"For months, President Bush's advisers have assured a skittish public that law-abiding Americans have no reason to fear the long reach of the antiterrorism law known as the Patriot Act because its most intrusive measures would require a judge's sign-off."

"But in a plan announced this week to expand counterterrorism powers, President Bush adopted a very different tack. In a three-point presidential plan that critics are already dubbing Patriot Act II, Mr. Bush is seeking broad new authority to allow federal agents — without the approval of a judge or even a federal prosecutor — to demand private records and compel testimony."

"To aid the fight against terrorism, the Bush administration wants to add a subpoena power that does not require federal investigators to seek approval from a judge or grand jury."

"Justice Department officials say use of 'administrative subpoenas' would enable the FBI to obtain information from records or witnesses that might more quickly prevent a terrorist strike."

"Critics say the extension of power is unnecessary and would permit investigations with no judicial supervision." ...

"Legislation authorizing the new power would require that the person getting the subpoena in national security cases keep that information secret from nearly everyone except his lawyer."

"S. 504 and H.R. 1078 are bills that would continue the dangerous trend towards erasing our foundational principles from America's schools -- principles such as the right to keep and bear arms."

"These companion bills will fund the creation of Presidential Academies that will train educators. No doubt, these educators will be trained in revisionist history and civics, because federally subsidized curricula in the schools have been teaching this already -- chipping away at our national sovereignty and the notion of God-given rights for several years."

"This radical new power is unnecessary as well as dangerous. " ...

Asked to account for the extraordinary power proposed in the bill, a department spokeswoman initially suggested that Mr. Feeney may have drafted it badly. Only when it was pointed out that similar language had appeared in the so-called "Patriot II" draft bill the Justice Department prepared and leaked early this year did the department even acknowledge that it supports this bill as written. We hope Congress will take a different view.

"South Africa has a new gun control law that comes right out of Sen. Charles Schumer's playbook. Gun owners are licensed, their guns registered, and the quantity of ammunition and firearms they can own is strictly limited. Most gun owners are limited to owning four firearms -- legally. Happily the country is awash in illegal guns, and hopefully the good guys will stock up while the opportunity permits." ..."

FULL TEXT BELOW:

I have read with interest recent editorials on guns in schools side-by-side with angry statements from parents about medical treatment decisions for Parker Jensen. Many parents may not know the connection between the two issues.

Utah law gives unique protection to concealed-weapon permit holders and keeps their names secret from the public. As a parent, you have no right to know if a teacher, coach, employee or volunteer in your child's school is carrying a gun. Shouldn't all parents have the same right to protect their children and make profound parental decisions that the Jensens seek? Being able to know if a gun is in your child's classroom seems like a very important parental right.
