"It's not just corrupt Mexican officials and drug cartels benefiting from U.S. government-supplied and approved weapons exports. Michael Crowley's 'Outrageous: Friends Like These' in the September issue of Readers Digest (posted online as 'American Weapons in the Hands of the Taliban') shows the same thing happening on the other side of the globe."

"How?"

"Our allies in Pakistan and Afghanistan are using our money to pad their pockets—or worse, giving it to terrorists."

"But what about weapons?"

"A check of 30 magazines taken from the dead insurgents' rifles found that at least 17 held ammunition that bore the distinctive factory stamps of U.S. suppliers..." ...

A right vs. a Right?

"I’ve been pondering this question about a healthcare 'right' and how to better understand it. GOA and JPFO have done a good job of explaining the threat to gun rights if the government should run the healthcare industry. I'm sure I'm not the first guy to think of it this way: If healthcare is a 'right' and the government is obligated to provide or enforce this 'right', then why is the government not providing for, or enforcing upon each of us the right to keep and bear arms? (An answer later)"

"If we have Miranda rights (right to an attorney …), why can't the same be said for the 2nd Amendment? ... I turned of age 20 years ago and I'm still waiting for my battle rifle from Uncle Sam." ...

"A remarkable ruling by the North Carolina Supreme Court has held that a state statute barring convicted felons from possessing firearms for life is unconstitutional, thus raising a question among legal scholars, gun rights activists and gun prohibitionists: Should convicted felons ever be allowed by law to regain their constitutional right to keep and bear arms?" ...

"This case does raise a question: Should convicted felons ever be allowed to own firearms?"

"At what point would a felon’s right to own a firearm be considered for restoration?" ...

"The North Carolina Supreme Court has ruled that Barney Britt, who was convicted of selling Quaalude pills in 1979, could have his gun rights restored."

"In 1987, Britt petitioned the court for restoration of his rights after keeping his record clean for eight years and his petition was granted. In 2004, despite no further infractions on his part, he lost those rights again in the wake of a new, tougher state law regarding ex-felons. Britt again went to court and after a four-year battle successfully argued that the new law is too broad and has no allowances for restoration of rights for non-felons, a process that exists in many states."

"Gun control advocates fear this could open the door for violent felons to be allowed to have guns, yet this has not been a problem in any of the many states, including Ohio, where such a process exists." ...

"The Supreme Court ... declared that Washington's 32-year ban on all functional firearms violated the Second Amendment. Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion, however, applied only to possession of guns in the home. The court did not address, and was not asked to address, firearms carried outside the home. That's the issue posed in a new lawsuit against the District by Tom Palmer ... and four other plaintiffs — represented by Alan Gura, the lawyer who successfully argued Heller before the court."

"... D.C. law still states that '[n]o person shall carry within the District of Columbia ... a pistol, without a license.' Currently, the city affords no process by which to issue such a license. ..." ...

... "... Under current law, there is no automatic basis to prohibit a person from possessing a firearm because they appear on the terrorist watch list. Instead, there must be an independent disqualifying factor — such as a felony conviction or an illegal alien status."

"This is the 'terror gap' — where individuals on the terrorist watch list can be stopped from boarding planes but cannot be prevented from purchasing firearms. It in part prompted Sen. Frank Lautenberg to re-introduce legislation to prohibit the sale or distribution of firearms or explosives to individuals whom the Attorney General determines are engaged in terrorist activities a parallel bill was introduced in the House by Republican Peter King)." ...

"In an August 31 editorial, the editors of the USA Today have entered the debate over the presence of firearms at political protests with a seemingly-reasonable point of view: Use common sense. In the words of the editorial: 'Carrying guns openly outside presidential events may be legal in many states, but it sure isn't smart.'"

"Undeniably, many staunch defenders of the constitutional right to keep and bear arms cringed at the decision of some gun rights activists to openly carry guns to anti-Obama protests. ..."

"However, one area where the USA Today editorial falls woefully short is in confronting the way in which various media outlets have grossly distorted the fact concerning the presence of guns at various rallies. ..." ...

"The countywide middle school cross country meet for Bowie Nature Park was nearly cancelled after the city commission chose not to 'opt out' of the new state law. That law and the city’s decision to uphold it is in direct conflict with a law banning firearms from schools and school activities – including those activities that take place off of school grounds." ...

And while many are passing the opt-out clause and prohibiting guns in public places, they are facing the ire of many residents who believe the law is infringing in their individual right to bear arms ..."

"Did the framers of our constitution intend for anyone and everyone to be able to carry a gun anywhere, anytime? Or is that amendment specifically talking about militia – and the right of the people to defend their selves from invasion or tyranny?"

Submitter's Note: But it is "a simple issue". Gun bans in public spaces violate individual civil rights just as much as "No Blacks" signs did.

Although the number of signs has definitely decreased in the five years since the successful self-defense law was passed, far too many businesses - especially in urban areas - still post signs telling some of their customers that they are not welcome."
