"'What did you say?'"

"'Huh?'"

"'Say again?'"

"'Did you hear me?'"

"Those may be the most common phrases heard around rifle ranges, campfires and deer camps throughout Texas this month as hunters prepare for another hunting season."

"Old shooters can't hear. It's one of the laws of nature -- or is it?"

"There was once an assumption that all shooters would eventually lose some hearing. We just accepted a 'tin ear' as the price we paid for a dedication to the sport."

"The tragedy is that hearing loss is almost always preventable. Shooting sports are loud. Rifles bellow, shotguns boom and pistols blast. But few nimrods preparing for the season take time to protect themselves from the deafening roar." ...

And if 'silencers' weren't effectively banned, then this would be significantly less of a problem.

"An ever-increasing supply of neat doubles and over/unders have come to market at prices from affordable to laughable."

"But what gauge? The 28 gauges are easy to carry and don't punch me, but they carry only a small charge of shot; and while great on grouse, they may be marginal for pheasant and no choice for waterfowl."

"The 12 gauge is perhaps the most versatile chambering, and you can buy (or load) charges of less than an ounce of shot up to 13/4 ounce in standard 23/4-inch chambering."

"But what about the 16 gauge, until the 1950s the darling of upland hunters? Oddly enough, as doubles are again gaining ground, the 16 gauge is enjoying a resurgence, says Bill Hanus, a pioneer in that rebirth." ...

... "In 2000, presidential candidate George W. Bush pledged to renew the ban. Before the expiration, however, he said he would do so only if the Republican-led Senate and House sent him the enabling legislation ..."

"Not coincidentally, I'm sure, the National Rifle Association had not made its expected announcement of support for President Bush as of Sept. 13."

"Although the Gun Control Act of 1968 prohibits the import of guns not specifically designed for sporting purposes, crimes committed with assault weapons were increasing in 1989. President George H.W. Bush took action by banning certain imported assault weapons. That year alone, the number of imported assault weapons traced to crime dropped by 45 percent." ...
-------

KABA Notes:

A) The BATFE has repeatedly said that gun traces have no relation to criminal gun use.

2) There is a growing body of evidence indicating that the Gun Control Act of 1968 was almost certainly based on the Nazi Weapons Law of 1938.

"Fall in New Hampshire brings to mind foliage, the unique seasonal beauty New Englanders are privy to. There is apple picking, pumpkin carving and a plethora of autumn activities. But what many are waiting for is hunting season, a historical pastime that is passed down through generations, and this year there may be a few more rifles scoping for game than there has been in the past decade." ...

"Other people in the outdoors community feel the exact opposite of Pekins. 'I am glad that this phony law has finally sunsetted,' expressed Ronald Thomas, a private citizen, gun owner, hunter, NRA instructor and firearms competitor."

"Though his views are quite different on the ban, Thomas can agree that people have been improperly informed what the sunset bill entailed. 'The national news media has chosen to listen only to the voices of alarm and fear raised by the same devious individuals who hoodwinked the public on this issue in 1994,' Thomas said in an e-mail." ...

"The Cold AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle is long, black and sleek and shoots .223-caliber ammunition, or 2-inch long bullets."

"For 10 years, the sale and manufacture of the fearsome weapon was illegal anywhere in America."

"Last week, as some Southern stores resumed sale of the rifle, Police Officer Darrell Corti demonstrated its destructive power."

"Corti aimed the weapon at a cinderblock at the NYPD firing range at Rodman's Neck in the Bronx and pulled the trigger. The burst of gunfire rang loudly in the ears despite protective gear. The narrow bullet traveled at such a high velocity that it pierced a half-dollar-sized hole in the inch-thick side of the stone before shattering into shiny fragments." ...

... "North Carolina Libertarians greeted the ban's end with approval and calls for similar 'sunset provisions' for all intrusive laws. Rather than leading to a wave of crime, the ban's demise will allow peaceful people to continue to defend their property and to pursue their interest in gun-collecting and shooting with less control by the Federal government. That can only be a good thing, Libertarians say." ...

