"In a confrontation last month, Mike Singleton fatally shot Marc 'Smooth' Collins, who wounded Singleton in April. Singleton says Kinloch police took no action after the first incident. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch says flatly, 'That police department should not exist, and if it were my call, it wouldn't.' "

"Mike Singleton says he dreaded a confrontation he figured was inevitable. Widely known as 'Big Mike,' the hulking Singleton carried a pistol for protection as he sold cigarettes and candy from behind bulletproof glass in the convenience store he owns in his tough hometown of Kinloch."

"For four months, he had nervously watched over his shoulder for the return of a man he knew by the street name 'Smooth.' He was the man Singleton said shot him in the leg in April, in a quarrel he was sure was not yet over."

"On Aug. 13, Singleton said, customers told him that Smooth was outside leaning on the wall, selling drugs, waving a gun and talking trash."

"Calling the Kinloch police did not seem an option. Singleton said he had begged them for months to lock up Smooth, whose real name is Marc Collins. But they simply ignored him."

"So whatever was about to happen that hot summer night between Singleton and Collins, it would be just the two of them." ...

"A SECRET blueprint for US global domination reveals that President Bush and his cabinet were planning a premeditated attack on Iraq to secure 'regime change' even before he took power in January 2001."

"The blueprint, uncovered by the Sunday Herald, for the creation of a 'global Pax Americana' was drawn up for Dick Cheney (now vice- president), Donald Rumsfeld (defence secretary), Paul Wolfowitz (Rumsfeld's deputy), George W Bush's younger brother Jeb and Lewis Libby (Cheney's chief of staff). The document, entitled Rebuilding America's Defences: Strategies, Forces And Resources For A New Century, was written in September 2000 by the neo-conservative think-tank Project for the New American Century (PNAC)."

"Two Pennsylvania State Police troopers were charged by federal authorities yesterday with stealing money from suspected drug dealers in unrelated incidents."

The trafficker, who was not identified, complained to authorities and then worked secretly with investigators."

"Jeffrey A. Lampinski, head of the FBI in Philadelphia, told reporters at a Center City news conference that the two troopers were committing their crimes independently. There was no evidence that other troopers were involved in the crimes, Lampinski added."

"Wayns, 31, of the 7400 block of Cedar Lane in Elkins Park, and China, 35, of the 6900 block of Limekiln Pike in West Oak Lane, were each charged with extortion by a law enforcement officer."

"If the United States is at war against terrorism to preserve freedom, a new coalition of conservatives and liberals is asking, why is it doing so by wholesale abrogation of civil liberties? They cite the Halloween-week passage of the antiterrorism bill — a new law that carries the almost preposterously gimmicky title: 'Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act' (USA PATRIOT Act). Critics both left and right are saying it not only strips Americans of fundamental rights but does little or nothing to secure the nation from terrorist attacks."

"What does [U.S. Rep. Ron] Paul believe the nation's Founding Fathers would think of this law? 'Our forefathers would think it's time for a revolution. This is why they revolted in the first place.' "

"Federal charges filed Thursday against two men who allegedly 'intimidated' a flight crew, causing the aircraft to change course and land in Fort Smith, send a clear message that the government 'will not tolerate behavior that crosses the line' aboard aircraft, U.S. Attorney Tom Gean said."

"Gurdeep Singh Wander, 48, and Harinder Pal Singh, 41, were charged with 'interference with flight crew members and attendants' in U.S. District Court in Fort Smith. The charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison."

"The two men, arrested Wednesday after being taken from the aircraft, appeared tired but calm when brought before U.S. Magistrate Judge Beverly Stites Jones. Both said they understood the charges against them. Wander of New Jersey is a U.S. citizen. Singh of Saylorsburg, Pa., is an Indian national."

"It's mid-September during alleged wartime. Do you know where your government is?"

"This much is all too obviously true: We have no real idea what our government is doing right now, at this moment, as you read this. And we find this enormously reassuring."

"We know far less than we think we know and far less than we want to believe and that is apparently exactly the way we like it, because otherwise it's just so frustrating and depressing and gives us just the worst sort of collective cultural eczema."

"We have, for example, precious little idea what bombs are being dropped, and where, and with what ulterior motives; it's the most secretive and media-unfriendly "war" in recent history, and no one really minds, because it just makes things so much easier." ...

"There is this gap, you see, this enormous, gaping separation between what the honest and ardent and yet often shockingly misinformed populace believes drives the heart of this great nation, and what actually drives it."

"Ironic, isn't it, given how deeply immersed we are in the Information Age, in a time when we all have access to a thousand newspapers and a million muckraking insiders and secret documents and articles and columns and photos, the government and corporations only become increasingly paranoid and terrified and hence have to quintuple their efforts to keep us in the proverbial dark."

"It was Stone who called the Georgia State Patrol on her cell phone Thursday morning after she overheard several men talking and laughing about what she thought might be a terrorist plot while she was eating breakfast at a Shoney's restaurant. Her call prompted a Southern search that ended early Friday when two cars carrying the three men were stopped on Florida's 'Alligator Alley' interstate near Miami."

Nonetheless, simple safety modifications recommended more than 15 years ago by engineers who set industry standards have not been written into regulatory laws in most states. "Bechtel, who now is paralyzed on the left side of his body, was found to have sufficiently recovered from his injuries to face legal proceedings, so Schuylkill County District Attorney Frank Cori scheduled a hearing Friday before District Justice David Plachko."

"Bechtel remains hospitalized but will probably be discharged soon, police said. He appeared without an attorney and answered the district justice's questions in a raspy whisper."

"Bechtel's wife, Raienhna Bechtel, 22, had been granted a protection order in March barring him from having any contact with her."

Once again, a piece of paper proves much less effective than a shotgun would have.

