President Bush: I firmly believe in the right of an individual to bear arms, as granted by the Second Amendment. My administration filed a brief in the Supreme Court asserting that the Second Amendment protects an individual right to own firearms and is not limited to protecting state militias.
Kerry: Yes. As a hunter and a gun owner, I believe that law-abiding American adults have the right to own firearms. As President, I will defend the Second Amendment right of law-abiding American adults to own firearms.
KABA Note: Notice also that Bush states flatly, "...I support reauthorization of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, but I oppose additions to or expansion of the ban." Kerry supports said ban as well.
Notice also that Kerry claims the M-16 is his favorite weapon - the same one that supposedly saved his life during his military service. Yet, he would deny civilians the right to keep and bear the same firearm that allegedly saved him.

"More than 200 years ago, when America was little more than a collection of colonies on the edge of a vast continent, your predecessors resolved to fight for our independence. Many were young – not much older than children. They had nowhere near enough weapons or training or supplies. They were just ordinary citizens coming together to fight for the land they loved. And together, they defeated an empire."

"Federal government agencies have been ordered by a federal appeals court to release data on sales of firearms and tracing of firearms recovered by law enforcement." ...
"The data was sought by the City of Chicago for use in its lawsuit against gun manufacturers, distributors, and dealers for contributing to a public nuisance in Chicago by facilitating trafficking of large numbers of firearms into Chicago, where handguns have been illegal since 1982. By concealing the data, ATF is preventing the public from learning which firearms dealers have sold the most crime guns even though reports ATF has published have noted that just over one percent of dealers are linked to more than 57 percent of crime guns recovered nationwide and traced." |

"Hunting rifles and shotguns can be just as deadly as an AK-47. However, those weapons do not appear as ominous. In 1994, Diane Feinstein asked her staff to come up with a list of assault weapons to place on the banned list. They got their hands on a gun catalog and went through--picking out weapons that were black and those that had a militaristic appearance. None of course, were fully-automatic." ...

"The expiration of the assault weapons ban was a depressing but potentially valuable lesson in the rancid politics of gun control." "Honest debate on gun policy is impossible because of the cynical absolutism of the current leadership of the National Rifle Association, the Republican Party's dependence on this interest group's muscle, and the fear the NRA inspires among some Democrats."
"At a time when preventing terrorism is supposed to be a national priority, why can't our politicians agree to sustain a ban on a very narrow class of firearms? Is our national policy to do all we can to defeat the terrorists - except for those weapons that the NRA vetoes?"
------- Right. It's all the NRA's fault. Why can't these rabid extremists understand that we're only trying to violate their rights just a little bit?

"The 'ban,' as it was called, was hardly what most people think. Most of the banned guns remained in production and continued to be sold. ...Only the parts that made them look more military, things like muzzle flash suppressers, bayonet mounts, and folding stocks, were illegal. ..."
"People can again buy 'real' assault weapons. It's their right, the same as it's mine to have my old hunting shotgun and rifle. Rochester police are warning parents to beware of possible sexual assaults of young schoolgirls on their way to school.
Police are investigating five cases still open from previous years. No arrests have been made.
The attacks were on girls ages 12 to 18, as they walked to their bus stop early in the morning.
Police are asking parents to supervise their kids until they get to a bus stop or school. Also, be alert to anyone following kids, and to call 911 to report any suspicious persons or activity.
There have been no cases of sexual assault on school children so far this year.
------- This illustrates two things: 1) It's time for parents to stop being non-existent in their children's lives, and 2) the RPD openly admits that it's parents' responsibility to protect their children. They have no responsibility to protect children, just like they have no responsibility to protect the rest of us. |

"Not surprisingly, the New York City Council is in a dither over the sunset of the Assault Weapons Ban, and is riding to the rescue with its usual alacrity. Asserting that allowing the ban to expire is a slap in the face to New Yorkers -- who, incidentally, are still subject to New York State's own "assault weapons" ban -- Council Speaker Gifford Miller, Council Member David Yassky and Andrew Pelosi of the New Yorkers Against Gun Violence proposed legislation on September 12th that increases penalties for those who illegally sell or purchase firearms. The NYSRPA views this proposed legislation as merely the latest attempt by the Council to garner publicity by promoting legislation that has no effect on crime. It is absurd to think that criminals will pay any more attention to this new law than they already pay to the myriad gun laws on the books. The likely effect will be to penalize law-abiding gun owners who accidentally run afoul of the more obscure regulations." |

"McKeever devised the policy in reaction to a new state law prohibiting local jurisdictions from prohibiting the right of individuals to carry guns into public buildings. He said it was designed simply to clarify the intent of an individual who carries out that statutory right."

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53 |
