An 85-year-old man was hospitalized with severe injuries after allegedly shooting and killing his son in what authorities believe was an act of self-defense during a violent domestic incident Monday night.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported domestic disturbance around 9 p.m. at a residence on County Road 214 in the Langtown Community. Upon arrival, deputies discovered the body of 40-year-old Jeffrey Blake Darnell in the front yard. Inside the home, they found the elderly homeowner suffering from extensive injuries reportedly inflicted during a physical altercation with Darnell. |

The argument that Charlie Kirk makes, and the argument made by the Founding Fathers, is in fact the correct one. Americans have the right to bear arms because we have the right to possess a physical check against a tyrannical government. In the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, the Founding Fathers were careful to create a constitution that would prevent their new government from devolving into the tyranny they had escaped under the British. An armed citizenry is a blunt solution to this problem. |

Florida’s first Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday is still underway, and it will last through the end of the year.
The holiday, officially listed by the Florida Department of Revenue as the “Hunting, Fishing and Camping Sales Tax Holiday,” suspends sales taxes on firearms, ammunition, and other supplies. That means Floridians can shop for hunting, fishing, and camping gear tax-free through Dec. 31.
There are a few limits. The holiday does not apply to the rental or repair of any of the qualifying items. |

The essence of the case is that the Supreme Court has made clear that the "Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms..." Further, in Heller, the Supreme Court stated the Second Amendment protects weapons that are "'in common use at the time' for lawful purposes like self-defense" and that weapons "typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes" are within the scope of the Second Amendment.
Despite this, the Federal Switchblade Act broadly restricts, or outright bans in over one-third of the U.S., a huge category of such bearable arms that are in common use, in direct violation of the Second Amendment. |

Illinois is trying to outpace California and New York in anti–Second Amendment legislation. In 2023, the state passed HB 5471, often referred to as the Protect Illinois Communities Act (PICA), banning semi-automatic rifles, common handguns, and nearly half of all magazines in the U.S.
Second Amendment defenders in Illinois rose to the challenge, resulting in a series of cases consolidated under Barnett v. Raoul, which are being argued before the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals as of the writing of this email. |

The 9th Circuit's decision in United States v. Metcalf does not address the latter issue. But two members of the three-judge panel concluded that Watters should have dismissed Metcalf's indictment because his understanding of "licensed" was plausible.
"The parties do not dispute that Metcalf holds a license pursuant to Montana Code section 45-8-360," Judge Lawrence VanDyke, a Donald Trump appointee, notes in an opinion joined by Judge John B. Owens, who was nominated by Barack Obama. "Instead, they dispute whether Montana's procedure for issuing this license complied with the [GFSZA's] requirements." |

In Utah, as in 29 other states, citizens may carry concealed firearms without a permit. This means young adults can freely bring guns onto school campuses—no background checks, no restrictions. Furthermore, Utah has no “red flag” laws, leaving no mechanism to disarm suspicious or unstable individuals before tragedy strikes. These freedoms create an environment primed for violence. So is it really any surprise that such a tragedy took place? I’d argue not. |

"Right now (after the appeals court ruling on open carry), in a number of places, the prohibited places don't technically apply," Sean Caranna, executive director of the gun rights group Florida Carry Inc., told The News Service of Florida on Sept. 19. "There is going to be a brief period of time here where obviously the statutes have not caught up to the court rulings, and we're advising that sometimes discretion is the better part of valor and people should abide by the current set of places that are prohibited ... when it comes to all forms of carry."
Currently, these are the locations where there are state and federal bans on open and concealed carry: |

Some activists devoted to ending gun violence had to look twice at the source of the ads for firearms training that flashed on their computer screens. Everytown for Gun Safety, which has made its name advocating for stricter gun laws and preventing violence, is now offering courses for gun owners.
Organizers say the on-demand or Zoom-style sessions are aimed at responsibility and safety without any undertones of salesmanship.
Gun-rights groups reacted to the launch with derision for the newcomer to a space flooded with concealed carry and pistol programs run by the National Rifle Association and other groups. |

