We're still enjoying Pete Flores's super-victory in a state Senate election in South Texas. He flipped a Democrat seat in a district that the GOP assumed it couldn't win. In fact, the GOP had not win this district in 139 years! How did Mr. Flores do it? How did a novice politician defeat an experienced and well known former congressman? How did a GOP candidate win a district that's 73 percent black and Hispanic? |

The owner of a rifle range near Bigfork is appealing a ruling by the Flathead County zoning administrator to cease operation of the facility because it doesn’t have the permit needed for commercial activity. Michael Krachun, who owns Bigfork Guns and Ammo at 433 Grand Ave. in Bigfork, maintains that his gun range at 395 Echo Bay Trail is a private facility and therefore doesn’t require a permission. |

Polymer-frame, striker-fired pistols have pretty much taken over the law-enforcement and self-defense markets, and they’re making significant inroads into the military market as well. Aside from a few companies that specialize in the 1911 platform, every major pistol manufacturer produces some form of striker-fired polymer gun, and Beretta is no exception. Famous for producing top-quality double-action pistols like the ubiquitous Model 92 and the compact Px4 Storm, Beretta entered the full-size, striker-fired game in 2017 with the APX, a service pistol offering features like interchangeable backstraps and a nice trigger. |

The TriStar C-100 is something of a paradox. It’s a compact, but shoots like a full-size. It’s a clone of the CZ-75 Compact, so it’s an old design. However, it has a lot of modern appointments so it isn’t dated by any means. It’s a value gun (and a great one at that) but doesn’t feel cheap at all and is actually better-made than its price point would suggest. This gun doesn’t do ballads; it’s all metal. However, it’s almost as light as many polymer pistols of the same size thanks to the lightweight alloy frame. It’s a hammer-fired DA/SA pistol in an era of plastic fantastics. |

With just over one month remaining before the November election, Washington gun rights groups are united against Initiative 1639, the 30-page gun control measure that has ignited a grassroots opposition movement that continues gaining momentum.
They are underfunded, but they are energized, reminding everyone within earshot that “dollars don’t vote, people do.” |

A state agency has rejected an application from a rural Virginia school district that voted to arm teachers and other employees as protection against a school shooting. The Washington Post reports that the Department of Criminal Justice Services turned down Lee County Superintendent Brian Austin's application to register as an armed special conservator of the peace. Although crossbows have never held a lot of appeal for me, I have hunted with a borrowed crossbow in the deer-rich state of Maryland. For me, it just seems awkward to carry while still hunting, and it doesn’t have the visual appeal of conventional longbows, recurves or compound bows. As a hunting device, it is accurate and lethal, and, in the eyes of the law and the hardcore bow hunters, neither fish nor fowl. The Maine Warden Service considers the crossbow not to be a firearm. The Maine Bowhunters Association (MBA) could never warm up to the medieval contraption, deeming it not a true bow.
