As any science-fiction fan knows, a smart gun is designed to work only for the person authorized to use it. Since the 19th century, Smith & Wesson, Colt, and even Silicon Valley have all attempted to disrupt the now-multibillion dollar gun industry and bring a theft-proof firearm to market. While politics and public opinion have hampered previous efforts, a new generation of smart guns is now on the cusp of becoming reality. |

This is part three of the four part series on the virtue of self-defense.
We are in a cultural conflict where freedom is under attack on many fronts. I chose to talk about self-defense. Self-defense should be more than a right we reluctantly tolerate. Self-defense is actually a virtue we should support.
What would we do if we really valued self-defense? Here are more examples.. and thank you for your suggestions.

Most of us have opinions on gun rights, don’t we?
So did the New York State Bar Association, and so they recently put out a report called “Understanding the Second Amendment: Gun Regulation in America Today and Yesterday.”
The report outlines the issues of gun violence, the current state of the law in light of 2008’s District of Columbia v. Heller and 2010’s McDonald v. City of Chicago, the history of the Second Amendment, and the significance of the gun-violence data we don’t have. There’s also analysis of New York’s SAFE Act. |

The Obama administration has been able to run roughshod over almost all opposition in the Congress for a number of reasons. One that is put forward is that Congress fears being blamed for a “Government Shutdown”.
This translates to a fear of the old media blaming Congress, and the electorate believing the media. I mention this because of the recent CCN poll. |

Following press coverage of Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-TX) comment during the second GOP presidential debate that he was "honored" to have won the endorsement of Gun Owners of America (GOA), the group lashed out at media coverage documenting its long history of extremism. In an open letter posted on its website, GOA claimed it has "NEVER aligned ourselves with racist groups" -- despite the fact that the group's leader, Larry Pratt, once acknowledged that he directed GOA to donate "tens of thousands of dollars" to a white supremacist organization and shared the stage with white supremacists at rallies organized by the racist Christian Identity movement in the 1990s.

Does it surprise you to learn that teenagers in Wyoming, New Mexico, and Virginia are more likely to report having carried a gun in the last month than teenagers in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York? Does it worry you? Ziming Xuan and David Hemenway, the authors of a study published yesterday by JAMA Pediatrics, think it should, and CNN seems to agree. What's not clear is why.

We noticed something important at last year’s Texas Firearms Festival: new shooters. Ticket holders who’d never shot a gun before. To their credit, kind-hearted reps from mainstream manufacturers took the time to introduce newbies to the joys of shooting. Unfortunately, it was a fairly slow process. Thanks to the Texas State Rifle Association (TSRA) and UTM, we’re dedicating the entire Best of the West outdoor pistol range to “learn to shoot” instruction, available to both Shooter and Non-Shooter ticket holders. |

Yes, I chose open carry. I know: carrying openly makes me vulnerable to a gun grab and/or a “shoot-him-first” attack. But gun rights are my job. I am a defender and spokesman for Americans’ natural, civil and Constitutionally protected right to keep and bear arms. I’ve decided to walk the talk. Literally. To fly the flag. |

As intimidating as guns can be, that is no reason to avoid them, says Karen Kevelson.
“Ignorance is a dangerous thing. If you become more educated, you become more able to make a decision,” said the Marion resident.
Kevelson was one of 24 participants in the National Rifle Association’s Women on Target program, held at the Sippican Rod & Gun Club on Saturday. The all-day program gives women a foundation in safe gun use, hands-on training and qualifies participants to apply for a License to Carry or a Firearms Identity Card.

It doesn't matter if state law allows people to openly carry guns on the University of Michigan's campus, the university argued in a recent court filing, because only U-M's board can set U-M policy.
That's because, in U-M's view, the Michigan Constitution exempts U-M from having to pay attention to a state law banning local governmental units from making weapons laws.

I distinctly remember the day that the Sandy Hook Shooting happened. I was a senior in high school living in Stamford, Connecticut — barely an hour away from Newtown. I decided to head out early from school and get an early start to the weekend, so I grabbed coffee and made my way back home. |
