If I had written this article just a few years ago, or even one year ago, I would have probably started by saying that pistol optics would be the way of the future. It looks like the future is now, and everyone and their neighbor has a red dot on their pistol. Contrary to popular belief, simply throwing a red dot on your handgun and pointing it at your target isn’t going to improve your shooting and make you the next John Wick. However, with the appropriate fundamentals and training, you can become a faster and more accurate shooter.

Professional gun control advocates have always had a seat at the table in the Biden White House. Now, however, they will not only sit at the table but determine its menu, set it, and compile the guest list for it. This comes under a new initiative launched by Joe Biden last Friday to establish an Office of Gun Violence Prevention, to be overseen by none other than Kamala Harris. But while the effort is supposedly being run by the White House “to reduce gun violence,” its real purpose is to employ professional gun control advocates and amplify their propaganda and agenda with taxpayer dollars.

Welcome to today’s Photo of the Day! Here we have the unique Whitney-Howard chambered in a rimfire cartridge. The Whitney-Howard rifle was a really cool lever-action design dreamed up by the Howard brothers and patented in the 1860s. When Whitneyville Armory started making them from 1866-1870, they produced less than 1700 total. The rifle versions in .44 rimfire had this funky cylindrical breech that fit everything in a tube. The army tested them in 1867 but ultimately passed. This rifle just couldn’t compete with guns like the Henry and Spencer when the Civil War left behind tons of surplus. It was a totally unique silhouette housing some innovative mechanics inside. You don’t see many guns with the lever action all enclosed like that.

By now, you’d have to be living in a cave (digital or otherwise) to not know about the Taurus Judge revolver. Capable of firing both 2.5-inch, .410-bore shotshells and .45 Colt ammunition, it has been one of the best-selling firearms in Taurus’ portfolio since its introduction in 2006. To most experts, it has been more of an afternoon plinking and “Hey, check this out” among friends (which, of course, is entirely acceptable) pistol, but sales don’t lie. With the addition of Taurus’ new Executive suite of upgrades, though, I believe there is a serious self-defense mission that can be admirably fulfilled with this latest entry to the manufacturer’s popular line of versatile models of Judge wheelguns.

Here in the opening quarter of the 21st century, we are blessed to have access to virtually all the 19th century single-action percussion revolvers produced by Remington and Colt. These come from such Italian firms as Pietta and Uberti now, and in the past from others such as Armi San Marcos and Armi Jaeger. My very first example in the late 1950s/early 1960s actually came from Belgium via Navy Arms. It was a Remington New Model Army, now mostly referred to as the Remington 1858 by the manufacturers. Yes, I wish I still had that one

Many big game hunters and long range shooters have battled over which rifle cartridge to buy for their next hunting rifle. More often than not, the 338 Lapua Magnum and 308 Winchester come up in the discussion. So, if you like long range shooting, and I really mean LONG range, then it’s high time we pulled the trigger on these two sniper rifle staples.

When I think about the most iconic rifle cartridges of World War II, my mind immediately goes to the American 30-06 Springfield and the Russian 7.62x54R. The 303 British and 8mm Mauser played a critical role in that conflict as well, but if I had to choose two cartridges that won the European theater, the 30-06 and 7.62x54R would be my picks.
