Fifty years after his passing, we find more indications Harry Truman was “One Of Us.” Harry S Truman was president of the United States when I was born — and, yes, I am old. Reading history left me with a lot of respect for the man. From the firearms perspective, I can’t find any indication he ever supported any sort of “gun control,” which is more than can be said for the president he succeeded, Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

I’m a fan of taking my personal Benelli shotgun into the field for a hunt, but mine is hardly a refined affair. I generally stick to my trusty, though large, Benelli Nova pump-action chambered for 3.5-inch loads. It’s rugged, affordable, and gets the job done, but I wouldn’t call it a speed shooter by any means.

North Carolina AR-maker Bear Creek Arsenal this week moved into the handgun market with its new optics-ready GENES1S pistol series. While it may look like your standard striker-fired 9mm, the GENES1S is a little different, using an all-metal lower crafted from 7075 T6 aluminum-- a medium with which Bear Creek is very familiar. Suppressor and accessory-ready, the new handgun comes standard with a 4.5-inch threaded Bear Claw fluted barrel made from 416R stainless steel while the frame has a true M1913 Picatinny rail underneath the slide.

The Expansion Mono-Block, or EMB, line is Fiocchi’s premier low-penetration and rapid-expansion ammo, created exclusively for defense use. As of 2015, you’ll only find this in the 9mm Luger variety, making it a very specialized round comparable to Federal Premium’s Hydra-Shock personal defense rounds. The EMBs are part of the Extrema brand from Fiocchi, sharing some similarities with traditional hollow points and other expanding ammunition.
