Wherever you go in Northeast Michigan, you are probably not far from someone who is carrying a concealed firearm.
And recent trends indicate that more people in the region are arming themselves — especially women.
The Michigan State Police says there are 2,346 active concealed carry permits in Alpena County, and an additional 1,667 which need renewal. Of the 4,083 applications considered by the state through Sept. 3, 41 were denied, 57 are pending, eight were revoked and 12 suspended.
Bill Scheuner, a licensed National Rifle Association instructor in Hubbard Lake, said demand for classes began to increase about 10 years ago. He has had to add courses and there is still a waiting list of people wanting to attend.

The proverbial “ripple effect” of Democrat presidential hopeful Robert Francis “Beto” O’Rourke’s threat to “take your AR15, your AK47” during the debate turned into something of a tidal wave at an Arizona gun store that offered “Beto Specials” on specific models of the popular semi-auto rifle, and that’s not all.
The former congressman-turned-candidate has also displayed his use of a vulgarity in an argument over—what else?—gun control with fellow candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg in the aftermath of the debate, from which political fallout is still raining down on Democrats. |

Florida lawmakers returning to Tallahassee on Monday will confront mounting expectations that they do something about the wave of gun violence and summer of mass shootings across the country. Gun reform activists are organized and well-funded. Retailers are banning guns from stores and pulling ammo off shelves. Poll after poll shows Americans think it should be harder to buy a firearm and a majority think certain weapons, the ones most used in extreme acts of violence, should be banned outright. |

The Gewehr-Prufungskommission developed the 8mm Mauser in 1905, a cartridge also known as the 7.92x57mm Mauser. This cartridge was developed with the goal of improving upon and replacing the Patrone 88 or M88 cartridge, which was being used at the time. The 8mm Mauser has more than a century of active service in the military, and to this day it is still in reserve status in many countries. |

People who know me know my lifelong obsession with Jarts. If you’re younger than 40, you probably have no idea what those are.
They were — and are — the world’s best lawn game, consisting of two plastic rings placed 20 or so paces apart into which you lob Jarts, which are winged darts with a metal spear of death on the end.
A great example is Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
After six vaping deaths nationally, she announced a ban on the sale of flavored nicotine vaping products in the state.
But someone please explain to me why we can ban Jarts (one death) and flavored vape products (six deaths) and continue to do nothing about guns.
Yes, this is a gun control column. Deal with it.

Clio Area Schools is asking residents who live near one of the school buildings to limit shooting their guns.
This comes after the school had to put one of their buildings in lockdown because of gunshots in the area.
According to a news release, the shots were fired by a neighbor partaking in target practice.
A second incident took place when a property owner was shooting at a varmint that had attacked their dog.
The release from Clio Area Schools also states that the residents were well within their legal rights to shoot their guns, but in today’s climate, the buildings were forced into lockdown mode when the shots were heard, and that police had to be called because of it.

If you’re carrying a gun, the Publix supermarket chain doesn’t want to see it. Publix is joining a growing number of retailers in asking customers not to openly carry firearms in its stores, even if state laws allow it. The new policy comes a week after the competing Kroger grocery chain joined Walmart, Target and other companies in asking customers not to openly carry weapons in their stores. The policies don’t amount to outright prohibitions, in particular because stores generally haven’t said how their workers should deal with customers who don’t voluntarily follow the rules. |

Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously chided a debate opponent, “Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not to his own facts.” This would be a useful lesson for gun control advocates to learn. Every candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, for example, has echoed the familiar refrain that the number of mass shootings is on the rise and that more stringent federal laws regulating the sale of firearms will ameliorate the “crisis of gun violence.” The problem with these claims is that mass shootings are not increasing in frequency. Nor is there any objective evidence that new gun control laws would reduce their number. |

Any time a discussion that in any way touches on the subject of shot timers or timed drills comes up at the local gun store or on the intertubes, it’s a lead-pipe cinch that some kibitzer is going to chime in with “Oh, yeah? Well there ain’t no timer in a gunfight!” (To which my favorite retort is “No, but there is someone trying to kill you and they’re probably in a hurry.”) |

I understand that some of my Democratic friends cannot appreciate what self-defense means, but I will tell the tale anyway. Firearms are essential in a civil, safe society. Guns are only as safe as the person behind them. My tale is that of a family in a small western New Mexico town where a family of two little boys, a mother and a father lived in an ordinary home. |

Rep. Beto O'Rourke (D-TX) has made it very clear that he would have a mandatory confiscation of AR-15s in America as a means of addressing gun violence and mass shootings across the country. He said he didn't intend to have law enforcement knock on people's doors, demanding they hand over their firearms. He said he believes gun owners will follow the law (because, you know, gun owners are law-abiding citizens). But let's not forget that O'Rourke isn't the only one who wants firearm confiscation to become a reality. |

Liberals have traditionally opposed “corporate speech,” particularly when they saw businesses supporting conservative candidates and causes, and especially after the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling. “My, how times have changed,” writes Justin Danhof, Esq., director of the National Center’s Free Enterprise Project, in a new commentary published by The Federalist. Now that Walmart has decided to stop selling most guns and ammunition in the wake of the recent El Paso mass shooting, Justin notes that the big box retailer “is suddenly a corporate darling.” |

Lincoln gun owners would have to lock up firearms left unattended in their vehicles and report firearm thefts in the city within 48 hours under separate proposed ordinances. City Councilman Roy Christensen's proposal would replace an ordinance banning people from leaving an unattended gun in their vehicle for longer than 24 hours. Instead, his ordinance would require guns left in vehicles to be locked up inside a glove box, trunk, another compartment or a hardened storage container attached to the vehicle. |
