Thousands of American citizens are organizing in opposition to military retaliation in response to the WTC and Pentagon attacks.

"While the President, congress and much of the media are calling for war," said Kevin Martin, Peace Action's executive director, "many American citizens are calling for an end to the cycle of violence. People from across the nation are voicing opposition to the murder of innocent civilians inside and outside of U.S. borders."

Washington has reiterated its resolve to take "concerted actions in defence of freedom" after Afghanistan's defied a U.S. ultimatum to hand over bin Laden.

"We have resolved to hold to account all of those who are responsible for aiding, financing and otherwise supporting and harbouring terrorists," U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said at a meeting of the Organisation of American States in Washington.

Created in response to last week's bloody attacks, the draft "Mobilization Against Terrorism Act" (MATA) rewrites laws dealing with wiretapping, eavesdropping and immigration. The draft, intended to increase prosecutors' courtroom authority, also unleashes the government's Echelon and Carnivore spy systems.

"Broaching a controversial subject that has gained visibility since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison is calling for the United States to create a national identification card system -- and offering to donate the software to make it possible.

Under Ellison's proposal, millions of Americans would be fingerprinted and the information would be placed on a database used by airport security officials to verify identities of travelers at airplane gates."

Earlier this week, Berkeley fire officials ordered their crews to remove all American flags from fire engines and trucks. They said they thought the flags would make firefighters possible targets of anti-war protestors. But after a public outcry, officials decided just to ban oversized flags.

BOCA RATON, FL -- An art teacher who allowed second graders to express themselves in sketches following the World Trade Center attack was suspended after a parent complained about the creative license.

Patricia Bowes doesn't know what picture the child sketched that prompted the complaint. The school confiscated the drawings, she said.

Pedestrians in central London are captured on closed circuit television about every 10 paces. French citizens must carry national identity cards and present them to police on demand. Spanish authorities may hold terrorism suspects incommunicado for up to five days before formally charging them.

"I fear there will be a point in the United States, as there has been in England and Spain, where people will forget to defend their freedom," said Simon Davies, professor of information systems at London School of Economics, and rights activist.

A 9-year-old student was suspended from his elementary school after bringing a toy G.I. Joe gun to class.

The 6- to 7-inch plastic machine gun had been packaged with a G.I. Joe figurine, said Laurel Miller, the sergeant of investigations for the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
