"Imagine yourself walking down a street where everyone is carrying a concealed weapon. Now every argument, fight or domestic disturbance has the potential for massive bloodshed. Hurrah!"

Imagine the paranoia! Is there massive bloodshed in the streets of the other 35 states that allow concealed carry? No, but there IS massive bloodshed in the streets where the populace is completely disarmed.

"The candidates also were asked a series of rapid-fire questions including one on gun ownership. Both McClintock and Bustamante said they own guns."

"McClintock, a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment, said he bought a shotgun about 10 years ago when he and his family received death threats."

"Bustamante said he owns a deer-hunting rifle but has not gone hunting for a long time."

-------
"Deer hunting rifle" is code for "not a (mythical) assault weapon"! Bustamante proves his ignorance of firearms, McClintock proves the opposite.

"...Cops need to be free to do real cop work, not pursuing the malicious prosecutions of out-of-control prosecutors. The Michigan Court of Appeals majority also exhibited (by referring to non-applicable federal law) the same kind of cavalier view of their oath of office that has infected, by their own admission, four of the justices on the U.S. Supreme Court (Ginsburg, Breyer, Souter and O'Connor). These judges have on one or two recent decisions enthused about the foreign laws they referred to in coming to their decision. All of these judges have violated their oaths of office by looking for legal precedents in codes that are foreign to their respective jurisdictions. Their admissions should be the grounds for immediate impeachment."

"The combustible Philadelphia mayor's race heated up again this week, with the challenger's wife accusing a mayoral supporter of brandishing a gun and telling the candidate, 'You're going down.' "

" 'I don't even own a gun,' said Mike Fera, a hefty local union president at the center of the latest charge. The item in question, he said, must have been the cell phone he wears on his belt."

"If someone broke into my house at night, I would have to hit him with a toaster," Fera said.

About 1.7 percent of potential gun purchases were blocked last year by the nation's background check system, slightly below the 2001 level, according to new Justice Department figures.

About half of the 2002 rejections by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System were for people who were convicted felons or who had been indicted for a felony. Another 14 percent were blocked because of a domestic violence conviction or restraining order.

All told, about 136,000 of the 7.8 million background checks were rejected in 2001, the Bureau of Justice Statistics said in a report released Wednesday. That compares with 151,000 rejections out of 7.9 million checks in 2001, a rate of 1.9 percent.

"A new federal law requires all states to identify their most dangerous schools, those beset by problems with violence, but Montana education officials say there are none."

"The mandate to point out the dangerous schools to the public is part of the No Child Left Behind Act, passed by Congress last year and designed to improve education and make schools more accountable."

"But Montana education leaders, who have complained the law uses a one-size-fits-all approach to education, said that same criticism applies to the effort to label certain schools as 'persistently dangerous.' They predict it will have little effect in a rural state like Montana with relatively few incidents of school violence or serious discipline problems."

"It would take a journalist bolder than I to feign mastery of the regression analyses that the disputants have flung at each other. But a new article by Tomislav Kovandzic of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Thomas Marvell of Justec Research, published in the journal Criminology and Public Policy, offers further grounds for skepticism about the more-guns-less-crime theory."

"They looked closely at Florida's experience and found that its law 'had no measurable effect, for good or ill, on violence rates.' Supporters of the law can't exactly dismiss their research as liberal propaganda: It comes with the endorsement of Florida State criminologist Gary Kleck--whose research on firearms use has been widely cited to discredit gun control. In light of this study, says Kleck, 'I wouldn't expect any effect' from the new Missouri law."

"That may be bad news for gun rights groups. But it's not exactly a great boon to gun-control zealots, either. If there had been an epidemic of concealed handgun permit holders blasting away at each other over parking spaces, we would have heard about it. In fact, all evidence indicates that almost all the people who obtain these licenses are responsible and law-abiding." ...

"Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov must be a name most Mozambiqans hate. His invention, the AK47 rifle, is responsible for the deaths of up to one million people in a civil war that pitted the fighting groups Frelimo and Renamo against each other." ...

"But one man has found a redeeming way for turning the AK47 and the other killing and maiming devices like landmines. Visiting Mozambiqan artist Feil dos Santos' display of sculpture in the ongoing exhibition From Weapons To Art at the Afriart Gallery at the UMA Show grounds in Lugogo is a show of a man coming to terms with a trying time in his country's history and his own life."

-------
Notice the blatant personification of the rifle as being responsible for the carnage.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
We'll take one step at a time, and the first is necessarily - given the political realities - very modest. We'll have to start working again to strengthen the law, and then again to strengthen the next law and again and again. Our ultimate goal, total control of handguns, is going to take time. The first problem is to slow down production and sales. Next is to get registration. The final problem is to make possession of all handguns and ammunition (with a few exceptions) totally illegal. — Pete Shields, founder of Handgun Control, Inc., New Yorker Magazine, June 26, 1976, pg. 53
