man was found in a wooded area next to a guillotine he built and used to kill himself, police said.

The man, from the Detroit suburb of Melvindale, was discovered Monday by workers from a shopping center near his home.

Allen Park Deputy Police Chief Dale Covert said the roughly six-foot tall guillotine was bolted to a tree and included a swing arm. Covert said police also found several store receipts detailing the materials used to assemble the device.

"I can't even tell you how long it must have taken him to construct," he said. "This man obviously was very determined to end his life."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government. — George Washington
