"Needing information on airline passengers for a test of the government's new computerized screening system, the Transportation Security Administration, rebuffed by JetBlue Airways, is looking for a substitute that can provide it, the agency's administrator said today."

"But the official, Adm. James M. Loy, said that because no one airline wanted to single itself out as the provider, he hoped to get the data from the industry as a whole. And if he cannot get the airlines' cooperation, he said, he will simply order them to turn over the information."

Study backs hidden guns against crime

"For Lynn Wachtmann, Ohio’s failure to adopt a law allowing law-abiding citizens to carry concealed handguns can be measured in flesh and blood, and the pain of crime victims."

" 'It’s heart-wrenching to see the number of Ohioans who are being victimized while some continue to play politics,' said Mr. Wachtmann, a Republican state senator from Napoleon."

"Mr. Wachtmann partially based his statement on research by David Mustard, an associate professor of economics at the University of Georgia. A gun rights group, Ohioans for Concealed Carry, hired Mr. Mustard to estimate what would happen if Ohio becomes the 46th state with a 'conceal carry' law."

"The Senate seems close to a vote on final approval of the egregious House bill that would grant the gun-making industry unprecedented protection from liability suits by state and local governments and victims of gun violence. Custom-tailored for the donation-rich gun lobby, the bill was strategically delayed during the sniper murders last year around Washington. Now it is moving again, and some Democrats who in the past might have helped to derail it are wavering, frightened by polls that show gun control as a losing issue in some swing states. G.O.P. leaders also are angling to let the federal assault weapon ban expire next year, and to protect the lethal loophole that exempts weapon sales at gun shows from background checks."

"Thanks for the lesson -- there's nothing like being taught by those without a clue on the subject."

"But as is typical, The Sun's editorial does not discuss the fact that the 'assault-style' weapons it hates and denounces are either already effectively banned from consumer ownership by federal law -- i.e., fully automatic 'machine guns' -- or not functionally different from other, legal weapons that have at least as much 'power.' "A recent United Nations study estimates there are about half a million small arms in Kosovo, primarily illegal weapons held by civilians. In a province of 2 million people, almost every family is armed - a legacy of ethnic strife here and a threat to efforts to stabilize the province."

"Kosovo was flooded with weapons in 1997 after rioters looted military armories in neighboring Albania. Many of the pilfered arms went to the Kosovo Liberation Army, which was waging a guerrilla war against Serb rule over this primarily ethnic- Albanian province. In return, Serbian security forces issued machine guns to Serb paramilitaries and ordinary farmers alike. The conflict culminated in a NATO bombing campaign in 1999 that forced Serb soldiers to leave and put the province under UN administration."

"According to Murray, when the children viewed the violent clips, the amygdala on the right side of the brain, which senses danger and prepares to react to it, lit up.

In addition, the right posterior cingulate of the brain, which is reserved for long-term memory of important or traumatic events, also showed activity.

Murray said the findings suggest that children who watch violent television shows are more likely to treat others in an aggressive manner, become less sensitive to suffering, and tend to be more fearful of the world around them."

"The starting point for any person-to-person gun dealing should be knowledge of the law. The Gun Control Act of 1968 should be your starting point. I believe this law and its successors provide classic examples of what were possibly good intentions run amok. I'm consistently 'denied' for three days, without explanation, almost every time I get a 'loaner' gun for a story. The fact that I have a perfectly clean lifetime legal slate seemingly makes no difference whatsoever. But the point is you need to know the gun laws and follow them."

"Cincinnati private investigator Chuck Klein, who lost on Wednesday when the court rejected his lawsuit challenging Ohio's ban, said concealed-carry advocates will seek a bill allowing the hidden guns or will lobby for passage of a state constitutional amendment."

"Plaintiffs also are considering asking the Ohio Supreme Court to reconsider its ruling or starting a new court challenge to Ohio's ban, Klein said."
