"Although council members could not cite any crimes committed in L.A. involving the so-called "sniper" rifles, they said their unanimous action Tuesday--ordering legal language to outlaw the weapons--would prevent attacks on people and the city's infrastructure."

OCALA — "An Ocala man shot a sheriff's deputy in both kneecaps Tuesday morning as the SWAT team tried to serve a search warrant on a mobile home, according to sheriff's officials."
"Brett Harry Carlson, 30, shot SWAT team member Mike Rolls twice in the right kneecap and once in the left kneecap shortly after 3 a.m., according to deputies. Agents with the Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit, along with members of the SWAT team, went to 1726 N.W. County Road 326 to serve a search warrant for suspected drug activity."
"Carlson, who authorities said has a long criminal background in Florida, apologized for shooting the deputy Tuesday, noting he didn't know the deputies outside the home were officers."

New York City bans handguns, but the state can't manage to keep firearms out of prisons? ------- "New York State corrections officers are asking the state for more manpower after illegal weapons were found in three prisons last week, including parts of a crude firearm found at the Fishkill Correctional Facility in Beacon."
"On Friday, officers at Fishkill caught an inmate trying to fashion a 'zip gun' out of brass tubing, a sharpened nail to be used as a firing pin, and a .380-caliber bullet. Corrections officers said the inmate had prior experience in the military and managed to sneak the components into the prison by stashing them inside a personal radio. Charges against the inmate are pending."
"Earlier in the week, corrections officers had found a small cache of makeshift shanks and other weapons at a prison in western New York. Two days later, officers found about 200 rods, used in chain-link fences, in an inmate's housing unit at another facility in western New York." |

The Violence Policy Center (VPC) today released a new study revealing that the number of gun dealers has dropped by more than 181,000 since 1994. The study found that the number of holders of Type 1 Federal Firearms Licenses (FFLs) plummeted 74 percent from 245,628 in January 1994 to 63,881 in April 2002 -- a decrease of 181,747. (The Type 1 FFL is the basic federal license required to sell guns in America.)
