"Some 5,000 liberty-minded Americans have been holding an election, but for a state rather than a candidate, and the one they choose will be a laboratory for what they call the biggest experiment in democracy since the Revolutionary War."

"...the winning state is to be announced Oct. 1. Then members of the Free State Project hope to quadruple their numbers within 2 years, move there, and start transforming it into a national model for small government, few laws and individual liberty."

"On the surface, the Patriot Act may seem to aid our war on terrorism. It gives the U.S. attorney general the power to bypass a court warrant to install the Carnivore e-mail snooping system, which was stricken down during the Clinton administration."

"It expands the legal definition of a 'terrorist.' It also introduces a 'roving wiretap' that makes it easier for the government to tap multiple phones by following a suspect, including his home, office and cell phones."

"One of the more Orwellian powers it grants federal agents is allowing them to enter your home, without a warrant, and copy your computer files, all without your knowledge."

"These and other powers that the act gives to federal authorities might not matter to many individuals. After all, if you're not a terrorist or doing something wrong, what do you have to worry about, right?"

"Gun control is a very controversial issue in our world today. Some believe that the Second Amendment ensures us the right to have a gun, but others believe when the Constitution was made, guns weren't used the same way as they are today, so the amendment doesn't have the same meaning."

"It doesn't matter how you interpret it, the facts show gun violence has gotten out of hand, and something needs to be done. Gun control is one way of solving the issue." ...

"The lack of laws in our country is one reason that guns get in the wrong hands, and end up being a devastating factor."

Over 20,000 gun control on the books must not be enough for this by-product of public education.

"According to officials, the number of gang members in the area has skyrocketed to more than 3,000. Many of the members belong to gangs with links to established Latino, African-American, and Asian gangs in other states."

"Although D.C. police have strengthened their gang unit, developed a database to share information, and received a $500,000 federal grant to fight the problem, gangs continue to leave their violent mark."

"This summer alone, four murders were linked to gangs, as well as a number of shootings and beatings."

Here is a favorite:

"Sure, there are a million ways to improve in-flight security in the post-911 era. But you seem to be forgetting that airline security is a monopoly of the FAA and the TSA. Don't you think that the airlines should be allowed to compete in offering security solutions, instead of just being forced to follow the orders of regulation-quoting bureaucrats?"

"The latest embarrassment is the revelation that the Department of Justice has not invoked the Patriot Act's Section 215 - a section of the act that the ACLU crowd claims has turned the FBI into a library-raiding Gestapo."

"What, in reality, is Section 215? It's a relatively innocuous provision of the Patriot Act that allows law enforcement to obtain, after getting approval from a judge, documents from third parties - your credit card company, for example - if they're pertinent to a terrorism investigation."

"However, the Crime Suppression Division police's revelation that gun shops in Thailand might have been a major source of weapons delivered to terrorist groups, including the insurgent Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Sri Lanka, is a clear explanation to Mr. Thaksin's remark."

"The LTTE is believed to be a client of gun shops in Thailand. A CSD source Mr. Thaksin received this information during his official visit to Sri Lanka in the middle of last month."

Bush's unprecedented and unconstitutional arrogance of power that threatens the fundamental right of American citizens to have access to their lawyers before disappearing indefinitely into military custody without charges, without seeing an attorney or anyone except their guards."

"John Lott hit the nail on the head when he wrote that mainly law-abiding citizens, not criminals, will be obeying the City Council's proposed new 'gun-control' laws."

"If Mayor Bloomberg and these politicians were really interested in protecting the public from violence with the use of guns, I'm certain they would have received widespread support from conservatives and liberals alike - if they worked together with Gov. Pataki and our Albany representatives in passing legislation that would mandate prison terms for anyone using a gun during the commission of a crime." ...

"After exhaustive but failed attempts to convince campus officials that director Michael Moore's 'Bowling for Columbine' film - which is under investigation for rules violations in association with his Academy Award entry - did not belong on campus television, the Second Amendment Club at Ohio University decided to promote an event on campus to ensure that the truth had it's say as well."

"The group invited economist John Lott to speak on campus, and Lott accepted. Ohioans For Concealed Carry agreed to sponsor the event, which will occur on Monday, September 22 at 6:00 p.m."

"Apparently there are a few people with free time on their hands at The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence (formerly Handguns Control, Inc.) these days, because soon after the Club and OFCC began publicizing the event, Club President Curt Winzenreid received a most ironic email from Brady/HCI communications director Peter Hamm, entitled 'concerns about your planned speaker Monday'."

"In the letter, Hamm engages in baseless personal, ad hominem attacks on Lott's character, and then uses Stanford professor John J. Donohue III to try and call Lott's research into question. OFCC supporters may remember how Donohue was caught telling a lie in a Columbus Dispatch letter to the editor a few months ago."

"This is the sort of reassurance we've come to expect from Ashcroft. A few days before he finally agreed to reveal how often Section 215 had been used, he condemned the provision's critics for stirring up 'baseless hysteria.' "

"Actually, one of the critics' main points was that you'd never know if the FBI snooped through your records, because the people required to provide them are forbidden to talk about it.