"Thursday's columnist Swanee Hunt ('The safety of America's streets hinges on politics') makes a number of erroneous and/or misleading statements concerning firearms, which deserve an answer."

"She posits that the 1994 assault weapons ban is keeping AK-47s and Uzis off the streets. Not so. These are machine guns and have been, since 1934, covered under the National Firearms Act. Nothing about this law is scheduled to change."

"The 'assault weapons ban' to which Ms. Hunt refers covers semi-automatic rifles, which look like machine guns. While they are, as she claims, 'more powerful than (what) cops carry,' that is because they are rifles and 'most cops' carry pistols. In actuality, these rifles use a 'mid-powered' round that is less powerful than most deer rifles." ...

"I assume you have 'ceased fire' on attacking so-called 'assault' weapons -- the anti-gun editorial on Sept. 10 and cartoons on Sept. 14 and 16 -- and that I may now respond to your virulent, insulting, anti-gun commentary."

"The law that lapsed banned weapons based on 'cosmetic' features. Criminals, given that term for a reason, will obtain weapons notwithstanding laws or weapon appearance."

"Naturally, you do not question the ban's constitutionality. Second Amendment aside, its basis is the Constitution's 'commerce clause,' yet no one has proved these weapons affect interstate commerce. Liberals would never use the commerce clause to support federal censorship of the media, which would subvert the First Amendment." ...

"The House of Representatives will begin debate today on a very important piece of legislation — the 'D.C. Personal Protection Act.'"

"Already, as to be expected, the usual gun-control partisans are up in arms. They shouldn’t be. This common-sense legislation is simply a long-overdue attempt to conform the District’s draconian gun laws with federal law and the laws of the states."

"Year after year, Washington, D.C., is in the running for the disgraceful title of 'the murder capital of the United States.' Today in the District, it is difficult, if not impossible, for an honest citizen to keep a firearm in the home for self-defense. No handgun may be possessed unless it was registered by 1977, and legally owned rifles and shotguns must be kept unloaded and disassembled and thus useless to defend against criminal attack." ...

Critics of the measure say it will go even further, and let people walk around the nation's capital with fully loaded assault weapons."

"It's hunting season again and with it comes warnings of gun safety. Every day, 24 children* are victims of gunshot wounds. And while that statistics is startling, what's more amazing are kids who live after a bullet brings them close to death."

"On August 22, 2003, 7 year old Haley Torkelson and her 5 year old brother Trevor spent the day at Grandma's in Slayton, Minnesota. Also visiting were two teenage cousins, practicing with their rifles. When one of their guns got jammed, they dumped the bullets out and used a plunger to clear it. But one bullet was still in the chamber and the trigger was 'accidentally' pulled." ...
-------

* Note: This figure is arrived at by including as "children" anyone under 18. It also includes deliberate shootings, so a 17 year-old drug dealer who gets shot in a turf war would be one of those "children". The actual numbers, from 2001 - 2002 of real children (14 and under) accidentally shot is less than 3.2 per day. Still too many, but nowhere near "epidemic" proportions.

A DANGEROUS convicted kidnapper will not serve an extra day in jail despite hiding a loaded .22 revolver in his high-security prison cell.

Kevin Andrew Farrugia, 31, yesterday received an 18-month suspended sentence and a $1000 fine for his illegal prison stash, which also included cannabis, 11 vials of steroids, four syringes, a mobile phone, a file and a screwdriver.

The Melbourne Magistrates' Court heard Farrugia's hoard was discovered last May during a search of his cell.

Magistrate Jennifer Grubissa said though the crimes were serious she did not want to hinder Farrugia's chances of parole in November and possible rehabilitation.

"I don't wish to impact any potential for you to be paroled," she told him.

When any government, or any church, for that matter, undertakes to say to it's subjects, 'This you may not read, this you must not see, this you are forbidden to know,' the end result is tyranny and oppression, no matter how holy the motives. Mighty little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything. You cannot conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Revolt in 2100" (Pg. 68-69, Baen Books paperback edition, 1999 printing)
