Why not ban guns altogether? Some would argue that they are useful for self-defence, hunting and as collector's items. These arguments come from the minority, and as shown by the recent Ontario smoking ban, the minority does not matter when the health of the public is at stake. It is clear that public safety would be increased dramatically if guns were banned and the law to do so is past due.

I have no objection to private gun ownership. I had issues with the concealed weapons law in Michigan, but have been proven wrong on the dangers I thought the new law would exacerbate. But I stand firm in the belief that the founding fathers never meant for gun ownership to be a personal right.

Mario Etheridge, 28, of Detroit, is on trial in Wayne County Circuit Court on one count of carrying a concealed weapon and one count of discharging a firearm inside an occupied building.

He is not on trial for homicide.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy declined to pursue murder charges against Etheridge saying that he had acted in self-defense on April 11 when he shot the rapper after he shot Etheridge’s cousin inside the club.

Ed Note: Apparently, in MI, killing someone in self-defense isn't homicide, but if you do it inside, and use a concealed gun, you're still going to jail for almost a decade. Seems like the MI legislature needs to add some common sense to the law.

The luncheon was one of several South Carolina stops the potential presidential contender planned for Monday and Tuesday, which is when he will raise money for Karen Floyd, the GOP nominee for state education superintendent. Gov. since 1996, Huckabee said he will wait until after he leaves office in January to decide whether to run for president in 2008.

Responding to an audience question, the avid sportsman said he would support a national "right to carry" bill that would require states to recognize concealed weapons permits issued by other states.

With the gun control movement running for the hills nationwide, opponents of the Second Amendment have taken comfort in the fact that many of America's largest cities remain solidly in the anti-gun camp. In such places, it's not uncommon for local government officials to initiate so-called gun buyback programs where police purchase weapons citizens bring in, no questions asked.

Esther Erickson pressed her face against the stock of her shotgun, and put her finger on the trigger. "Pull!" she yelled. An orange clay target soared over the field in front of her. Erickson fired, as her target hovered for an instant. She hit it with apparent ease and it exploded into tiny fluorescent pieces, almost like a miniature fireworks display. The booming noise of her shot reverberated as she rested her 12-gauge shotgun on the ground and waited for others to take their turns. "This really is just for fun," she said later as she took a break from shooting. The Ashburnham woman is one of a growing number of women learning how to shoot.

A 70-year old Jew is being charged with "hooliganism" after shooting an attacker in self-defense, according to a September 7, 2006 report in the national daily Moskovsky Komsomolets. Anatoly Vaysman, a journalist at the “Behind the Wheel” magazine, reportedly got out of his car near a Moscow store in January 2005 when he heard someone shouting at him “Stop, you kike!” He turned to see a middle aged man charging at him. The man allegedly gave him a hard shove to the chest and then reached into his pocket, possibly for a weapon. Mr. Vaysman then shot his assailant with a gas-powered pistol (a non-lethal weapon commonly used in Russia for self-defense).

Columnist, Talkradio Pundit and Author John Longenecker is releasing his Second Edition of Transfer Of Wealth -- The Case For Nationwide Concealed Carry in both paperback and hardcover. As always, Longenecker writes about liberty and sovereignty for the non-gun owner household. "I'm asked: where are the threats to our homes?" Longenecker says. On the subject of household preparedness, Longenecker asserts that though every home probably prepares for dental care, illness, unemployment and more, just how the household will manage or even survive an encounter with violent crime is the most neglected area of household management. The solution: to MAKE IT part of your household management.

Two powerful Chicago aldermen are proposing a gun offender registry that would allow the city's police to track people convicted of weapons violations. The ordinance proposed by Aldermen Ed Burke and Isaac Carothers would require offenders to check in with police every six months. Unlike sex offender registries, the information would be available only to police and not to the public.

Sarah Brady of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, issued the following statement on the passing of former Texas Governor Ann Richards: "I was lucky enough to develop a friendship with Ann Richards, who helped us a great deal when we were working to pass the Brady Law. She was a plucky, funny, larger-than-life lady who was as smart as a whip. And she was amazing to have in your corner in a good fight."

The end of April saw collectors of antique arms shelling out over $7 million in New Hampshire and $5 million in Illinois at two auctions. Record prices were set at both sales. Each auction used a different strategy and format. Greg Martin chose a single-day sale on April 24. It featured about 800 high-end items from a Texan's collection and 78 lots of valuable knives from an Oregon collection. Patrick Hogan of Rock Island prefers a bigger production. From April 29 to May 1 he presented nearly 3000 lots of mostly guns in all shapes, sizes, and values. Hogan sells primarily unreserved, and Martin doesn't. Hogan charges a 15% buyer's premium; Martin charges 13½%.

Wyoming's legal challenge against the federal government could serve as a national test case on whether people convicted of domestic violence can expunge their records and regain their right to own guns. In a lawsuit that has attracted support from national gun groups, Wyoming in May sued the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. U.S. District Judge Alan Johnson is scheduled to hear arguments in the case on Oct. 6 in Cheyenne. The state is asking Johnson to rule that the ATF acted illegally when it threatened to disallow the use of the approximately 11,000 concealed weapons permits the state has issued to its citizens as a substitute for federal background checks for firearms purchases.

The 'guns for all' mentality embraced--and repeatedly acted upon--by the U.S. House may have hit a snag earlier this month. It seems that Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) may have finally identified the one segment of gun owners that even the National Rifle Association and its Congressional supporters are unwilling to fight for--at least not publicly.

I think the idea of carrying a single action for defense purposes--with the exception of as a law enforcement duty sidearm--is acceptable. I tend to like simplicity, and the time-honored and proven sixgun fits that bill. Many exhaustive experiments have been conducted regarding the carrying of various configurations of handguns for defense purposes, and disadvantages have been discovered lingering within each. I believe personal penchant should still be the deciding factor when it comes to defense carry.

"We're telling the four steps when they see a gun: stop, don't touch, get away and tell an adult," Mr. Kramer said. "It's very simple, but so many kids are killed by guns unnecessarily when they get curious."

The volunteers were also giving parents gun locks and informing them to keep guns out of reach.

"We teach responsibility," he said. "There is such a mystique about guns with children and we're trying to break that. So many people don't talk at all about guns. Our goal is to have no more kids killed by guns."

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
The right of the citizens to keep and bear arms has justly been considered, as the palladium of the liberties of a republic; since it offers a strong moral check against the usurpation and arbitrary power of rulers; and will generally, even if these are successful in the first instance, enable the people to resist and triumph over them. — Joseph Story, Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States; With a Preliminary Review of the Constitutional History of the Colonies and States before the Adoption of the Constitution [Boston, 1833].
