However, the majority of committee members were resistant to law enforcement testimony, on the grounds that the permitting requirement is an infringement of their Second Amendment rights.
Currently in Indiana, handgun carry permits are denied to people who have a propensity for violent or emotionally unstable conduct, people who have been convicted of certain weapons offenses and people who have records of abusing alcohol or drugs.
Also, along with the vast majority of other states, Indiana requires a criminal background check before a person can get a permit and carry a concealed handgun. Permitless carry would remove all these safeguards and decrease law enforcement’s ability to keep us safe. |

Lunenburg County Commonwealth’s Attorney Robert Clement announced today that he and the Multi-Jurisdiction Grand Jury have agreed that the store clerk at the Little B Convenience Store in Victoria will not be prosecuted for the fatal shooting of an armed robber.
Clement said he called the jury, which consists of citizens from the counties of Campbell, Charlotte, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg and Pittsylvania, to meet on September 11, 2017 at Lunenburg Courthouse, to allow citizens to be a part of the process in determining whether charges should be placed. |

At first glance, nothing differentiates Vernetta Robinzine from passers-by in the Beverly neighborhood on Chicago’s Far South Side. On a recent evening, like most people on a workday, she donned business casual attire with a loose, bright blouse. But her daily wardrobe includes something unseen that gives her confidence.
Robinzine, 51, is a gun owner with a concealed carry license. Since she received her permit in late spring, she carries her firearm wherever she goes.
“It’s like a part of me now,” Robinzine said with the smile. |

Nancy Taylor is a gun safety advocate living on the West Coast.
Last year, I sent a donation of $358.16 to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. The amount was the sum of money that I received after selling my Ruger revolver.
I never really wanted to own the revolver, but my husband thought I should be able to protect myself if someone entered our home when he was not around. I had my concerns about having the gun, but as anyone who's ever been married will tell you, sometimes you just know when you’re not going to win. He persisted, and I relented. |

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, the campaign arm of one of the nation's biggest gun control groups, announced Thursday that it would spend at least $1 million in Virginia as part of an "initial investment" to elect Democrats in November.
The fund is donating $450,000 directly to gubernatorial contender Ralph Northam, and spending $250,000 on mailers on his behalf. It's also giving $300,000 to Attorney General Mark Herring for his re-election bid, as he faces attack advertising from the National Rifle Association. |

There’s been a great deal of talk lately about whether doctors in the United States should be asking patients questions about gun ownership, a practice that began getting attention around the time the Obama administration was working to declare the firearm ownership a public health crisis. If you want to make sure your doctor sticks to actual health-related topics, this app could be for you. |

He is better then anyone in the Republican Party! Not because he is the “most libertarian” (he isn’t). But because he is the most marketable! Oh, and he is serious too!
Want to end the Drug War? Senator Paul is your man.
Want real Second Amendment support (not just sound bites from Ted Nugent)? Rand Paul 2020 might be your jam.
Want a tax code that makes some semblance of common sense? Then you want to “Stand With Rand.” |

Word had already spread at the Livermore Rod and Gun Club, about 50 miles east of San Francisco, that a group of self-described liberals were at the range.
“A liberal gun club. Isn’t that some kind of oxymoron?” cracked one of the shooters to another as he leaned back on a bench to rest between rounds. “Yeah,” said his friend. “I guess we could use some liberals who don’t hate guns.”
Members of The Liberal Gun Club are used to snarky remarks from other shooters. The club formed in 2009 as a loose community of gun owners who wanted to shoot and talk firearms, but were put off by the rhetoric of gun confiscation and the evils of Democrats that they often encounter at gun stores, shooting ranges, and in gun forums. |

When Kansas City police on Saturday ordered several armed demonstrators, including members of antifa groups, to remove ammunition from their guns during a protest at Washington Square Park, some observers had questions.
Why did police disarm the protesters? Is that legal, given that Missouri allows “open carry” with no permit?
Did police take this kind of action on Aug. 20, when militia members appeared at an anti-hate rally near the Country Club Plaza with handguns and rifles? |

In the ongoing “Bundy” trials, as they’ve come to be known, on Aug. 22, a jury was unable to convict four defendants who were retried this summer after prosecutors failed to get a conviction the first time around. Two of those four, Steven Stewart and Richard Lovelien, have been acquitted of all charges and are free men. O. Scott Drexler and Eric Parker, however, were acquitted on most but not all counts and are still in federal custody. After languishing in federal prison for around 18 months like the rest of the defendants in this saga, Drexler and Parker have been released to home detention. |

One measure calls for the easing of restrictions on gun silencers and suppressors, including getting rid of a $200 tax. It would also bar states from imposing their own regulations or levies on silencers. Billed as a “hearing protection” provision, the relaxation of rules on equipment that’s more suited to Mossad agents than moose hunters was this week dropped into a wider House bill called the Sportsmen’s Heritage and Recreational Enhancement Act. |

We’re used to doctors asking about habits that may affect our health, from smoking to having sex. And that’s also true of the pediatricians who take care of our children by educating parents about how to minimize everyday health risks.
"Pediatricians are comfortable talking about seat belts and poisons and stuff because we all, just through living, have exposure to those things," Garen Wintemute, an emergency room doctor and public health researcher at the University of California, Davis, told Newsweek. Other less widespread risks, like smoking, are discussed extensively in medical schools. "Firearms are different; firearms aren't an unmitigated hazard like smoking, and firearms have legitimate uses." |

The Asking Saves Kids (ASK) campaign is effective in increasing parents' comfort level in asking if there is a gun where their child plays, according to research being presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) 2017 National Conference & Exhibition in Chicago Monday, Sept. 18.
"Gun violence is a public health epidemic in the United States, but a simple question or short conversation about gun safety can protect children from this danger," said lead author Nina Agrawal MD, FAAP. "This study shows us that parents are far more likely to ask about guns in a home before a playdate if they feel empowered by their pediatricians to do so, and asking can save precious young lives." |

Cardinal Blase Cupich is foolish to think that banning guns on church and school property increases safety. It is, in fact, an unsafe measure for peace-loving churchgoers and school-age children.
People who legally carry concealed weapons must go through background checks, attend gun safety classes and be certified by the state. Their guns must be registered with the state. They have a right to protect themselves from predators who abide by none of these safeguards and requirements. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
Some writers have so confounded society with government, as to leave little or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only different, but have different origins ... Society is in every state a blessing, but Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one. — THOMAS PAINE |
