Gear Preview: Timney Trigger – Ruger 10/22

"My Ruger 10/22 is my most used, most cherished, and most loved gun in my collection. It was my first gun; she joined the family for my twelfth birthday. While I would never disparage such a 'mature' lady, she’s begun to feel her age. After fifteen or twenty thousand rounds, she’s a bit gritty, stiff, and hard to get moving. So I’ve decided the old girl needs a bit of work. As the Ruger I won’t be going crazy. No fancy stocks, bull barrels or high end optics for me. I’ll be starting with the small items and going from there. Starting with a Timney trigger . . ." ...

... "There are a lot of lessons to draw from this incident. Always secure your gun or guns securely. (In the famous FBI Miami shootout two officers lost their guns in a car wreck; one from his lap one from under his leg.) Cops' marksmanship generally sucks. And my favorite: you're not the good guy." [emphasis added]

"That’s as far as the police are concerned. And BOY are they concerned when there’s a gun anywhere in the picture. Yours, theirs, someone else’s—any gun will send them into, uh, 'intellectual shock.' At that point, fellow officers in uniform are the only other guaranteed good guys. Everyone else is a potential target. And that means you." ...

Defending the Self-Defense Case Pt. 1

"A self-defense case is fundamentally different from most other criminal prosecutions. The essence of the defense is that the defendant is the victim of an attempted or completed violent felony such as assault, rape, or homicide which, but for the defendant's lawful actions, would have resulted in the defendant's death or in serious bodily harm. The complainant is, in fact, a violent aggressor who, but for the defendant's lawful actions, would be the one standing trial. The defendant is the 'good guy' and the victim is the 'bad guy,' despite the prosecution’s efforts to portray the converse." ...

"A lengthy discussion about eyewitness memory and perception is outside the scope of this article. The nature of a self-defense situation generally means that the client and the witnesses will not be able to accurately recall what happened. This is normal. Self-defense situations develop very quickly. Bystanders who were not paying attention to the situation may not take notice until after a loud noise or sudden movement. Thus, they may miss important cues that led the client to believe he or she was in imminent danger. Once a weapon has been displayed, weapon focus will cause the witnesses to watch it, and perhaps miss other important events during the incident . . ." ...

Speaking of "Fast and Furious": NRA Leaders Well-Versed in Fomenting Foreign Conflicts

... "Although we don't know all the facts yet, it's clear that 'Fast and Furious' was an ill-conceived and reckless operation -- and it may have cost lives. It also cost two high-level officials their jobs -- on August 30, ATF acting director Kenneth Melson and U.S. Attorney for Arizona Dennis Burke announced their resignations. New leadership can help refocus the agency on its mission--preventing all illegal firearms diversion from U.S. gun stores and gun shows with zero tolerance. Because this is also clear--the 2,000 guns that were allowed to walk in 'Fast and Furious' represent just a tiny percentage of the high-powered firearms that are trafficked from the United States to Mexico in the course of a given year." ...

"National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea pointed out early this month that every time the 'Project Gunwalker' atrocity is described as a 'botched gun sting,' a lie is being disseminated. The lie is the notion that there wasever the intention of mounting any kind of 'sting' to 'botch.' There was not. There could not have been. No effort was made to track the guns past the border (or, very often, even to the border). When field agents tried to track them any farther than a few blocks from the gun shops, they were ordered to stand down their surveillance. Nor is it the case that the plan was for Mexican authorities to be tipped about what was going on, so they could perform the surveillance." ...

"Much like past interpretation of Michigan's suppressor law, that has been taken to mean that only government entities may possess machine guns that were not already in legal private possession prior to 1986. However, under the federal law that already applied to machine gun transfers, with all the federal hoops (including a $200 dollar tax per firearm, fingerprints, and the requirement to obtain the approval of local law enforcement), it would seem difficult to argue that the transfer or possession is not 'under the authority of, the United States or any department or agency thereof or a State, or a department, agency, or political subdivision thereof.'" ...
