Japan: 1.85 mil. people participate in disaster drills across nation

"Some 1.85 million people participated in intensive disaster drills held across the nation Sunday."

"One of the most extensive drills was held in the Tokai region where seismologists predict a huge earthquake will hit in the near future. In the worst case scenario, 8,100 people could die if a major earthquake struck the Tokai region..."

" 'We can only perfect our response to major disasters by repeatedly conducting drills. I'm sure we'll reap the benefit in the future,' [Tokyo Gov. Shintaro] Ishihara said after the end of the drill."

North Korea Correctly Identifies U.S. Hypocrisy On Arms Issues

"North Korea lashed out at the United States on Sunday over what it called Washington's hypocritical stance on weapons and said talks could only take place if the Bush administration dropped its hostility."

"U.S. Undersecretary of State John Bolton, in a trip to Seoul last week, branded the North as the world's foremost missile peddler, accusing Pyongyang of selling ballistic missile-related equipment, components, materials and technical expertise."

" 'U.S. hawks are charging the DPRK with deployment and proliferation of missiles,' the official agency [Korean Central News Agency] said. 'The brigandish charge means that they are free to develop, produce, deploy and proliferate any type of mass destruction weapons but other sovereign states' legitimate policy of increasing their self-defense capacity poses a threat to them.' "

SAME GAME, DIFFERENT PLAYING FIELD.

North Korean diplomats are merely pointing out the double standard now the norm in U.S. strategy -- foreign and domestic strategy -- when it comes to arms.

On the foreign scene, the U.S. behaves as if it can do whatever it pleases with arms but that it also gets to dictate what other nations must do.

On the domestic scene, U.S. law enforcement agents and employees/guards of government officials have relatively easy access to (and full use of) brand new machineguns, but The People are blocked from access to brand new machineguns -- a "law" enforced at the barrel of brand new, taxpayer-bought machineguns.

The North Koreans are simply stating a fact.

"A judge said he planned to complain to federal authorities about an air marshal who trained his gun on a passenger-filled jet cabin for 30 minutes after detaining a man."

"Two armed marshals detained the man on Delta Flight 442, which was flying from Atlanta to Philadelphia with 183 people on board, because he allegedly was rummaging through other people's luggage."

"One marshal then held his gun on the coach cabin passengers because some of them ignored orders to remain seated with their seat belts on, a spokesman for the Transportation Security Administration said Sunday."

" 'If people would have stayed in their seats and heeded those warnings, that would not have happened,' said TSA spokesman Robert Johnson in Washington. 'It's our opinion that it was done by the book.' "

"The bullet wounds may tell the story."

"They could be a key defense for Jerry Norris, whose trial starts this week in Arapahoe County District Court. Norris is accused of pointing a gun at two Aurora police officers who were mistakenly sent to his house on the night of July 26, 2001, because of a 911 computer glitch."

"Norris, 50, was shot twice and seriously wounded. Prosecutors charged him with felony menacing."

"But allegations that Norris threatened officers make no sense, said Robert A. Dill, one of Norris' lawyers."

"For one thing, there's Norris' background. 'It's not like they stumbled on a drug dealer here who's got a meth lab or something cooking away,' said Dill, who has historically defended officers. 'He has no criminal record. Zero. Nothing.' "

"The .38-caliber semiautomatic handgun that Norris had when the police arrived was empty, and he had no reason to point it at the officers, Dill said. Norris told his lawyers he was practicing sliding the magazine in and out of its grip in preparation for a firearms competition."

"Everyone agrees on one thing, though: The police were sent to the wrong house at 15444 E. Princeton Dr. because of a computer error. The actual 911 emergency was several miles away at another home."

"Blood tests showed Norris had no alcohol or drugs in his system. He's a Vietnam veteran who served two tours as a U.S. Coast Guard seaman in search and rescue operations. He also is a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association and was certified as an armed security officer in 1983."

This article, written by a hunter, is naturally very supportive of hunting -- well-written, overall. But it's introduction leaves a lot to be desired:

"Generally, when people read about couples bearing and shooting guns, their first reaction is to shake their heads in disgust."

"Five people, two of them children, were bound and threatened during a robbery at a south Charlotte [North Carolina] apartment Sunday afternoon."

"Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said two gunmen forced their way inside the home at the Andover Woods Apartments just before 3 p.m. During the attack, the children were forced into a closet, police said."

"In addition to the car, the robbers stole two guns, police said."

QUESTIONS:

Did these guns, stolen from under their noses, have trigger locks on them? Was ammo stored separately, in a locked container, as promoted by Handgun Control, Inc. and the rest of the victim disarmament crowd?

A firearm that's not available when you need it most is worthless when you need it most.

THE GUN SECTION:

"When she ran for president in 1999, [Elizabeth] Dole attacked the National Rifle Association as "a special interest group" and took positions the group opposed. One involved concealed weapons."

