Working on campus in a major city comes with some additional challenges, such as traffic, parking and finding a suitable place to live. However, an urban campus can also be a dangerous one. UWT has most of the same criminal incidents as other urban universities: break-ins, vehicle thefts and assault being some of the more common ones. Sexual assault and rape especially catch our eyes when we see it being addressed on social media or in news publications.

A state lawmaker has proposed a bill that would allow Kentuckians to carry concealed firearms without a license. The legislation would allow people aged 21 or older to carry concealed deadly weapons anywhere already allowed for license-holders. Rep. Wesley Morgan, a Republican from Richmond and former agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said he proposed the bill because he thinks it would bring state law more in line with the Second Amendment.

It’s no longer the size of the neighborhood that matters, but how guns are discharged that county officials say they will try to regulate when it comes to firing weapons on private property. Anyone who carelessly or recklessly discharges a weapon anywhere in unincorporated Horry County while disregarding the safety of life or property would face jail and a fine, according to an ordinance under consideration by the county.

In a wildly sensationalist screed published September 15, the Washington Post burnished its anti-gun agenda without regard to truth. In its “Children Under Fire” piece, the Post seemed to rely on emotional appeals in order to make its point: Youngsters are being shot at a terrible rate and something must be done! The reader is left to imagine just what must be done, but it’s likely to have little to do with supporting the Second Amendment.

Watching movie characters use guns may not necessarily make kids more likely to pick up a weapon themselves, but it may mean children who play with guns are more apt to fire them, a new experiment suggests. For the experiment, researchers had children watch a 20-minute clip from the PG-rated films “The Rocketeer” or “National Treasure.” The kids were randomly assigned to watch either an unedited version of the clip, or a version in which scenes showing guns were edited out but the action and narrative of the film were not altered.

After an extended period without offering a pistol of any kind, Remington returned to the handgun market in a big way. Since 2010, “Big Green” has been churning out new handguns, including various models of the 1911-style R1, the compact R51 and the pocket-size RM380—with some notable missteps along the way. Until recently, however, Remington was still missing a staple of modern handguns: the full-size, polymer-frame, striker-fired 9 mm. Since the introduction of the Glock G17 in the 1980s, most of the major gun companies have been innovating by building upon this concept.

It was a fairly peaceful Saturday afternoon in the old West town. The dusty gravel street had a few people meandering about between the print shop, the general store and the doctor’s office. Others stood idly on the wooden sidewalks. Suddenly off near the saloon, a couple of drunks began shouting and waving their guns between swigs from the whiskey bottle they’d been passing back and forth. A sheriff’s deputy tried to reason with them a little, but everybody knew what was going to happen. One sot took aim at the deputy, and a few bangs later, both lay dead in the street, the bottle leaking next to the bodies.

Gun control has been a hot topic in recent years. It’s the debate between raising enforcement laws or restricting the amount and type of guns a person in the United States can own. Statistics show that, in recent years, firearms are responsible for most of the deaths in the nation. That includes everything from homicides and suicides to accidents. In 2013, the highest recorded number of gun-related deaths in the United States was 33,636.

Under most circumstances, a new trailer or two going up in Georgia is neither uncommon nor a cause for concern. But a group of trailers and a new 50,000 sq.-ft. building built in Columbus, Ga., should make the firearm industry pay attention. Because those trailers and that new building belong to a subsidiary of German manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH, and the sign on the door reads “HK.”
