COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — As South Carolina rivers overflowed from Florence's torrential rain, deputies taking two women to a mental health facility drove into floodwaters that engulfed their van and trapped the women inside, officials said Wednesday.
Thompson told reporters that deputies appear to have driven around a barrier blocking the road but the investigation is ongoing.
"It hasn't been confirmed to me that they did, but here's my question: There's barriers there. It could be assumed that he did," Thompson said Wednesday.
Submitter's note: But they saved their own sorry hides. The charge is negligent homicide, but don't expect any chargers for only ones. |

Last April, two Illinois counties, Iroquois and Effingham, kicked off the movement to create gun sanctuary counties to oppose what many residents feel are oppressive laws that curtail Second Amendment rights. Since then, more rural areas have caught onto the idea. |

Gun control advocates often use some version of the phrase “if it saves one life” in order to justify their ineffective proposals. This week, the anti-gun editorial page of the Chicago Sun-Times offered a different take. Fearful that the Right-to-Carry was getting too much good publicity in the wake of an Illinois concealed carry permit holder’s heroic actions, the Sun-Times editorial board felt it necessary to lecture its readers, “One brave rescue of a Cicero cop doesn’t justify concealed guns.” |

Last year, an appellate court used the logic Scalia deployed in Heller to rule that modern assault rifles like the AR-15 and AK-47 are also not protected by the Second Amendment, because the weapons are not “in common use.” The decision upheld Maryland’s assault weapons law. Attorneys for the state noted that such guns comprise only 3 percent of the total civilian arsenal of approximately 310 million firearms, citing a 2012 Congressional Research Service report. |

“I learned that a lot of our issues politically come from a lack of understanding of other perspectives and also the fact that so often young conservatives and young liberals will go into debate, like I said earlier, trying to beat the other one as oppose to come to an agreement,” he said.
Although his departure from the group likely won’t mean that March For Our Lives will crumble, at least it shows that, yes, even those who appear to staunchly oppose gun rights can be swayed when a Second Amendment supporter gives him food for thought. |

Bredesen was elected governor in 2002, and Chris Cox responded to Bredesen’s video by pointing out that this is 2018, not 2002. Moreover, regardless of Bredesen’s rating then, his rating now is a D.
Cox wrote pointedly, “Its 2018, you have earned a D rating for turning your back on self-defense and supporting the Hillary/Schumer/Bloomberg gun control agenda.”
Cox then urged Tennesseans to vote for Marsha Blackburn (R) for Senate and demanded that Bredesen “stop lying.” |

Democrat Beto O'Rourke pushed back on attacks from Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz that he supports revoking Americans' right to own guns, saying he "fully" supports the Second Amendment.
O'Rourke supports judges "that would undermine and effectively write the Second Amendment out of the Constitution," Cruz said during the first debate with O'Rourke, who is challenging Cruz for his Senate seat in Texas.
Cruz added that O'Rourke's position on the Second Amendment is "radical" and extreme," eliciting a "that's not true" from O'Rourke. |

Malloy is not running for a third term due to massive negatives. The two candidates who are running have very different views on our Second Amendment rights. Democrat Ned Lamont, best known for beating Joe Lieberman in a 2006 primary, plans to go further than Malloy did, vowing to support gun buybacks and gun-rationing schemes. Lamont backed the semi-auto ban, even though rifles of all types kill less than 25 percent of the total number of people killed with knives.
In short, if you like what Malloy did with your gun rights, Democrat Ned Lamont, promises more of the same |

During a confirmation hearing for President Trump’s latest Supreme Court nominee, Feinstein ludicrously claimed that semiautomatic rifles like the AR-15 – long heralded as “America’s Rifle” – are not “in common use.”
We now have more than 16 million reasons to disagree with her.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), the firearms industry trade association, has calculated the number of semi-automatic rifles – including AR and AK pattern rifle – produced (minus those exported) and imported in the U.S. on an annual basis between 1990 and 2016. During that time, there have been approximately 16,069,000 AR and AK semi-automatic rifles available for sale in the United States. |

He questioned how people are supposed to know they're included in the law when categories are added after their convictions. And even when people plead to misdemeanors already on the list, they aren't told it means they can't legally possess firearms anymore.
Dick Clark, a Lincoln attorney and gun-rights supporter, said he considers the decision a rebuke of the city's strategy in passing an ordinance that denies people their constitutional right to bear arms without connecting the dots in a rational way to establish how it makes the city safer. |

The mainstream media largely ignored it when it happened, and only on some social media has it gotten the credit it deserves, but Sen. Ted Cruz’s beat down of Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee over their position on guns relating to the confirmation of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court was the stuff of which great movie scenes are made. |

Please click the “Take Action” button below to contact Councilwoman Gaylor Baird (402-441-7515) and other city council members in order to urge them to oppose unnecessary gun control measures such as this. |
