Does Kerry have a chance to wing some of the NRA vote?

Second Amendment traitor Robert Ricker: "The power of the gun lobby is more perception than reality." [the NRA's 4 million members] "many of these join only to get the gun magazines or insurance. They believe in the Second Amendment but understand that an AK-47 isn't a hunting rifle."

KABA Note: And many of us understand that the Second Amendment is NOT about hunting.

"But many Second Amendment fundamentalists, not so affectionately referred to as "gun nuts," are fed up with Bush. ..."

"Angel Shamaya, executive director of KeepAndBearArms.com, a proud member of the Anybody But Bush crowd is equally disenchanted. ..."

-------
KABA Note: Last time we checked Mr. Shamaya had no intention of voting for just ANYONE instead of Bush. But it's so nice to know that this particular "journalist" decided to copy erroneous claims from a previous story rather than check the claims himself.

"Four years ago this November, the eyes of the world focused on a single state -- Florida -- as the course of American history was decided by a mere handful of votes."

"Whether or not you think it was a good thing that George W. Bush eventually emerged victorious, there is no doubt that our country would be markedly different had Al Gore been in the White House on September 11, 2001."

"What a lot of people fail to realize, however, is even more profound. The fact of the matter is that were it not for the votes of gun owners, Florida wouldn't have mattered at all!"

"With the national assault weapons ban set to expire in less than two weeks, nobody expected the gun lobby to ignore the Republican National Convention. And it didn't."

"Its leading organization, the National Rifle Association, has sponsored several receptions this week. Wednesday night it co-sponsored a bash for House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who could either help or hinder efforts to extend the ban. The bash featured Isaac Hayes and Kid Rock and lasted into the wee hours."

"To remind Republicans gathered here to re-nominate President Bush of its national grass-roots clout, the NRA also took out a full-page advertisement in a national publication, opposite a widely read schedule of events and parties."

"A lethal moment in Bogalusa shocked the Klan into the realization that blacks were no longer chattel punching bags. During a 1965 summer desegregation demonstration, white hecklers turned violent and threw a brick which struck Hattie Mae Hill. The white mob surrounded the car the Deacons were using to attempt an evacuation of the terrified girl."

"As the mob threatened to break into the car, Deacon Henry Austin shouted that he had a gun. Then he fired a warning shot from his .38 into the air. The mob kept closing in. Austin then fired almost point blank into the chest of Alton Crowe who was in the front of the mob. While Crowe survived, the fun of beating up on blacks died that afternoon in Bogalusa."

"All the white liberals in the north and their black allies, with all their clucking that defensive violence would only provoke more violence, had failed to get the feds to enforce their civil rights laws. Henry Austin and the Deacons succeeded."

"But much more than a bias toward bad news and drama goes into the media's selective reporting on gun usage. Why, for instance, does the torrential coverage of public shooting sprees fail to acknowledge when such attacks are aborted by citizens with guns? ..."

"I conducted searches of the nation's three largest newspapers - USA Today, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times - for the year 2001 and found that only the Times carried even a single news story on defensive gun use. ...Broadening my search to the top ten newspapers in the country, I learned that the Los Angeles Times, Washington Post and Chicago Tribune each managed to report three such stories in a year."

"There is a doctoral dissertation waiting to be written on the role fear plays in determining how people vote and how political propagandists exploit those fears."

"The latest issue of Field & Stream contains an example of their tactics. A two-page ad sponsored by something called the Hunting and Shooting Sports Heritage Fund features a photograph of the gun nuts' rogues gallery: Democratic Sens. Charles Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, John Kerry and Ted Kennedy. The cutline beneath the photo says the four are shown leaving the Senate chambers on March 2, 2004, 'giggling after casting a day-long series of anti-gun votes.' "

"How the caption writer could tell they were giggling, ...isn't clear, so I guess we'll just have to take his or her word for it. But you should think twice before you take this outfit's word for anything, if what follows is a measure of its credibility."

Unlike that bastion of credibility VPC that would have you believe that unless we implement some "sensible" gun control, terrorists will be buying .50 BMG's by the bushel.

"Did anyone consider having these heavily armed officers just out of sight, on location but ready to respond? The way this crowd control has been planned is exactly the opposite. Automatic weapons are everywhere you look. The endless number of blazing red and blue lights and constantly wailing sirens add to the feeling that something has already happened. But nothing has happened – police officers are just moving from place to place. Are the sirens and lights being overused? Are they inadvertently driving potential rioters to the brink?"