A new bill introduced in Ohio would allow lawmakers and elected officials with a concealed carry permit to bring guns into government buildings.
House Bill 460 was introduced earlier this month by Reps. Thaddeus Claggett (R-Licking County) and Bernard Willis (R-Springfield.)
If passed, the bill would allow “statewide elected officials, judges, and magistrates to carry a concealed handgun in a government facility of the state or a political subdivision.”
While the bill would require public officials to obtain a concealed carry permit to carry guns into government buildings, a permit is not required to own a gun in Ohio. |

Sheriff Apple acknowledged the mixed feelings surrounding gun buybacks, stating, "I myself struggle with gun buyback. Very rarely do I get a gun that was used in a crime, and we have recovered a couple of stolen guns over the years, but not in big numbers. But again, the part that makes me keep doing this is the issue of removing the opportunity for somebody to get into a house and take a gun that’s lying around."

While many self-defense shootings occur when a victim is attacked by a stranger, it’s not unusual for both the attacker and the defender to be family members, acquaintances or even friends. A recent shooting in Fresno, California, involving a former professional soccer player, who says he was defending himself, has resulted in no charges being filed.
According to a report at nbcbayarea.com, for San Jose Earthquake player and soccer coach David Gold said he acted in self-defense when he shot and killed Ronald Morris, a friend for half a century, on September 8 at his home. |

The Second Amendment Foundation and its partners in a federal civil rights lawsuit against the Washington State Attorney General’s office and former AG—now governor—Bob Ferguson announced Wednesday that the AG’s office has signed an agreement ending a three-year investigation which revealed no wrongdoing by SAF or its personnel, in exchange for ending the lawsuit.
The announcement came just days before SAF will co-host the 40th annual Gun Rights Policy Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Sept. 26-28 conference will draw hundreds of Second Amendment activists, scholars, legal experts and representatives from virtually every major gun rights organization in the country. |

Suicide is a top cause of death among adolescents in the United States — second for children ages 10 to 14 and third among those 15 to 19.
These adolescents most often use firearms to end their lives. For kids ages 10 to 17, the guns are 10 times more likely to be owned by parents who store them unlocked and loaded, according to new research that lead author Dr. Sofia Chaudhary is presenting Sunday at the American Academy of Pediatrics 2025 National Conference and Exhibition in Denver.
The research hasn’t been peer-reviewed but is consistent with previous studies showing the well-established relationship between home firearms and suicide, said Dr. Rebecca Berry... |

The challenge that toppled Florida’s prohibition on open carry began with Stanley McDaniels, who was arrested and convicted for openly carrying a holstered handgun.
On September 10, 2025, the First District Court of Appeal held that Florida’s ban in § 790.053 violates the Second Amendment under the Supreme Court’s Bruen standard—because the State failed to show any enduring historical tradition that would justify a broad prohibition on carrying firearms openly.
In short: the court said the right to “bear” arms includes the right to carry them openly, and Florida’s blanket ban can’t stand. |

There are frequently asked questions about this new open carry law in Florida and where you can go and where you can’t go… i can tell you that parks like this one will allow it.
Open carry is now allowed in most public places— but with a few exceptions. This went into effect Thursday
One local resident, Greg Kinser, said he’s been a gun owner for almost his entire life.
“it’s about time.” Kinser said.
“Freedom is scary, you have to learn to deal with it,” Kinser said. “We shouldn’t have to ask the government to protect ourselves.” |

The mere act of displaying a gun can be seen as an act of aggression, an implied threat. That’s why Florida made it illegal to walk around with a handgun on your hip, or a semiautomatic rifle slung over your shoulder.
The gun owner might not see anything sinister in their display, but for many, the sight of a weapon evokes images we’ve had to imagine too many times already — teachers shielding children with their bodies against a killer stalking their halls; young people dancing in the early-morning hours until they realized they were hearing gunshots instead of drumbeats; people happily gathered in a restaurant to compete in video games until a gunman opened fire. |
