France Battles New Wave of Street Crime

While crime rates are plummeting across the United States, France has been besieged by violent crime.

Armed robberies in Paris are up 61 percent for the first half of 2000, and authorities say kids with guns and the city's growing, permanent, poor and disenfranchised underclass are major factors for the crime increase.

"Ironically, France has some of the strictest gun laws in the world. It is extremely difficult to obtain a gun legally for purposes other than hunting."

"The star of the rap group Bone Thugs-N-Harmony pleaded no contest to possession of a sawed-off shotgun in connection with a January confrontation at a relative's house."

"Stanley Howse, known as Flesh-N-Bone, entered the plea Wednesday and is expected to be sentenced to two years on Oct. 24, prosecutor Eric Lavine said."

"The 27-year-old Grammy winner also faces sentencing later this month in Van Nuys in an assault case involving threats using an AK-47 machine gun."

...estimated 100,000 gun owners in Clark County, but there's a declining number of places people can go for target practice.

Assemblyman John Lee, D-Las Vegas, and Chuck Musser, a member of the Las Vegas Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, are leading a drive to get from 2,500 to 5,000 acres near Nellis Air Force Base for a public shooting range.

"We want to build a shooting center where enthusiasts can go and not cause harm to people," Lee said.

Says he'll push it in 2001...

"After meeting with much success, the M26 Taser pistol, which disarms subjects with an electric shock, will be put into use by the Seattle Police Department, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Sept. 9.
"I'm so impressed with it. This is the latest and the greatest," said Steve Ward, a SWAT officer who recently used the Taser pistol to disarm a knife-wielding man."

AP story, detailing an 11 year old boy "accidently" shot in the back during a raid on his parents home. Does this count as another child lost to "gun Violence"? A nine month investigation, and they couldn't wait until the kids were at school???

"A Quebec journalist known for aggressive coverage of the Hells Angels and their bloody campaign for control of the Canadian drug trade was shot and wounded yesterday outside the offices of the newspaper Journal de Montreal, where he works."
