Ohio lawmakers are advancing legislation that would allow elected officials, judges, and magistrates to carry concealed firearms into government buildings, a move that’s raising both support and criticism.

House Bill 460, introduced on September 17 by Reps. Thaddeus Claggett (R-Licking County) and Bernard Willis (R-Springfield), would change existing law to let certain public officials bring a concealed firearm into places like the Statehouse, courthouses, and city halls. To qualify, individuals must possess a valid Ohio concealed carry permit and show photo identification verifying their public office.

The 36-year-old claimed that Figueroa had exited his car and threatened him with a black knife.

The standoff quickly escalated into a physical fight.

Figueroa said that at some point the adversary hit Javier in the face, which is when Figueroa entered his car and tried hitting the man.

Although he reportedly struck him with the vehicle, he also ran over Javier, according to KTVK-TV in Phoenix.

Police questioned the 36-year-old and let him go, arresting and detaining Figueroa only.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry was promoting the state's Saturday, Sept. 26, free National Hunting and Fishing Day events while on his own wildlife adventure with friends in the Sportsman's Paradise.

"I'm talking to you now while we're standing in a rice field hunting teal in Gueydan," Landry said Friday morning in an interview with USA Today Network. "Hunting and fishing and protecting the Second Amendment are all important traditions in Louisiana that should be celebrated."

Gottlieb expressed his dissatisfaction with the investigation initiated by Bob Ferguson, describing it as an effort to “discredit our work on behalf of gun owners and the Second Amendment.”

“Ferguson’s witch hunt wasted three years of our time and cost us thousands of man hours and more than $200,000. We’re convinced this happened because he is a devoted anti-gun rights politician and we are a national organization whose mission is to protect and defend the Second Amendment,” he added.

A man who was convicted in federal court of firearms violations after menacing neighbors and an elementary school in Billings by carrying guns and patrolling the neighborhood has had his conviction overturned in a split decision by the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

In a ruling earlier this week, the panel of three appellate judges said that Gabriel Metcalf’s conviction should be overturned because he offered a plausible interpretation and understanding of federal gun law, even while acknowledging that federal district court judge Susan Watters had a more straightforward and traditional definition of the law.

Hamlin’s remarks covered recent Supreme Court victories for the NRA, including the landmark New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen decision, which affirmed the constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense.

As of Thursday, you can openly carry firearms in Florida, but gun owners should be aware that the new law comes with some stipulations.

A state appeals court struck down the state's open carry ban on Sept. 10, saying it violated the Second Amendment. According to the court's ruling, the law officially took effect Sept. 25, after the state did not appeal within 15 days.

Chris Steinocher, the President and CEO of the St. Pete Area Chamber of Commerce, is urging businesses to prepare now.

“I really believe it’s going to create an opportunity for dialogue that’s probably been needed,” Steinocher said Thursday.

His advice to business owners? Be aware that open carry has arrived. You might see people in public places carrying handguns, rifles, and shotguns. Business owners also need to decide whether or not they will allow guns inside their businesses.

A Bend church is holding another event Saturday that gives firearm owners a chance have their guns cut into pieces and turned into garden tools.

The Guns to Gardens event happens this Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Antioch Church, 566 NE Clay Avenue in Bend. The church has hosted several of these in recent years and says it decommissioned 148 guns over its last four events.

The church says trained volunteers follow Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms guidelines to make three specific cuts to the firearm to make it no longer legally a gun. There is no transfer of ownership while the gun is still a gun, the church says. The owner must wait on the property for the process to be completed.

What was once unimaginable has become routine. We have asked generations of students to practice for the possibility of being hunted in their classrooms. In fact, we’ve allowed drills, fear and tragedy to become part of the school experience itself. It is the natural consequence of treating the Second Amendment as more sacred than our children.

But it does not have to be this way. It is not too late. And I say this as a liberal Democrat who also believes deeply in the right to responsible gun ownership. Those two truths can coexist. We can pass commonsense legislation that balances constitutional rights with public safety. We can fund mental health programs.

Domestic violence is not only a threat to its victims, but to the community in general, and certainly the police. Ask any police officer and they’ll tell you that calls to domestic violence incidents are some of the most dangerous.

There are so many murders in America, especially by guns. Political murders, school shootings, random shootings, gang violence, robberies, and the murders of intimate partners, girlfriends, boyfriends, spouses and dates. In Pennsylvania 104 victims of domestic violence were killed this year and there were over 1,500 deaths from domestic violence in our Commonwealth over the past 10 years.

The problem here is that both of these shootings were committed with bolt-action rifles, the very kind of rifles that Murphy and other gun control advocates insist they don’t want to ban. The gun used to kill Kirk is, according to liberal NBC News, “favored by hunters who prize them for their durability, reliability and accuracy” and is “ideal” to “take down medium to large game like deer, elk and even bear.” The gun used in the Dallas ICE shooting was an 8mm variant of the same rifle. These are precisely the kind of hunting rifles that are supposed to be off the table according to gun control advocates.

A 5th District Court judge has dismissed multiple felony charges against a Cedar City motorcyclist accused of shooting a man during a road rage confrontation, ruling the shooting was an act of self-defense.

In a 14-page decision issued Monday, Judge Meb Anderson dismissed one count of felony discharge of a firearm with serious bodily injury and one count of aggravated assault against 47-year-old Jason Bryan Stolworthy.

Those two most serious charges were dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled. Two counts of reckless endangerment were dismissed without prejudice, leaving the option for prosecutors to pursue them again.

Jonathan Portillo-Lopez was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the February 2021 shooting death of Jordan Ibarra-Ortega, 26. At the time of the incident, police said the two got into an argument that led to the shooting.

The new ruling stems from Portillo-Lopez mentioning the victim's criminal history during the trial, which the judge had ruled violated a pretrial order. That meant Portillo-Lopez wasn't permitted get to continue his testimony, including his claim of self-defense.

A district court now reversed the conviction and called for a new trial.

Despite impassioned pleas from kids’ doctors, parents of victims and from Pope Leo XIV, chances appear remote that lawmakers could agree on enough to justify a special session.

The hard political reality

The Democratic governor is up against a hard political reality: the Minnesota Legislature is too evenly divided to pass anything without bipartisan support.

While there’s support for gun restrictions among urban and suburban Democrats, there’s opposition among rural and suburban Republicans to any infringement on the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

 QUOTES TO REMEMBER
A state may not impose a charge for the enjoyment of a right granted by the federal constitution... The power to impose a license tax on the exercise of these freedoms is indeed as potent as the power of censorship which this Court has repeatedly struck down... a person cannot be compelled 'to purchase, through a license fee or a license tax, the privilege freely granted by the constitution.' —MURDOCK V. PENNSYLVANIA 319 US 105 (1942)
