News of a survey on gun ownership in America conducted by Harvard and Northeastern universities is being touted by several Leftmedia outlets for information that indicates the percentage of overall gun ownership to be smaller than what has often been assumed. The number that has gun-control enthusiasts most excited is the estimate that only 3% of Americans own half of guns in the U.S. The implication is that gun ownership is only prevalent among a tiny minority, thus making gun control more palatable. Trouble is this survey will not be officially released until fall of 2017. Evidently, Americans will just have to trust the media’s word on this. |

It has come to this in gun-crazed Florida. The state has created such a Wild West atmosphere that gun owners are signing up for coaching and legal help so they can be prepared when they shoot someone. It is the disquieting but logical outcome in a state where the National Rifle Association virtually owns state government and the answer to any question about public safety is more guns. |

With the presidential race tighter than ever as it heads into its final stretch, panicked Hillary Clinton supporters are desperate to find a way to discredit, not just Donald Trump, but anyone who would dare support him. Last Sunday, a Clinton surrogate from Virginia added to the candidate’s own list of names for Trump voters (which most recently included “deplorable” and “irredeemable”) by describing them as “mentally deficient.”
Northern Virginia Delegate Mark Levine (D-45) issued the characterization during a Fox News segment that discussed comments Donald Trump made during a campaign rally in Miami on September 16. |

In Saturday's column, I asked candidates for local congressional seats to respond to this video created by some of the families of people who died at Pulse night club.
The families are calling for Congress to ban military-style assault weapons. I asked candidates in the following races whether they supported such a ban and why or why not. Here are their full, unedited responses. |

You've heard the term "sanctuary city" about communities that have become safe havens for undocumented immigrants. Spokane Valley could become a sanctuary city of a different kind, one committed to protecting the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Councilman Caleb Collier said the proposal is meant to send a message that Spokane Valley protects residents' constitutional Second Amendment rights. |

If you ever have to shoot a person in self-defense, forget everything you’ve seen on television or in the movies: shoot to stop the threat. Whether that means a serious wound or a fatal one, don’t bother trying any sort of trick shot to limbs or extremities.
For one, it’s unlikely to work. For two, trying to use non-fatal fire to disable an attacker could actually get you into legal trouble. |

In life-or-death situations, adrenaline mercifully relieves us of the burden of thought, allowing instinct to take over. For most of us — except Summit County’s many extreme sports enthusiasts — it’s something we rarely experience. We owe that in large part to the men and women who expose themselves to such danger every day. |

Four Massachusetts gun retailers and a national shooting organization have filed a federal lawsuit against state Attorney General Maura Healey, alleging her crackdown on the sale of so-called copycat assault weapons is unconstitutional.
In the suit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court, the plaintiffs argue that Healey's enforcement notice is a violation of their Second Amendment gun rights, and that they are being denied due process rights under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments over possible criminal penalties for violating the ban |

People die in horrific shootings. Lawmakers talk about solutions. Nothing passes. They blame one another.
That's how Congress deals with guns, perhaps because balancing safety with Second Amendment rights is tricky. When should someone be labeled a "terrorist" who shouldn't have a gun? When should mental illness preclude someone from purchasing a firearm? How do we keep everyone safe? |

When you see an officer with a gun, you might expect to hear "stop or I'll shoot." But with a new less than lethal tool it's "stop or I'll spray" for deputies in Tyler County. The sheriff is working to replace their tasers with pepper guns. He said the move is not just about keeping deputies safe, but the public too.
"It's another tool in the officer's belt to be able to you know to not use deadly force," Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford said. |
