Amid calls for a special legislative session after the May 24 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has not changed his stance on gun laws or on calling a special session.
Uvalde community members have called on officials to raise the minimum age from 18 to 21 to purchase semi-automatic rifles, like the AR-15-like assault-style rifle used to kill 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary. Some states have raised the age to buy a semi-automatic rifle to 21, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. |

Members of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus met Tuesday with the National African American Gun Association and the House Second Amendment Caucus to discuss gun issues in the commonwealth, according to PLBC Chair Donna Bullock.
“In order to get something done on gun crime and violence, we need to talk to every stakeholder,” said Bullock, D-Phila. “Though we may disagree on some policy issues, it doesn’t mean we can’t talk about the gun violence that is plaguing the commonwealth and where we can find common ground to make a difference. |

My dad came to me looking for a concealed carry gun. He wanted a small revolver, and he had a number of requirements.
First, he wanted at least a .38 Special +P. Second, he wanted an exposed hammer, and third, he specifically did not want what he called a’ dinky’ little grip.
I translated those requirements to my local FFL, and he said he had the gun for me. He pulled out a familiar blue box and unveiled a Smith & Wesson 637, specifically a 637-2. |

Earlier this year, the United States Supreme Court ruled in favor of the 2nd Amendment in the Bruen case, stating that the New York state gun laws restricting concealed carry were unconstitutional.
The Empire State made it virtually impossible to obtain a permit to carry a weapon outside of your home. It was one of a handful of states that required a gun owner to prove a necessity for getting a permit.
The Bruen decision sent New York and other anti-2nd Amendment states scrambling. It also put gun owners into a state of anticipation as they watched and waited to see what changes the unelected governor would make. |

Attorney General Paxton has joined a Montana-led amicus brief in the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, pushing back against an activist judiciary ignoring federal law and Americans’ constitutional rights under the 2nd amendment.
In Gustafson v. Springfield Armory, a Pennsylvania couple is attempting to hold liable a gun manufacturer, Springfield Armory, and a gun dealer, Saloom Department Store, for their son’s death despite the fact that the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) was passed precisely in order to protect the firearms industry from such lawsuits.
Like the trial court that first heard this case, courts across the nation have consistently upheld the PLCAA’s constitutionality. |

Ludacris' manager, Chaka Zulu, has been arrested for murder in connection with the fatal shooting of a man outside his restaurant -- but new video from the incident shows Zulu getting beaten by a group of men before he fired -- giving way to a self-defense argument.
We've obtained surveillance footage recorded June 26 outside Zulu's Atlanta restaurant Apt4B. A group of men, including Artez Benton -- who was killed in the melee -- arrive to Apt4B, park in the valet area and make their way inside. 10 minutes later, the men leave the restaurant -- owned by Zulu -- after some sort of dispute.

A huge firearms survey that was updated earlier this year found that gun owners use their firearms in self-defense in roughly 1.67 million incidents a year. The survey also found that gun owners are diverse.
According to the survey, guns are used in self-defense in roughly 1.67 million incidents a year, and around a third of gun owners – just over 30 percent – have used a gun to defend themselves or their property. The survey of 16,708 gun owners was conducted between February 17 and March 23, 2021, and was updated in May 2022. |

A 26-year-old San Francisco man was found not guilty of murder after a jury decided that he acted in self-defense during a fight on Folsom Street.
Thomas Ortiz was locked in the San Francisco County Jail for five years before he had a chance to prove his innocence in court. A three-month-long trial ended last week when the jury found him not guilty on all counts.
Prosecutors said Ortiz fatally shot 21-year-old Ernesto Rosales on New Year’s Day in 2017. Ortiz was also 21 years old at the time. |

A man arrested in connection with a Myrtle Beach double homicide last year will appear before a judge in November to argue that his actions were taken in self-defense.
Brandon Hembree, 22, of Easley, has requested a hearing to determine if his charges could be dropped under the Protection of Persons and Property Act, the state’s version of a stand-your-ground law.
Hembree was charged with two counts of murder and one count of possessing a weapon during a violent crime for an alleged drug-related shooting incident that left two men dead on June 10, 2021. |

A grandmother, who was accused of murdering her husband and then setting her house on fire when she was arrested, has been found not guilty.
Janet Alexander, 72, was acquitted Tuesday of the murder of Lionel Alexander, 64. The trial lasted six days.
It was April 27, 2018, when Houston police were called to a home on Valley Wind Drive on the city's east side.
Lionel Alexander had been stabbed to death. Janet told police the couple had been arguing and things escalated.
He had a knife, she said, and she took control of it. She said she acted in self-defense after decades of abuse. |

Federal law enforcement agencies pointed to Wisconsin’s open carry law when debriefing one another on their response to armed groups that night. A redacted U.S. Marshals Service communication obtained by the Wisconsin Examiner noted marshals responded to “multiple, armed subject calls and vehicles of armed people roving neighborhoods.” Although people in those groups were identified by the marshals, no arrests were made. “Wisconsin is an open carry state,” the marshal wrote. |

A New York bodega is being sued after a worker fatally stabbed a man in self-defense while on duty. The deceased brother filed a lawsuit saying his brother’s death was unwarranted and was a result of poor crisis training by the owner.
David Simon, the brother of Austin Simon, is suing the Blue Moon Convenience store in Hamilton Heights, a neighborhood in the northern part of Manhattan and northwestern part of the village of Harlem, for the man’s July 1, death. |

Just before midnight on Sunday a 26-year old man was found shot in the chest at the Welcome INN in North Platte. The shooter was on scene when Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies and rescue responders arrived.
The call came into the Lincoln County 911 Center at 11:28, Saturday, September 17. No names are being released at this time, and no one is under arrest. The 26-year-old was taken to Great Plains Health and then flown to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha for treatment. He is in serious but stable condition according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department. |

California will be the first state to set up an office dedicated to reducing gun violence by keeping firearms away from “dangerous individuals” and promoting research and data collection, state Attorney General Rob Bonta (D) said Wednesday.
Bonta, who called the number of gun violence deaths in the United States an epidemic, said the Office of Gun Violence Prevention will “examine a broad range of factors” and seek an evidence-based and data-driven approach. Bonta’s wife, State Assembly member Mia Bonta (D), sponsored a bill in February that called for the office’s creation. |

The Justice Department plans to appeal a Texas judge's ruling that a federal law blocking people under felony indictment from purchasing firearms is unconstitutional in light of the Supreme Court's latest gun-related ruling.
U.S. District Judge David Counts found that the law's prohibitions did not correlate with the Supreme Court's June decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen, in which the justices voted 6-3 (along conservative-liberal ideological lines) that law-abiding citizens have a right to carry a handgun outside the home for self-defense purposes.
"The Second Amendment is not a 'second class right,'" Counts wrote. |

All of which should prompt advocates of more restrictions on firearms to ponder shifting tack in the campaign to curb gun violence. If the courts are turning out to be no friends of more gun control, perhaps it’s time for policy makers to move beyond tilting at the Second Amendment.
How about focusing instead on steps that likely would draw little opposition while making a real difference — like beefing up security at our children’s schools? Let’s have more police deployed as school resource officers. And tighter limits on access during the school day. There’s even a program that has been training faculty and staff in firearms use if needed to defend kids at dozens of participating school districts around the state. |