"A Delta Air Lines flight about to leave LaGuardia Airport for Fort Lauderdale Saturday afternoon returned to the gate after a passenger told a flight attendant he had brought a bomb onboard, police said."

"Passengers were taken off the plane and the man was arrested, said Port Authority Police Sgt. John O'Donnell. A search of the man's luggage and the plane, with at least one bomb-sniffing dog, turned up no explosives, O'Donnell said."

"Flight 1503 was scheduled to leave at 3:30 p.m. Saturday when a flight attendant asked the male passenger to take off some electronic equipment he was using. The man then said, 'There's a bomb in my bag in the overhead compartment,' O'Donnell said."

"Fellow passenger Karla Guadamuz told CNN the man may have been joking about having a bomb. She said she witnessed the arrest and heard him say about the bomb comment, 'I shouldn't have said that.' "

"FRESH calls were made yesterday for action to curb the country's weapon culture after new figures revealed an alarming rise in the number of people killed and wounded by guns."

"The Scottish Executive research report showed 348 people were shot dead or injured last year compared to 306 in 2000 - a rise of 14%. The number of criminals accused of wielding guns, which had been pushed below the 1000-mark, also rose during 2001 to 1030."

"SNP shadow deputy justice minister Michael Matheson said the figures followed statistics revealed by his party two weeks ago which highlighted a 500% increase in convictions for carrying offensive weapons. He added: 'Justice minister Jim Wallace must awaken from his slumber and take action to tackle the growing problem of weapon carrying in Scotland.' Scots Tory justice spokesman Lord James Douglas-Hamilton added: 'I am shocked by the sheer scale of the increases.' "

"He said statistics suggested the sentencing policy was failing and called for 'an urgent review. It is time to strike fear of detection and deterrence into criminals before they strike fear into innocent law-abiding citizens.' "

"We have common-sense gun laws here in the state of Maryland and he wants to roll them back. That's wrong," Townsend told a rally of supporters as she opened her Baltimore headquarters. "We're saying to Congressman Ehrlich and your [National Rifle Association] friends, 'Stay out of Baltimore and stay out of our state.'"

Gee, a candidate promises to review draconian gun legislation in Maryland and a Kennedy gets angry. Who's shocked?

ANNISTON, ALA. – "Some nights, when he is in a worrying mood, Samuel Robinson sits by himself in the glow from his television screen and counts the windows in his home."

"It could get in here, he thinks."

"It could get in there."

"Any place a breath of air could creep in, he says, so could a tiny amount of deadly vapor, a smidgen of the poison gas that the nearby chemical-weapons incinerator plans to begin burning in October, after years of delay, cost overruns and safety concerns."

" 'And I'll be thinking, what could I do?' said Robinson, 74, who lives just a few miles from the Anniston Army Depot, where stockpiles of deadly nerve gas and mustard gas, some of it leaking from corroded shells, rockets and barrels, await destruction in a $1 billion incineration plant."

SODUS, MICHIGAN -- "None of the 36 guns seized in February at a Sodus Township home were illegal, federal authorities say, but the owners still may not get them back."

"Because police found less than a half-ounce of marijuana, the U.S. Attorney's Office has launched civil forfeiture proceedings to keep the guns and 28,359 rounds of ammunition, Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Delaney said from his Grand Rapids office. He said felony criminal charges could follow if prosecutors conclude the owners lied on gun registration forms when answering standard questions about possible drug use."

"Tricia Carrie-LaVanway Bauer, who owns the guns with her father, David LaVanway, and her husband, Blaine, said the marijuana possession was a fluke, a one-time occurrence."

" 'Just one time, and they're going to take 36 guns away? C'mon ...,' she said." ...

You've got to read the rest of this story to believe it -- and then it's still unbelievable.

"Two teens were raped in separate incidents in Brooklyn and Manhattan, police said yesterday."

"Through Sept. 8, rapes citywide had dropped 14.5 percent, to 372, from 435 for the same time frame last year."

"In March, with rapes up 9 percent, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly set up a task force to deal with the issue and promised to refocus the department's efforts on combating the problem."

Carrying a firearm in the city that never sleeps is strictly prohibited -- making easy pickens for people who force innocent females to have sex.

"A man holding a four-year-old boy hostage in a bungled robbery at a Vancouver laundromat and video store was attacked and beaten by passers-by."

"In the dramatic confrontation, captured live by TV cameras, the citizens struck and kicked the man, then restrained him until police arrived."

"The unarmed robber put down the child, who was frightened but unhurt, when he was confronted by a number of men, some using chairs as shields. He made his way outside, ready to flee."

"It was then that he was stomped and beaten by a number of men who came to the aid of the store owner."

"After taking some kung fu blows to the midsection and a few kicks to the head and groin, the robber went down like a sack of rice."

"A Global TV crew that was in the area videotaped the incident."

Unfortunately, this website doesn't let us see the video.

"Think using Yahoo or Hotmail e-mail at work protects you from your boss’ prying eyes? Think again. New spy software essentially lets employers, librarians, or parents co-pilot virtually any kind of e-mail account, including private Web-based e-mail accounts like Yahoo and Hotmail. A new version of eBlaster spyware will secretly forward all e-mail coming and going through such Web-based accounts to a spy’s e-mail, allowing anyone to 'ride-along' even the supposedly private e-mail."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
To trust arms in the hands of the people at large has, in Europe, been believed...to be an experiment fraught only with danger. Here by a long trial it has been proved to be perfectly harmless...If the government be equitable; if it be reasonable in its exactions; if proper attention be paid to the education of children in knowledge and religion, few men will be disposed to use arms, unless for their amusement, and for the defence of themselves and their country. — Timothy Dwight, Travels in New England and New York [London 1823]
