Two parents carried rifles while their daughter shouldered a BB gun. Others wore British Revolutionary War costumes to mock Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s coronavirus-prevention policies. And some Black Detroiters were there advocating for more diversity in the gun rights movement.
They were among about 1,000 demonstrators from across Michigan gathered on the State Capitol lawn Thursday in Lansing to support open-carry gun rights and protest a recent push to ban guns from the Capitol building.
While occasionally addressing other issues such as Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s stay-home measures, speakers at the Sep. 17 rally focused on the rights of protesters, many of whom carrying pistols and rifles out in the open. |

A Nelson County grand jury declined to indict the man who stabbed Jamie Keene to death in April.
The grand jury heard testimony for more than six hours and from at least seven witnesses, including the victim’s mother, an expert engineer hired by the Keene family and the 18-year-old man who stabbed him in what a police investigation indicated was a dispute over a woman. |

He asserted that the Second Amendment has always been understood to protect the right to bear firearms for the lawful purpose of self-defense. Inherent in that right, of course, is the right to bear operable arms. That is, the Second Amendment protects those components “required to make a protected firearm work for self-defense.” As Judge Matey explained, a magazine is “a device that holds cartridges or ammunition,” and ammunition is clearly required to make a firearm work. Magazines therefore fall within the protection of the Second Amendment. |

Experts warn that Trump’s embrace of Rittenhouse, who sat in the front row at a Trump rally in January and was in Kenosha as part of a rightwing militia nominally there to protect property, could pave the way for more vigilantism in Trump’s name – and have catastrophically violent results come November.
“Trump has made the election about the idea of citizen paramilitaries, federal forces and the government administration, against looters, rioters, demonstrators and Democrats,” said Joe Lowndes, professor of political science at the University of Oregon. |

Calculating how many checks were likely associated with actual gun sales, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) estimated an impressive 1,684,083 checks — a 51.2% increase over the same month in 2019. And anybody who thinks sales don’t also represent a hike in the number of new gun owners, just refer to last week’s Insider Online entry, where the NSSF estimated some 5 million newbies in the neighborhood. |

Mai asked for an en banc review of his case. En banc reviews of Second Amendment cases seem to be routine for the Ninth Circuit, when the cases favor protecting Second Amendment rights.
This case, which had already ruled against Second Amendment protections, was, unsurprisingly, not granted an en banc review.
The surprising and positive event was eight judges dissented from the majority and believed an en banc review was called for. They dissented so strongly, they wrote and/or signed onto an extremely well argued, 29-page dissent.
The dissent is a powerful defense of the exercise of Second Amendment rights, and of Constitutional limitation of government power. |

About 40% of Americans say they or someone in their household owns a gun, and 22% of individuals (about 72 million people) report owning a gun, according to surveys from Pew and Harvard and Northeastern. This figure has declined over time, down from 51% of gun-owning households in 1978. Gun purchases, however, have hit historic highs in recent years and during the COVID-19 pandemic. |

State law arbitrarily “obliterates” the constitutional rights of 18- to 20-year-old Floridians, attorneys for the National Rifle Association argue in their latest brief in a federal lawsuit challenging the Florida Legislature’s post-Parkland gun-control bill.
NRA lawyers and attorneys for the state filed dueling briefs earlier this month with Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker. Both sides also submitted motions for summary judgment to avoid going to trial Jan. 11. Walker rejected a similar motion from the state in May. |

It seems that on many fronts, the American establishment right has been incapable of halting the advance of the left. There is one bright spot, however: more Americans are resisting encroachments against their right to self-defense by exercising their Second Amendment rights.
Gun stores have had 10.3 million firearms sales so far this year, according to a survey from the National Shooting Sports Foundation—a record for the period observed. Sales have surged by 95 percent when compared with the same timeframe in 2019. |

We all know how important it is to invest in a quality self-defense gun, but it’s also important to invest in quality personal-defense ammunition, too. There are many companies producing high-quality self-defense ammunition today, but two industry giants are producing some of the best defensive loads on the market: Federal Premium and Speer Ammo. |

Outside of Judge Ron White’s courtroom Thursday, Ancheta’s defense attorney Elder Granger II said of the jury’s verdict, “I think they got it right. Mr. Ancheta had a gun pointed at him within three second of an officer getting out of an unmarked vehicle. How was he supposed to know it was a police officer? How did he know he was not going to be murdered?”
During the course of the trial it had been revealed that Ancheta was not only wanted by police, but also by others. Two days before the Fas Fuel incident, Ancheta was shot in the leg by an unknown gunman. Prior to that shooting, Ancheta’s mother’s home and a friend’s home were shot up with bullets that Granger said were meant for his client. |
