"It would be a hopeful sign if the Senate could get away from its obsession with abortion on demand and consider, during its Supreme Court confirmation hearings, what the Constitution is and what it isn't."

"Some people seem to be under the erroneous belief that the Constitution grants us our rights. It does no such thing. To understand the Constitution, you have to remember the Declaration of Independence, which preceded it by several years. It is the Declaration that contains the philosophy of the American Revolution. The Constitution merely implements that philosophy." ...

"As New Orleans flooded and whatever civil society the city could lay claim to disintegrated, those left behind needed two things: a powerful will to survive and a gun."

"Hurricane Katrina might end up being the best friend the Second Amendment ever had."

"Gun dealers across the country are reporting increased sales. People who saw on television what happens when government can't deliver on the promise of protecting its citizens are buying firearms as an insurance policy against anarchy."

"That assurance of government-provided security has convinced individual Americans to gradually trade in their unrestrained constitutional right to bear arms." ...

"Last December, five members of San Francisco's board of supervisors submitted to the Department of Elections a proposed law that would ban the possession of handguns and the sale, manufacture and transfer of all firearms and ammunition in the city and county of San Francisco. The proposal has been placed on the November 8 special election ballot."

"If a simple majority of voters approves Proposition H on that day, the ban will take effect on Jan. 1, 2006."

"After that, San Francisco gun owners will have 90 days to surrender their firearms to authorities. Since all handgun sales are now registered in California, confiscation of firearms from honest, peaceable citizens will presumably begin sometime soon after that." ...

"News reports and litigious developments have called into question the safety of a major stun gun manufacturer’s product, and human rights groups continue to ask tough questions. FULL TEXT BELOW:

Gun control advocates want to stop Michigan legislators from passing a law allowing people to use deadly force to defend themselves without fear of prosecution.

The bills were introduced this month in Michigan.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and the Million Mom March are calling lawmakers in an attempt to keep the bills from getting out of the House Judiciary Committee.

The battle in Michigan over the so-called deadly force legislation is an important one for both sides.

It could open the doors to similar laws across the country, a top priority for the National Rifle Association, or stop the effort in its tracks.

"THE last thing Michigan needs is a deadly force law that would free more gun-owners to shoot first and ask questions later." ...

"But Carolynne Jarvis, of the Michigan Partnership to Prevent Gun Violence, feels somewhat betrayed by the deadly force legislation. She opposed a 2001 state law that made it easier to get a license to carry a concealed weapon when the rationale of proponents was that guns would only be used as a last resort."

"'This is basically saying guns are going to be the first resort,' she said. 'It's more likely you're going to end up shooting your son coming home late from a date … than you are an intruder.'" ...

"Welcome to Massachusetts - you're more likely to be indoctrinated by liberal lies here."

"Returning students like myself are probably familiar by now with the billboard I'm referring to, located on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Fenway Park. The propaganda, put up by Stop Handgun Violence (SHV), a non-profit organization based in the Newton office of the Meredith Management Corporation, reads, 'Welcome to Massachusetts. You're more likely to live here. Most effective gun laws and lowest gun fatality rate in the country. Gun laws work.' If you haven't seen it yet, it's worth taking a look. That massive billboard could be one of the biggest lies you'll ever see." ...
-------

Submitter's Note: Actually, according to the CDC's WISQARS website, Mass. does have the lowest firearm death rate in the country. But since Washington DC has the highest rate (at almost 9 times the Mass. rate) it sort of shoots down the whole "strict gun laws" theory.
