The facts are on the table and a disarmed crossing guard took her first attempt at having a city policy that prohibits city employees from carrying a firearm, open or concealed, removed from the handbook.

And after a lengthy discussion between residents and council members, the policy is still in place — for now.

A recent resolution passed by Harbor Beach city council has prevented Casey Armitage from holstering her gun while working as a city employee for Harbor Beach Community Schools as one of the district’s crossing guards.

In the city’s employee handbook, a policy states no city employee, other than police, can carry a concealed weapon. The revised policy now prohibits open and concealed carry by all city employees...

Josh Suzik tried to kill himself on a sunny afternoon last fall.

He didn't succeed, but he shot off part of his face.

Of Michigan counties with the highest per capita gun deaths, nine of the top 10 are in the Upper Peninsula or north of Mount Pleasant in the Lower Peninsula. Those two regions collectively contain about 1 million people or 10 percent of the state's population.

But unlike crime-ridden areas such as Detroit or Flint, the gun violence in northern Michigan tends to go under the radar. Of the 1,689 gun deaths in northern Michigan between 1999 and 2014, 1,514 - 90 percent - were suicides.

At Doctors for Responsible Gun Ownership (DRGO) we’ve often written about advocacy science, which really isn’t science at all.

Rather, it is politics masquerading as science. There’s also such a thing as advocacy journalism, which really isn’t journalism at all. It is politics masquerading as journalism.

DRGO recently was approached by Kaiser Health News reporter Shefali Luthra for a story on the latest pediatric journal article aimed at shoring up the case for doctors probing their patients about guns in their homes.

Clinton Set to Get What She Wants From Supreme Court

It isn’t unusual for presidential candidates to discuss the actions of the Supreme Court on the campaign trail — hailing some precedents and promising to overturn others. However, in most election years, the campaign rhetoric is just that: empty rhetoric.

By design, the Constitution limits how far any one president can go in circumventing, overruling or limiting the Supreme Court or the Constitution itself. In 2016, however, the stars have aligned for Secretary Hillary Clinton so that campaign pledges regarding constitutional law are not just empty promises. Indeed, in 2016, such promises are deliverable.

Smith & Wesson debuted their newest addition to the M&P Shield line at the NRA Show in Louisville, KY earlier this year. The latest Shield, chambered in .45 ACP, answered the call of many Smith fans looking for more firepower on a familiar platform.

Though the .45 ACP model is an upgraded take on the classic Shield design, many Smith fans wondered if it would live up to the quality they’ve come to expect from the M&P Shield family. I set to find out.

An unexpected shootout over guns erupted in a House hearing on terrorism Wednesday, prompting a pro-gun lawmaker to mock ineffective anti-gun laws and call for an end to gun free zones because they have become shooting galleries.

"We cannot rely on the federal government and this big bureaucracy to continue to try keep us safe. We've got to revert back, I believe, to the individuals, the law-abiding citizens in this country. We've got to look at the gun laws that are out there now that prohibit law abiding citizens from being able to carry firearms in areas where they could protect themselves," demanded Rep. Jeff Duncan.

Deputies arrived on scene and located a neighbor standing in the front yard of the residence holding a handgun. The neighbor told deputies that he came to the residence because he heard a disturbance and came to see if he could help.

As he approached the residence he encountered the 43-year-old male resident who was also armed with a handgun and pointed the gun at his arriving neighbor. The neighbor fearing for his life fired first, striking the resident and killing him.

Do Guns Protect Women? They're More Likely To Kill Them, Says Violence Policy Center Report & The Findings Aren't New

Gun violence in the United States is a serious problem, and it's one that has serious effects for women. Contrary to claims that guns make women safer, a new Violence Policy Center report shows that guns are more likely to kill women than protect them, and that gun reform laws are actually very effective at protecting women. And those findings are very much in line with what we already know about guns and violence against women.

Opponents of gun reform often claim not only that guns are important for self-defense, but also that guns are especially important for women who need to protect themselves. All available evidence, however, does not support this idea at all, and the new Violence Policy Center report only reaffirms those findings.

“The National Rifle Association released its latest ad in support of Donald Trump on Tuesday, claiming a vote for Hillary Clinton would leave the people defenseless. The NRA’s new commercial, which is part of a $5 million campaign, depicts a woman reacting to a break-in at her house. A narrator claims: ‘Hillary Clinton would take away her right to self-defense, and with Supreme Court Justices, Hillary can.’ ”

Background checks hit an all-time monthly high last month, based on statistics just released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

State gun background checks in August totaled 185,912 -- the first time Illinois surpassed 100,000 in a single month. Last month's number was almost twice that of August 2015.

Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association, said those statistics confirm a growing trend he's seen over the past several years.

“Universal background checks…. Effectiveness depends on … gun registration….” So says the National Institute of Justice, part of the Obama Justice Department, in a 2013 study. Criminalizing the transfer of firearms between law-abiding citizens – the only ones who would undergo background checks – has nothing to do with preventing violence, but everything to do with registering gun owners.

Will changes in Missouri’s Conceal and Carry Gun law impact public safety? The controversy over the law continues despite the Missouri Legislature’s successful override of Governor Jay Nixon’s veto of the bill (Senate Bill 656).

Beginning January 1, 2017, the new statute eliminates the current requirements for a permit issued by a local sheriff or county police department and the 8 hour gun safety course. Permits and the course will still be available and anyone who needs to carry a concealed gun into another state will need the permit.

Haskell allegedly bit the finger of the man who had been holding him down and then said he would get a gun and shoot the pair. One of the men reported he knew there had been a gun in the house.

The men left the house and got in a vehicle to leave when Haskell allegedly came out and ran toward the vehicle with something in his hand. One of the men leaving said he had his own handgun and fired a warning shot to ward off Haskell, according to the affidavit.

Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Baroody said that the man who fired off the shot would not be charged, saying the state would not be able to disprove self-defense.

The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) launched a TV ad on Tuesday exposing U.S. Senate candidate Jason Kander’s attempt to misrepresent his Second Amendment voting record. The spot, “Blindfold,” focuses on votes Kander cast in Jefferson City and demonstrates that he's a politician who will say anything to get elected.

“The stakes for law-abiding gun owners in this election have never been higher. Missourians cannot afford to elect a liberal politician who says one thing and does another,” said Chris W. Cox, chairman, NRA-PVF. “Jason Kander is no different than Hillary Clinton – willing to say whatever he thinks will get him elected to national office."

Appeals court judges had tough questions Tuesday for attorneys defending a District of Columbia law that makes it difficult for gun owners to get concealed carry permits.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit heard arguments Tuesday in two cases involving the law, which requires people who want to carry a gun in public to show a “good reason to fear injury” or another “proper reason” to carry the weapon. Reasons might include a personal threat, or a job that requires a person to carry or protect cash or valuables. Fewer than 100 people have been granted a concealed carry permit under the law, and lower court judges have disagreed on whether it is likely constitutional.

ID: Time to upgrade Castle Doctrine in Idaho

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Castle Doctrine essentially says that when a person illegally breaks into your home, you have the right to defend yourself and your family. Well isn’t that the law in Idaho?

It’s not necessarily!

In fact, in Idaho, you have to prove that you felt your life, or the life of your loved ones, was in jeopardy. The burden of proof is on the homeowner, the victim, to prove that they needed to defend their life.

Does that sound right to you?

MN: Trehus will take away high-powered rifles

Do you want government to take your guns? DFL state representative candidate Thomas Trehus does.

When asked about gun control at a recent town meeting, he stated that when it comes to some high-powered rifles, “I don’t think they have a place in civilian life,” and that “I don’t see a lot of folks hunting with them around here.”

That sound you just heard was every local hunter failing over in shock.

Apparently, Trehus doesn’t know that you can hunt deer, moose or bear with rifles in northern Minnesota, or that high-powered rifles are almost exclusively used to control foxes, coyotes and other predatory animals.

In essence, the gun-rights advocates say that the State Department regulations amount to what’s called a “prior restraint” on speech – a ban on talking before you’ve even said anything. Prior restraints are profoundly disfavored in First Amendment law as a barrier to the free flow of ideas.

The district court refused to issue the injunction – and on Tuesday a divided panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit issued an opinion upholding the district court’s decision.

Raso’s warning was unfortunately realized this past weekend, when an Islamic extremist made references to Allah while brutally stabbing nearly a dozen innocent people at a gun-free mall in St. Could, Minnesota. Had it not been for an off duty officer who shot and killed the terrorist, many more could have been injured or killed. Even in gun-free zones, the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.

Following the horrific event, Johnson took to his Media Matters page. Instead of writing about the threat of radical Islamic terror or the dangers of gun-free zones, the art-history major continued his attacks on Raso and the NRA.
