"Journal of the Senate of the United States of America"

"WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 1789."

"'...On motion to amend article the fifth, by inserting these words, 'for the common defence,' next to the words 'bear arms:'"

"'It passed in the negative.'"

"'On motion to strike out of this article, line the second, these words, 'the best,' and insert in lieu thereof 'necessary to the:'"

"'It passed in the affirmative.'"

"'On motion ... to amend the article to read as follows: 'A well regulated militia being the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.'"

"'It passed in the affirmative....'"

"Well now, THAT answers some questions, DOESN'T IT? Good-bye 'collective rights' theory!"

"A new, ultra-precise laser technology can engrave the entire alphabet on the tip of a ballpoint pen. It's called microstamping, and it's got the attention of some law enforcement officials, intrigued by its potential use in solving gun crimes."

"'This could take ballistics to a whole new level,' said New Jersey State Police Capt. Al Della Fave. 'Any type of technology that helps law enforcement in terms of identification of a weapon used in a crime is going to be tremendously helpful.'" ...

"In response to the recent Sixth District Appellate Court decision upholding firearm bans in city parks, I humbly present what the ramifications are to the citizens of Toledo: the loss of their right to self-defense and potentially the lives of their children."

"A Sept. 19 article ... reported that a 33-year-old man was finally arrested after being sought by police. His alleged crime? Sexual assault of a 5-year-old girl. Where was he apprehended? In a city park."

"... I take the safety of my family very seriously. That is why I have passed a rigorous background check, been fingerprinted, and received training in the safe operation and legal ramifications of carrying a handgun for self defense by state-approved instructors." ...

"Mayor Bloomberg has hit the bull's-eye again in his war on gun trafficking, scoring legal settlements with three more out-of-state dealers whose lax sales procedures have made it all too easy for the city's criminals to get their hands on deadly weapons." ...

"Predictably, NRA types are running to Washington for sanctuary from such assaults. Faster than a speeding bullet, House Republicans plan today to pass a bill shielding unscrupulous gun dealers - of the same ilk targeted by Bloomberg's lawsuits - from prosecution by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives. ..." ...
-------

KABA Note: If there is "just plain smoking-gun evidence" against these dealers, why hasn't Mayor Mike turned it over to the Feds? Perhaps he is afraid that 'his' evidence would show multiple felonies and RICO style crimes committed by him and his cronies?

"Picnic basket full of goodies. Check."

"Bug spray. Check."

"Handgun. Check."

"The thought of park visitors packing heat among the picnickers will surely be alarming to those who favor strong gun control measures. And for the NRA and its devoted followers, this reinforces their constitutional right to bear arms. (Although we doubt the Founding Fathers had state parks in mind when drafting the Second Amendment.)" ...

"Brace yourselves, it looks as though this week the National Rifle Association (NRA) has won another victory in the state of Indiana. People are now allowed to bring their handguns with them in state parks. 'Pack a picnic—or a gun,' said the headline of the Indianapolis Star. I am so disturbed by this, but I am also really not suprised."

"Why are we, as Americans, so attached to our right to bear arms? Why do we love our guns so much in this country? Why do we want to be able to carry them around with us everywhere we go? Doesn’t this just increase the temptation to use them, or increase the frequency of accidentally shooting one off?"

"I remember as a little child having a cap gun that made popping sounds. I also remembered the cap gun as being small and a different color besides black. Most of them were orange or an attractive color."

"Philadelphia's gun violence is prompting a rally in Harrisburg Tuesday. Hundreds are expected to attend to demand tougher gun laws." ...

"Limiting hand guns sales to one a month, banning military assault type weapons, and requiring owners of guns that are lost or stolen to report them within 24 hours, is just a small list of a long list of a bill before the Pennsylvania legislator."

"There is a special meeting session Tuesday to discuss hand gun control." ...

"From the pistol range, where legally-owned guns are used in a legal way to the mean streets of Philadelphia where illegal guns are to often used in illegal acts, hand guns are the targets of Philadelphia-based state lawmakers in Harrisburg." ...

Submitter's Note: The antis are being unusually frank this week. In Maryland they have started pressing to ban all long guns, and here they admit they want to 'regulate' (i.e. incrementally ban) all handguns, even the 'legal' ones.

"The example illustrating 'violence involving guns' is the 16-year-old who killed 10 people at a high school. The weapons he used were stolen from his grandfather, a police officer. How would gun control have changed that? He opened fire as he entered the school, killing an unarmed security guard. If that security guard had possessed a gun, there might be only two people dead.  QUOTES TO REMEMBER
You are bound to meet misfortune if you are unarmed because, among other reasons, people despise you....There is simply no comparison between a man who is armed and one who is not. It is unreasonable to expect that an armed man should obey one who is unarmed, or that an unarmed man should remain safe and secure when his servants are armed. In the latter case, there will be suspicion on the one hand and contempt on the other, making cooperation impossible. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."