" 'Police work is hard enough already,' she said then. 'No one should make it harder. I think it's wrong to let people carry concealed weapons.' She also supported a ban on cop-killer bullets and bills banning assault-type weapons."

"Now she says sheriffs have convinced her that a state law allowing people to carry concealed weapons works. She acknowledges her support for the 7-year-old ban on assault-type weapons but has said 'there appears to have been little effect on crime prevention or punishment.' "

"Other candidates question her commitment to the 2nd Amendment's right to bear arms."

" 'When the chips are down, can North Carolina's many gun owners trust her to do the right thing?' [Jim] Parker asks on his Web page."

"[Jim] Snyder also casts himself as a strong gun supporter. 'I am absolutely in favor of handguns being owned by citizens,' he's said. 'Criminals in our society prey on those who are defenseless.' "

"UK Police were today investigating threatening and abusive messages directed at an anti-hunting group."

"The League Against Cruel Sports west country branch, based in Dulverton on Exmoor, said it had received a number of abusive and anonymous telephone calls containing much swearing and threats."

"It said the campaign was becoming nastier and more aggressive as a possible hunting ban loomed."

"Branch manager Paul Tillsley said:
"We have received a series of calls of a threatening and abusive nature. In the latest there was a lot of swearing and a man threatened to come up to the headquarters, shoot a deer and hang it on our door.

"The messages happen at regular intervals every time hunting is in the news and as we are hopefully moving towards a hunting ban, the number of calls is going up.

"But recently the calls are becoming more violent and more intimidating. The latest started with a hunting 'holler' and you could also hear hounds in the background.

"This is the sort of intimidation you get in this circle of people who shoot."
With that kind of anti-gunowner bigotry going on, it's no surprise this fellow and his kind are receiving threats.

"Officials are alleging Charlie Thomas dealt with firearms illegally"

"A 27-year-old Huntsville man was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday on 83 counts of federal gun trafficking stemming from the efforts of a local, state and federal gun violence reduction program and a still-ongoing investigation."

"Charlie Thomas was indicted following an investigation by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms into illegal weapons transactions."

"According to the indictment, Thomas bought about 135 firearms from a federally licensed firearms dealer - James Longshore, doing business as Jabal Inc. in Hazel Green - before selling and delivering the weapons to other purchasers throughout the state, said Alice H. Martin, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, and James M. Cavanaugh, special agent in charge of the regional ATF office in Nashville."

" 'The investigation and prosecution of firearms trafficking cases in North Alabama demonstrates this office's strong commitment to enforcing federal firearms laws and to protecting the public by ensuring that firearms do not come into the hands of people who are not legally authorized to purchase firearms,' said Martin. 'We will seek hard prison time for all gun trafficking crimes.' "

"If convicted, Thomas could face between five and 10 years for each count, and fines up to $250,000."

KABA NOTE:

83 counts at 10 years each would be 830 years.

This story doesn't say a word about whether or not any of these firearms were used in crimes, or whether even one of them ended up in the hands of a prohibited person.

"A spate of government litigation against the nation's gun companies has been stifled in 30 states, which have passed laws granting the industry immunity from civil lawsuits."

"A striking exception to the trend is the California State Legislature, which passed a bill this week repealing a law that gave the gun industry immunity."

"Gun control advocates hailed the repeal as a major defeat for the industry, but their victory may be short-lived. In Washington, there is a bill with 228 sponsors in the House of Representatives, that would provide federal immunity to the firearms industry. A similar bill in the Senate has 39 sponsors. No other industry has such blanket protection."

CONSIDER:

No other industry caters to a constitutionally protected right that comes under daily assault all across this nation. For example, far more people die in car accidents than by guns -- including the intentional criminal misuse of guns -- but people aren't trying to abolish automobiles or to sue car manufacturers into oblivion.

NDROQ, Albania -- "It was an offer that Drita Nuri and some of her fellow villagers couldn't refuse: Turn in their illegal weapons in exchange for a better water supply."

"And it worked, after a fashion. Villagers were still handing in guns, ammunition and explosives well after an Aug. 4 deadline expired. Their reward: amnesty, plus $50,000 worth of new pipes and pumps to improve the leaky water supply network."

"Although Albania's government has collected about 200,000 weapons and significant amounts of other ordnance, police say at least 200,000 other weapons and countless rounds of ammunition remain in private hands."

"Officials concede it hasn't been easy getting Albanians to part with all that firepower, even though it's against the law for most citizens to own anything more powerful than a hunting rifle, and even those must be officially registered."

"Enter the U.N. Development Program, which has hit on cash as a compelling carrot for disarmament."

"Since 2000, the UNDP has been running two programs in eight Albanian districts, doling out more than $3 million in aid in exchange for weapons. Project spokesman Gert Guri said the UNDP is working with the government to find other innovative ways of coaxing the citizenry to disarm."