"Apparently authorities think this show of power sends a strong message to possible troublemakers. But I have to wonder -- protesters I’ve seen are rude but unarmed. Rock and bottle throwers normally don’t bring along guns. If there was an isolated incident involving a firearm, the normal number of police officers could surely handle it as they usually do. If they have evidence of the possibility of guns, then they should move swiftly to arrest such persons preemptively." ...

"If somebody’s rights had to be taken, why did they take our rights and why did authorities assume we would just give them up?"

-------
Poster's Note: I hope it's not too late...

KABA Note: Strange that NYC believes a show of armed force will somehow keep felons at bay, but apparently only if the government has the guns. If the people have the guns, it's apparently a bad thing, and they need to be prosecuted.

"It seems that the folks who populate the staff there don't want you to read the Constitution beyond the First Amendment. When you get to the Second Amendment, it clearly states that 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.' "

"The people on The Free Lance-Star editorial staff propose just such an infringement when they advocate a ban on 'assault weapons.' The way this works is to demonize an inanimate piece of machinery that most citizens don't understand."

"The rifles in question work no differently from a mechanical perspective than any other semiautomatic rifle that any 'sportsman' uses."

"They do look different, but that's all. However, looks can be deceiving and that's exactly what The Free Lance-Star is doing--deceiving. The Constitution doesn't protect the rights of "hunters" and "target-shooters." It protects everyone--even people whom The Free Lance-Star doesn't understand and won't report accurately about."

"Those of us who own military-style rifles use them the same way anyone else does--lawfully. Many of us use them in high-power rifle competitions while The Free Lance-Star is busy covering upstanding athletes from the NFL, NBA, and Major League Baseball. You know: the guys who take drugs, fool around, and end up in court or jail."

"The simple fact is that we don't need any additional gun laws. ..."

"Your editorial plea to reauthorize the assault weapons ban was emotional but it was also full of misinformation. The 1994 law banned the manufacture or importation of specific weapons and high capacity magazines for public consumption. However, the ban did nothing to remove millions of assault weapons or high capacity magazines from everyday commerce. 'Pre-ban' guns and magazines are available and have been easily procured during the entire length of the ban. In fact, manufacturers dumped so many magazines and guns on the market in 1993 that prices actually went down in spite of the pending ban."

"That renders any so-called decrease in assault weapon crime or other statistics moot ..."

"Hahto also criticized the severity of Finland’s self defence law, which states that only “reasonable force” can be used."

"'You can see frequently that courts feel that defending yourself with a knife, for example, automatically exceeds the limits of self-defence – unless the attacker also has a weapon,' says Hahto."

"U.S. Ambassador John Danforth challenged the United Nations' failure to emphasize Sudan's involvement in the crisis. And he criticized U.N. officials for suggesting that fielding African Union observers would be conditional on whether or not Sudan was able to protect its people in Darfur." ...

A) What's going on is genocide not "abuses".

2) The victims don't need "monitors" they need guns and ammo to defend themselves - something that their government and the UN aren't capable of doing effectively. Current Sudanese law limits handgunners to 15 rounds per year!

The class is physical so women learn to escape an attack, but the main focus is actually to help them avoid attack in the first place. That could mean ending a date early if a guy seems aggressive, setting limits or just keeping up your guard.

The class is for women age 16 and older.

Confusion abounds in this editorial! One minute, he's a realist, the next, he's an idiot.

"In all advanced industrial democracies except the United States, guns are heavily regulated...Looking at democracy in comparative perspective, it is clear that an armed citizenry is not a necessary condition for political freedom."

KABA Note: If you call being prosecuted by the government for defending your life, the lives of your family members and your property "freedom," please, by all means, move.

"The United States is the only modern democracy in which gun ownership is a right, not a privilege granted by the state."

KABA Note: The United States is NOT a democracy.

"A sudden disappearance of firearms in America would not endanger liberty."

KABA Note: We'd simply become subjects, like in Merrie Olde England.

"But no right is absolute. Absolute freedom without any rules or responsibilities is anarchy. On the other hand, taking rules and regulations too far in the name of the public good can snuff out liberty."

KABA Note: The right to life is absolute. Consequently, the right to defend that life is absolute as well, even if it means using weapons that scare the hanky-wringers.

"Off-duty officers now have the option of leaving their guns at home when they're off duty. Previously, cops were exempt from the policy only when they were in church, on vacation or attending a sporting event."
