In this fifth installment of "The Men and Guns of the Pacific," the ARTV crew heads to Iwo Jima. When U.S. forces sought to capture an advanced airfield where shorter-range American fighters could be based, Iwo Jima was the only island that made sense, and it was only eight square miles long. The Battle of Iwo Jima lasted 36 gruesome days with more than 6,800 Americans paying the ultimate sacrifice. It is also a significant point in Marine Corps history. |

Sometimes I wonder whether folks working at a gun manufacturer know the impact of their decisions beforehand. I spent a little time at a couple of gun manufacturers many years ago. A couple of guys clearly dreampt of being the next John Moses Browning but most just liked the idea of working where guns were being made. |

There are plenty of complaints hunters make about public land. Usually those complaints boil down to: 1) it's too crowded; 2) there's not enough game. But not all public land is created equally. For every grumbling grievance about public land, there's a story that's just the opposite. Public hunting land grows stories of adventure, success, conservation, and tradition. We've captured four of those stories to help you to hike in just a little deeper, appreciate the challenge, and hopefully, bring home a story of your own this fall. |

The National Rifle Association endorsed Brian Kemp as the only candidate for governor “who can be trusted to protect our constitutional right to self-defense,” months after spurning him for another Republican rival. The NRA had earlier backed Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle in the GOP primary, triggered by his decision to oppose a jet-fuel tax break aggressively sought by Delta shortly after the Atlanta-based airline severed a marketing relationship with the NRA. |

Gun prohibitionists behind Initiative 1639 in Washington State have apparently come clean with the Seattle Times, as that newspaper reported over the weekend that if the 30-page measure passes, “Washington’s firearms laws would be among the strictest in the country.”
Perhaps by no coincidence, a new group has popped out of the woodwork that calls itself “End The NRA.” People may donate to this movement via something called “ActBlue,” which also is a fund-raising group that supports Democrat candidates. ActBlue has appeared prominently on the Federal Elections Commission reports of at least one Democrat congressional candidate in Washington State. |

A campaign by New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo to crack down on the National Rifle Association and similar groups is facing its first big legal test, with a federal judge expected to decide soon whether to allow a challenge to go forward. Cuomo’s administration has asked Judge Thomas McAvoy of the U.S. Northern District of New York to throw out a First Amendment lawsuit by the NRA that claims the policy restricting financial activity with pro-gun organizations amounts to viewpoint discrimination. |

Savage is pleased to take micro rimfire rifle performance to new heights with the new Rascal FV-SR (Suppressor Ready), Rascal Target and Rascal Target XP. Shipments of these firearms have been delivered to dealers. The Rascal FV-SR enhances accuracy with a heavy barrel featuring a threaded (1/2-28) muzzle. Like the original Rascal, the single-shot rifle cocks by lifting the bolt and unloads easily—without pulling the trigger. The design also builds superior shooting skills thanks to full-size rifle features, including a peep sight, tough synthetic stock and Savage’s user-adjustable Accu-Trigger system. The two new suppressor-ready Rascal models are available in pink or black. |

Make no mistake. This election is about your Second Amendment … your guns … your freedom. A recent front-page headline in The Wall Street Journal spelled it out: It was under the headline, “For Democrats, Guns Are New Litmus Test.” As the article noted, “Democrats running for Congress in 2018 are pushing a muscular gun control agenda that represents a wholesale repositioning on the hot-button issue. In this year’s midterm election, gun control has become a [Democratic] Party litmus test from which few dissent, alongside abortion rights and support for same-sex marriage.” |

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has signed two executive orders intended to improve controls on gun buyers in the state. The Republican governor signed the orders Monday in the wake of inaction by the GOP-controlled Legislature on recommendations of his bipartisan working group on gun issues. The first order permanently establishes a compliance working group to keep trying to close gaps in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, or NICS. The second establishes emergency rules requiring law enforcement agencies around the state to upload protection orders and warrants into the statewide law enforcement database.

State-level and national gun rights organizations confirmed today that they are unified in opposition to a sweeping Washington State gun control initiative that would strip young adults of their Second Amendment rights while creating a registry of gun owners, mandating a 10-day waiting period and signing away medical history privacy rights just to purchase a firearm. |

Every day, actually every hour, animal-rights extremists, and supposedly well-meaning but ill-informed people in the United States and across the globe, are working to end hunting. They rely on emotion and misdirection to confuse average citizens into supporting their cause. Articles, opinion pieces and editorials in local, national and even international outlets confuse hunting with poaching; demonize hunters; blame hunters for wildlife population declines; and make the false claim that there are no limitations on hunting whatsoever. |

In an earlier Campus Safety article addressing the debate about permitting concealed carry on campus in the wake of active shooter incidents, I argued it is a bad idea. My position against allowing citizens to carry guns on campus came as a surprise to many friends and colleagues because I am the quintessential “gun guy.” I’m an NRA member, Second Amendment supporter and veteran firearms instructor who owns more guns than my wife has shoes. |

In Congress this week, the safety of our families is at stake. Not just if the Senate decides to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the highest court of the land, but also if the Department of Education decides to use federal funding from the Every Student Succeeds Act to arm teachers with guns, which will likely be considered during the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee hearing on Tuesday. |

When Hurricane Florence made landfall it stripped some areas of all traditional means of communications, leaving residents without any means of requesting help, even after first responders could respond—a situation that put law-abiding citizens who don’t exercise their Second Amendment rights at the mercy of criminals who view disaster as opportunity. |
