Hunters and anglers across the country did what they do best on Saturday: participating in outdoors activities with rod, gun or bow, and they’ve earned the right because they have paid the freight.
Saturday was National Hunting & Fishing Day, an occasion that celebrates the time-honored activities of outdoorsmen and women who know that meat doesn’t come from the butcher shop and fish don’t suddenly appear on a layer of crushed ice in a display case at the supermarket. |

The debate over the right to bear arms appears to be brewing again in the Michigan Legislature.
Three bills were introduced last week that would close a loophole in state law that prohibited people from carrying concealed weapons into gun-free zones like schools and bars, but allows them to carry their weapons openly in those areas.
Senate Majority Leader Arlan Meekhof, R-West Olive, wants to have a “fruitful discussion” about gun rights in Michigan, said his spokeswoman, Amber McCann. Although his bill wouldn’t prohibit open-carry of guns in schools and other places, allowing concealed-carry could be less disruptive.

What is the real divide in the United States? Black Lives Matter thinks we are divided by race. Antifa thinks the real divide is about wealth. I think they are wrong, and the great divide in America is about character.
Here is one small example where ordinary people volunteered to be heroes. Some people move toward an accident and try to ease the suffering. Others back away and don’t want to get involved. They want to “leave it to the experts” and make it illegal for you to give aid. Much of our political debate is about which side is right. |

If you read the literature and articles and so forth pertaining to concealed carry, you could be forgiven for thinking that anyone who writes about it thinks that armed robbers, muggers and the like are the most likely threat a person will face. That even includes the guy writing these words you’re currently reading. |

The advent of the polymer-framed, striker-fired automatic pistol brought about profound changes in the way handgunners go about things. No worries, I’m not here to bash these guns – there’s been plenty of that. As a matter of fact, though it took me a while, I’m a fan of these firearms and have had great success with many different models of striker-fired pistols. I’ve carried them extensively as a lawman and a civilian, with great success.. |

We’re working on a “build” PCC carbine in 9 mm, and we’ve arrived at a fairly crucial choice—how we’ll drive the carbine by selecting a recoil spring and buffer system. As designed, Stoner-pattern rifles use rotating lugs and a weighted buffer/spring system to hold the action closed until after the projectile passes the gas port juuuuust prior to leaving the barrel. Gas pressure feeds back to unlock the lugs on the rotating bolt, and subsequently drives the bolt/carrier assembly rearward to eject the spent cartridge. |

Most West Texans believe in God and guns — and for good reason. As a devout Christian and proud gun-owner, I’m unashamed in sharing those beliefs. The Framers of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution wisely ensured that this notion would forever be a part of supreme law of our land. Years before the Second Amendment was ratified, Thomas Jefferson, in drafting the Declaration of Independence, proclaimed that we are endowed by God with certain unalienable rights, including our life, our liberty and our pursuit of happiness.

To some it’s a lost art and talent that requires more skill than any other shooting sport today. To others, it represents a welcome, simpler time. Either way there are many options for people who enjoy firing a muzzleloader and living the lifestyle that accompanies it at the Oakland County Sportsmen’s Club in Clarkston. A muzzleloader is any firearm into which the projectile and usually the propellant charge is loaded from the muzzle of the gun. The term applies to both rifled and smoothbore type muzzleloaders, and may also refer to the marksman who specializes in the shooting of such firearms. |

Jennifer Padilla has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute meth in return for a two-year federal prison sentence. If a federal judge accepts the plea deal, the 39-year-old mother of five could be free in less than a year because of the 13 months she’s already spent in the Santa Fe County jail. Friday’s proposed sentence represents a significant reduction from the 10 or more years Padilla was facing behind bars. |
