"Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) is calling on members and supporters living in the New Orleans metropolitan area who have had firearms confiscated by police, federal officers or National Guard units to contact SAF headquarters at once."

"Over the past three weeks, since the New Orleans and surrounding area was devastated by Hurricane Katrina, there have been disturbing reports about warrantless searches and seizures of privately-owned firearms."

"'SAF, in cooperation with the National Rifle Association, has investigators on the ground and has retained legal counsel in preparation for possible action,' said SAF founder Alan M. Gottlieb."

"SAF wants to speak directly with individuals who have actually had their firearms confiscated. ..." ...

"Supreme Court nominee John Roberts, in response to questioning from Senator Russ Feingold (D-Wis.) about the Second Amendment, gave a completely distorted picture of the state of Second Amendment law." ...

"'This is very disturbing testimony from Judge Roberts,' commented Dennis Henigan, Director of the Brady Center’s Legal Action Project. 'His answers on the Second Amendment issue faithfully echo the 'spin' on the case law typically given by the NRA and others who seek to use the Constitution as a weapon against reasonable gun laws. Those who believe that Congress, and the states, should have broad power to protect our Nation from the epidemic of gun violence now have reason to be worried about Judge Roberts.'" ...

"Gun law expert John Michael Snyder believes both the terrorism perpetrated by Al Qaeda and the civil disorder following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina underscore the vital importance of the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms."

"'Our present national situation demonstrates just why the Second Amendment is so terribly important in this day and age,' Snyder says. '... So who in this crisis guards Americans’ homes and, in fact, Americans’ lives, but Americans ourselves? And how can that be done against violent criminals without the presence of guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens who know how to use them?'" ...

Steven M. Lelli, 37, of South Elgin was dismissed Thursday, Sauers said.

Lelli was arrested Sept. 10 at a marina and RV park near Antioch after allegedly pulling his wife's hair during an argument. Authorities say Lelli reached for his loaded gun as officers tried to arrest him.

A man who answered Lelli's home phone Friday said Lelli had no comment.

Lelli joined the Bull Valley Police Department in suburban McHenry County in 2001. He was free on bail.
