"A Tampa police officer is under investigation after he inadvertently left his loaded 9 mm handgun on the roof of a patrol car last week and drove off."

"A fairly new cooperative effort between federal and county prosecutors is helping make sure gun-wielding criminals get the stiffest penalties allowed under law. State leaders hope that with time, Project Safe Neighborhoods will bring a reduction in gun-related violence."

"That has happened in other states. In Richmond, Va., a 30 percent reduction in gun homicides was seen when a similar program was introduced, said Jan Sharp, criminal chief for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Omaha."

The Guns of Zimbabwe

"I recently sat under a colorful tent with Ed Kadzombe, the chairman of the Zimbabwe Wildlife Advisory Council. We were surrounded by photos of lions, leopards, and elephants, as well as hand-woven baskets and other artifacts — such as statues of black rhinos, sacred animals to the people of Zimbabwe. Kadzombe told me he wants to spread the word that his people are managing the Zimbabwe resource 'for the good of all.' "

"

In an era when politically correct pundits challenge that hunting has anything to do with conservation, Kadzombe has his work cut out for him. But the cold facts on hunting in Africa tell the real story. You may have heard various eco-groups grabbing headlines with the claim that African elephants are endangered. Well, that depends on just where you are talking about. In l980, Zimbabwe had 40,000 elephants. Today, after 22 years of carefully regulated hunting, they have 88,000 pachyderms. How can this be so?"

"The Media Research Center recently reported that over a two-year period antigun stories outnumbered pro-gun stories by a ratio of nearly 10 to 1 — even though some 35 million people in the U.S. enjoy shooting firearms. So, it's unlikely you're gonna read many stories describing how tourism and hunting are stabilizing forces in the turbulent country of Zimbabwe. But it's a story that Ed Kadzombe has the facts to back up."

"My shotgun-toting 13-year-old and the French exchange student had been tromping around the wet woods in search of spruce grouse or hooters, but after the third pile of fresh bear poop and the sound of a distant moose hunter's rifle, they decide to come back. They still have ammunition, so they wrap a bunch of pine cones in duct tape and have their little sisters toss them in the air so they can shoot at them."

"They wanted to murder me," the victim said Wednesday. "After I did what they asked me to do. I'm glad to be alive. I'm glad to still be here. To see my son."

In Sarah Bradyland, this guy would be dead. Had he followed the usual police suggestion that you "don't resist, and do what they tell you," he would be dead. Then there's this:

"Police Chief Joe Mokwa said Wednesday that the city has seen 98 cases of auto theft involving a gun over the past six months." -- in Missouri, where concealed carry by lawful people is virtually banned and where some police organizations have opposed reforms

"That news is the result of an overwhelming 87-6 vote in the U.S. Senate to allow commercial pilots to carry firearms in the cockpit. The vote came after the Bush administration dropped its official opposition to the idea. Even anti-gun senators such as California’s Barbara Boxer voted for it."

"I'm not anti-gun; in fact, I own two handguns: a 9mm and .22-caliber Smith & Wesson. The idea of guns as protection came naturally to me; my dad kept a pistol in a bedside drawer. I used to shoot at a range."

"But my guns have been locked up for the last eight years. I no longer think guns make me safer, and the rash of deaths in my city has made me look at them in a whole new light."

"A controversial study by Arthur Kellerman concluded that a handgun at home is up to 43 times more likely to kill the owner, a family member or friend than it is an intruder. The study is a little misleading, because, for one, it includes suicides. Even so, for most people, a gun is more likely to cause trouble than to stop it."

"Schmidt, 36, who was led through the lobby of the Medina County Jail in handcuffs, refused to comment on his arrest and indictment."

"Medina County Common Pleas Judge James L. Kimbler signed a court order allowing Schmidt to be released if he posts $15,000 of a $150,000 bond."

"Lafayette Township trustees suspended Schmidt with pay in July when a township woman alleged that Schmidt raped her that month at her home while he was on the job as chief."

"Schmidt has been Lafayette's police chief for about 2½ years. He was a patrolman and sergeant for the Lodi Police Department for nine years."

"The rape charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail and a $20,000 fine. The other two charges carry maximum prison terms of 18 months and $5,000 fines. Each offense also carries a firearms specifications that can carry mandatory one-year prison sentences."

If convicted, his time in prison carries opportunities to find out what rape is like -- from the other side of the equation.

"Steve Young, National President of the Fraternal Order of Police, took issue with Senator Edward M. Kennedy's (D-Mass.) opposition to the F.O.P.'s top priority, S. 2480, the 'Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act.' " [click link above]

The so-called "Law Enforcement Officers' Safety Act" is a national concealed carry bill that would grant law enforcement officers exemption from the concealed carry prohibitions in all 50 states -- while those laws continue to be enforced against The People who happen to be mentioned in "the right of the people to keep and bear arms."

[The senate version -- S. 2480 -- can be found by clicking here. Its mirror image counterpart -- H.R. 218 -- can be found by clicking here.]

In his "Cops Deserve Extra Rights" press release, Mr. Young proves himself to be dishonest, by saying,
"This isn't a controversial bill to anyone but Sen. Kennedy."
Meanwhile, numerous gun rights groups and leaders publicly oppose any legislation that accomplishes the same objective. And there are law enforcement groups that oppose the legislation, as well. Included in those groups are:
Police Executive Research Forum
International Association of Chiefs of Police
• There are others, and Mr. Young would have us believe he doesn't know it? Hogwash!
It's enlightening to see the leader of perhaps the largest police organization in America telling lies in public in support of an unconstitutional piece of legislation that slaps gunowners in the face.

What's next, Steve -- are you going to tell us that gun rights groups support your bill, too?
