The Dangers of Democracy

"In order to understand why the right to keep and bear arms is crucial to a free society, it is first essential to realize that true freedom cannot coexist with coercion – even if said coercion is perpetuated by a majority rule – democracy. By its very nature, democracy is mob rule – the many imposing their will on the few. And by its very nature, democracy is inconsistent with freedom. In a democracy your rights can be trampled by a simple majority vote – without regard for objective, moral principles of right and wrong. And as Ilana astutely explains in her razor-sharp condemnation of Tony Blair’s Britain, 'A right that can’t be defended… is a right that exists only in name.' "

"I killed my first deer on an October morning two days after my fourteenth birthday. I was hunting on my grandmother's ranch in south-central Colorado, and I can still see that deer, ghost-gray in the dawn, its form more like smoke than animal."

"I remember how my chest was tight and my arms and legs shook. I remember the shot and I can still see the young buck fall. And I still feel the mixture of sadness and elation--a strange cocktail that I have sipped many times since. I do not remember much about the rifle that I shot." ...

"It is clear to me that there is a widening gulf in the sporting community. When we elect a president this fall, there will be those who vote wildlife and those who vote gun. With 47 million sporting votes at stake, and two candidates vying for 5 percent of the voters in crucial states where a lot of hunters live, the ramifications are huge." ...

"Calling the Brazilian leader's proposal 'forceful and convincing,' Chirac was reluctant to back a levy on weapons manufacturers in France and elsewhere, but suggested a global tax on firearms purchases made by individuals, said the report."

"A judge has denied a new trial for five Miami officers convicted in plots to cover up the planting of guns on unarmed suspects shot by police."

"The 28-page order issued Monday by U.S. District Judge Alan Gold opens the door to an appeal by four officers sentenced to prison following a 2003 trial and the sentencing of three officers convicted in an April retrial. Two other turncoat officers are awaiting sentencing on their guilty pleas."

"But according to his attorney, Joseph Lullo Jr., 40, a nine-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was acting in self-defense. Gus Munoz, Lullo's attorney, said the security guard and police officer got into a fight and the guard was choking Lullo toward the end of the Sox's extra-innings win over the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field."

It states nothing about defending property, country or hunting. It was put into place because of the experience at that time. Times have changed." ...

"In 1994, President Clinton signed into law the ban of 19 types of dangerous assault weapons. There was a stipulation, or "sunset clause," which stated the ban would be lifted in 10 years if Congress didn't renew it. President Bush claims he would sign the bill renewing the ban if it made its way across his desk. Unbelievably, these assault weapons that will now flood the streets of the United States are the same type our military is trying so hard to get off the streets of Iraq."

KABA NOTE: TRIPE!

"In 1994 the Internet wasn't commonplace in every home, providing people with unlimited access to just about any type of information they desire. The Internet has also become a tool for the unethical and even the criminal to market products such as legalized guns and medications, without really knowing to whom they are selling these products. ... It only stands to reason that there will be opportunists offering assault weapons like Uzis, AK-47s and TEC-9s online without giving a second thought as to who the purchaser is on the other side of the screen. ..." ...

"The assault weapons ban, which limits 19 kinds of semi-automatic weapons, expired Sept. 13. The House of Representatives never brought it to a vote."

"Behind the ban’s expiration is none other than the National Rifle Association (NRA), an organization aggressive and funded enough to keep Republicans in its pocket and Democrats running scared."

"The NRA, rather than politicians fighting for the rights of their hunting constituents, is responsible for the virtually unchallenged death of the ban." ...

A 16-year-old girl opened fire on her alleged rapist in Tijuana on Tuesday.

The shooting took place in the La Presa district. The girl told authorities she shot her cousin's husband four times when he entered her home.

The teen said she didn't tell anyone after the 39-year-old man raped her two weeks ago. She told authorities that she was alone when he tried to go into her house Tuesday.

The girl reportedly used her father's gun to shoot the man, who remains in the hospital Wednesday. There is no word on his condition.

"'For a decade, we had a national consensus that included the policymakers that we had to be careful, at least a bit careful, about what kind of weapons we put out there,' said Dr. Katherine Kaufer Christoffel, a professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine."

A 42-year-old employee of Edgewater Technology, located in Wakefield, took an AK-47 assault rifle from his gym bag and gunned down seven of his co-workers."

"In Malden earlier this month, officials believe that an assault weapon was used in a local bank robbery."

"For a change, Congress did something sensible. It refused to extend the so-called assault weapons ban, thereby enraging the loony left, the uninformed and the fearful."

"The term assault weapon was coined so as to create fear in the minds of the fearful and uniformed. In fact, the so-called assault weapon is the same as many hunting rifles. It shoots each time the trigger is pulled - one trigger pull, one shot. It does not spray shots when the trigger is held down, which is what some gun control proponents would like you to believe. A weapon that does that is a fully automatic weapon and can really be called an assault weapon. What was banned were semiautomatic weapons that resembled a military weapon. Basically the ban had to do with the appearance rather the performance of the weapon." ...

"I heard John Kerry blathering about how he, as a hunter, never felt the need for an AK-47 or an Uzi. Interesting observation there, but I know of no hunters who feel that need. Nobody hunts with full-auto rifles like the AK47, and the Uzi is a small-caliber weapon unsuitable for hunting."

"Kerry then went on to make statements about how, since the "assault weapons" ban was allowed to die, now people could go out and buy AK-47s and Uzis if they wanted to. Wrong."

"Real, honest AK-47s and Uzis are capable of selective switching to fully automatic fire, and that is the key element in defining an assault weapon. These full-auto weapons have been banned since the 1930s." ...

"Concerning the sunset provisions of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, the multitude of police officers and law enforcement organizations who asked for an extension of the ban are correct. We are under constant alerts to the threat of terrorism, and although people may scoff at the idea of terrorists getting their hands on an assault weapon, the infamous sniper John Allen Muhammad in Maryland was using a .223-caliber Bushmaster XM15 assault rifle."

"It could be argued that the ban was mostly on cosmetic issues such as bayonets, etc. However, a clip holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition is more of an assault weapon than a hunting or self-defense item." [emphasis added] ...

This is unacceptable, particularly when lawmakers cannot refer to one incident in which a crime was committed in the United States with this rifle. California lawmakers, in lockstep with their gun-ban buddies, have suggested that such a law will "keep guns out of the hands of terrorists."  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
There is no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws. — Ayn Rand in her must-read novel, Atlas Shrugged
