They're "Locking 'Em Up For Kids' Sake" in Lake, Mason and Oceana Counties. All across Michigan, community groups are taking aim at protecting their children from gun injuries, with the help of the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Foundation.

The Foundation has granted more than $100,000 to help organizations statewide.

"Finally, models exist for preventing terrorism on aircraft without arming pilots. One such example is El Al, the Israeli airlines. I have traveled on El Al and was impressed with its security program. While we cannot draw exact parallels between the El Al and the entire U.S. airline industry, we should closely examine all such models and learn from their experience."

Bush administration officials say the president will not support calls in Congress for a creating a national identification card to help combat terrorism.

While some lawmakers in Congress have said they'd like to take a fresh look at the issue, White House spokesman Jimmy Orr said President Bush "is not even considering the idea."
 

Junior ROTC advised to shelve uniforms

For Martin County High School and other Air Force Junior ROTC programs throughout the nation, uniforms are out of the question.

The program received instructions in a memo that said,

"Neither instructors nor cadets should wear the Air Force uniform in public until further notice. We are also advising against public activities or events that clearly identify your students as members of a military organization."

In the wake of the World Trade Center disaster, we certainly need defensive measures to prevent another occurrence and to ensure the safety of air travel, as well as the offensive measures already initiated by President Bush. But confiscating pocket knives and sewing scissors from little old ladies will do nothing to fill the now-empty planes with confident passengers.

"By all accounts, it looks like a cartoon bomb: sticks of dynamite attached by colorful wires to an alarm clock, stuffed in a carry-on bag.

At least 36 times since 1996, this type of bomb was carried undetected past airline security at airports in California."

While refusing to respond to specifics about the attack or the ongoing investigation, Reno said she agrees with expanded wiretapping authority for law enforcement pursuing terrorist cells, if handled appropriately.

If privacy rights are going to be sacrificed, Reno said, law enforcement must be sure it is preventing a crime and that measures taken will actually protect people.

One federal law enforcement official and firearms expert said stun guns are more commonly used to control a person who is already contained in some way.

"That's fine if you have a passenger who is unruly because of too many Bloody Marys," he said, but in the case of the Sept. 11 hijackings, "These guys were trained to strong arm flight attendants in an instant. They were on a suicide mission."

The decision came at an emergency meeting that was called after computer engineering professor Sami Al-Arian appeared on FOX News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" late Wednesday and was questioned about his links to known terrorists.

Al-Arian rallied the crowd with shouts of "death to Israel." Al-Arian responded he was making a political statement regarding the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and what he considers Israeli oppression, not advocating deaths of people.

The riots came after police officer After a night of relative calm, the mayor ended a two-night citywide curfew Friday morning and urged residents to "Go out and go to dinner. ... Go have fun."

Stephen Roach shot Timothy Thomas, 19, on April 7 as the black man fled Roach and other officers. Thomas was wanted on 14 misdemeanor warrants, including driving without a license and previously fleeing police.

U.S. Ambassador Robert Gelbard criticized Indonesia's security forces for not moving against extremists who have threatened to attack the embassy and kill Americans, including himself.

The State Department warned Americans to stay away from Indonesia.
