"Confident that Republicans will not extend the assault-weapons ban, gun manufacturers are gearing up to meet a big anticipated demand for the weapons later this month." ...

"Gun makers say they will be ready for an expected crush of demand, pointing out that many of their customers will be celebrating on Sept. 14. The sale of assault weapons to law enforcement and military officials is legal. Production of parts has been stepped up in anticipation of the ban’s expiration." ...

"Jon Sauers, a federally licensed gun dealer in Philadelphia, Pa., has agreed to pay $850,000 to a woman whose 7-year-old son was killed with a gun the dealer sold to a straw buyer ..." ...

"According to court records, Sauers, owner of Sauers Trading, sold 10 handguns between 1994 and 1997 to Perry Bruce, who resold them illegally. ..."

"During his testimony, Sauers said he followed state and federal laws in all of the sales to Bruce. However, he acknowledged that he never questioned Bruce as to why he bought the 10 handguns. 'I don't know what my reason would be to ask him,' Sauers said. 'I didn't think it was any of my business.'" ...

Poster's Note: When will car dealers be required to be psychologists, too?

KABA Note: In the last 18 months (since becoming involved in the RKABA movement) I personally have purchased 8 handguns (for my own use) and I plan to buy at least one more in the next 6 months. Mr. Sauers is right, it isn't any of my dealer's business why I bought them.

"To the non-hunter, the fine art of the fair chase is perhaps inexplicable."

"Leave for a moment, if you will, the finality of the successful hunt. For it is, very decidedly, an act of finality when the trigger is pulled. But there is so very much more involved..."

"Invariably when the hunt is mentioned — any kind of hunt — my thoughts immediately go to a particular gun. It is discussed and described at length in Rabbit Stompin’, and resides among my earliest and fondest memories. Standing next to a thousand others, I can pick it right out. Such is one of the sublime subtleties of the hunt: the lines, the heft, the allure of a certain firearm, especially as opposed to others supposed to mimic it." ...

"Zeroing a rifle, getting it to deliver a bullet precisely where you want, can be challenging--especially when the caliber is a shoulder thumper like the ultra mag. Some describe such guns as firearms that'll hurt you on both ends."

"Last night, First Lady Laura Bush said that her husband, George W. Bush, will 'always tell you what he really thinks.' The ban on military-style semiautomatic assault weapons expires at midnight on September 13."

"The parents of the children who have died at the hands of killers armed with these weapons remember candidate George W. Bush telling them that he really thought the ban should be renewed. Police all over America, who face a new wave of killers outfitted with 30, 50 or even 100-round ammunition clips, remember what he said, too. About 50 officers have died from assault weapons fire in the past six years alone." ...

"Common sense prevailed in rural northeast Clark County on Monday when law enforcement authorities made this decision: Marvin Buckbee might be guilty of an illegal backyard burn, but no more than that, so let's not allow this situation to devolve into something really expensive or tragic."

"With that, some 15 officers, an armored SWAT team vehicle and two fire marshals departed, leaving Buckbee in his barn with his 22-caliber rifle, which he had held but not fired or pointed at anyone. He will be sent a citation."

"'Once we got up there and were able to determine that all we had was a simple (illegal) burn, with no overt threats made, we chose to just back off,' said Clark County Sheriff's Sgt. Craig Hogman. 'It wasn't worth a confrontation. I think we acted appropriately.'"

"As they planned his funeral, those who knew Mike Waleskowski said they never could have imagined that he would have killed his family -- and then himself."

"But, psychologists said, as irrational an act as it may have seemed, suicide among police officers is more common than most people know. And, they said, in Waleskowski's mind, he was trying to save himself and his family from what he believed would have been terrible shame after he was suspended from his job as a Waterford police officer." ...

"Waleskowski, who was caught on a surveillance camera allegedly taking about $500 from an arrested suspect's wallet, was confronted in the middle of his shift that started at 9 p.m. Saturday and sent to his Waterford home at 3:30 a.m. Sunday."

A tragedy that merely affirms that cops are not "super-citizens" as Sarah Brady would have us believe, and burdening them with this label probably has something to do with their relatively high suicide and familicide rates.

PO1 Benedict Mamaril of the police Special Action Force, in a drunken stupor, went on a shooting rampage in his hometown in Malasiqui, Pangasinan, last year.

He shot with his M-16 rifle two boys aged 12 and 16 who were bringing a cow to market. Luckily, Mamaril missed, but the cow lay dead after the rampage.

My program, "Isumbong mo kay Tulfo," helped the families of the two boys file an administrative complaint with the Internal Affairs Office (IAS) in Pangasinan.

You know the punishment meted out on the abusive cop? Only a month-long suspension! The offense would have merited his dismissal from the service without prejudice to the criminal case in court.

The decision is outrageous!
