Each year, more than 40,000 Americans die from drug overdoses. That's on par with the annual death toll from HIV/AIDS at the peak of the US epidemic, in the late '80s and early '90s, and far more than are killed each year from car accidents or gun violence. More than half of those overdose deaths involved opioids, a class of drugs including heroin, Vicodin, OxyContin, and fentanyl.

Earlier this year, Gov. Terry McAuliffe admirably defended the rights of law-abiding citizens to protect themselves and others by signing legislation that restored Virginia’s concealed carry reciprocity with 25 states. This allowed millions of law-abiding gun owners to travel safely in and out of the commonwealth while ensuring the rights of Virginians are recognized in states that have concealed carry reciprocity agreements.

A Michigan man who can’t buy a gun because he was briefly treated for mental health problems in the 1980s has won a key decision from a federal appeals court, which says the burden is on the government to justify a lifetime ban against him.
The Second Amendment case was significant enough for 16 judges on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to participate. Cases usually are heard only by three-judge panels.

Dear Mrs. O’Neil,

Earlier today, I had the opportunity to read your open letter to the actress in the short film, “Never Met Her”, and being both deeply involved in the debate on guns and somewhat familiar with the complexities of the history of feminism I feel compelled to respond to what I came to recognize as both a failure to understand who and what you were criticizing and a tone that betrayed your stated objective of speaking to her as a peer from a place of equal standing. A conversation from equal standing was never your intent.

If someone made a master list of uncomfortable dinner-table topics (that probably exists somewhere already, though) gun control would probably be in the top five. It’s a topic that requires not only the wherewithal to bring up painful and traumatic events in U.S. history, both recent and distant, and also requires that anyone discussing it buckle down for a long, grueling conversation. Or debate, depending on the company and the time of year.

#NotAllMuslims are terrorists, but Dahir Adan was. That’s the name of the terrorist who ran around a mall in Minnesota on Saturday, asking people if they were Muslim and then stabbing them. Nobody was killed, and that’s thanks to a civilian who put a stop to it by exercising his Second Amendment rights.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed, if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly, you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves. — Winston Churchill
