Jonathan Fischer is never sure who's going to be more surprised when he, as he likes to put it, comes out of the gun closet — the gun aficionados who find out he's gay or the gay friends who find out he likes shooting guns. When the 38-year-old television editor showed up last month to a defensive handgun class near Piru with a Glock 27 pistol on his hip, he wore a T-shirt sporting a rainbow-colored AK-47. His "gay-K-47," he said. |

A Michigan man who can't buy a gun because he was briefly treated for mental health problems in the 1980s has won a key decision from a federal appeals court, which says the burden is on the government to justify a lifetime ban against him. The Second Amendment case was significant enough for 16 judges on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to participate. Cases usually are heard only by three-judge panels. |

No folderol or embroidery this week, folks: We put three vastly popular single-stack, striker-fired, polymer-framed 9 mm carry pistols through our ringer—and our subsequent results in one spot. If you’re cogitating an M&P Shield, M&P Performance Center Shield or Glock 43, we hope it helps. We’re reshooting them for “First Gear,” having reviewed them before. But our bloom-is-off-the-rose, side-by-side brawl had a few surprises nonetheless. Feature by feature, here’s our take. |

The tragic gun problem in Chicago and other cities is complex. There is not one simple solution and many approaches will need to be employed before a significant reduction in the number of homicides occurs. One angle could involve changing the general perception of the use of guns as a way to settle problems. As an example, consider the way that the public opinion of smoking changed over (a relatively short) time due to a concerted effort to change the image of smokers. Rather than being “cool,” smoking came to be seen as a foolish behavior, and the number of smokers has dropped greatly.

Former Rep. Gabby Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband Mark Kelly lashed out at Donald Trump on Friday for saying that Hillary Clinton’s bodyguards should be “disarmed.” “Tonight we have even more evidence of just how dangerously unfit Donald Trump is to be president of this great country,” Giffords and Kelly, both Clinton supporters, said in a statement. "He is reckless, irresponsible and unworthy of the office he seeks.” |

Usually, an individual person does not inspire a member of Congress to propose federal legislation. But when Marti Priest called the office of U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison with a gripe, that is exactly what happened. Priest, who lives outside of Ellison’s Minneapolis congressional district in a Twin Cities suburb, was irked when her college-age son told her that the University of Kansas eventually will allow students to carry concealed weapons on campus. Priest is from Kansas herself. She attended KU and her mother is buried in Topeka.

All Jim Cooley wants to do is buy some soda.
"You want to come to Walmart?" he asks his wife.
"No," Maria says.
"Pretty please?" Jim asks.
"I'm not going to sit there and have the police called on you. I mean, I don't want to see that crap," Maria says, knowing what a trip to Walmart means. |

In just a few days I will reach my 50th birthday. I guess that qualifies me as one of the old men in camp. Seems like yesterday, I was the young kid in camp quietly fixated on the stories and wisdom of the older gentlemen of camp. |

QUOTES
TO REMEMBER |
These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of men and women. — Thomas Paine, The Crisis, Intro. (Dec. 1776). |
